Monash Law First Year Lecturer Recommendations?

Hi everyone!

I'm extremely new here on the forum :S
I was just wondering if anyone has recommendations for lecturers for Semester 1 units??

As far as I know the lecturers are:

ILR - Hazel Litaba, Ross Hyams, Azadeh Dastyari, Peter Sallmann

CONTRACT A - Emmanuel Laryea, Rowena Cantley-Smith, Lisa Di Marco, Sirko Harder, Jennifer Paneth,

CONTRACT A tutes - Anne Day, Sally Andersen, Elena Karataeva, Karen Abidi, Nicholas Antonas, Vanessa Ritzinger, Ian Taylor

Cheers!!

I had Sirko, I thought he was a pretty good lecturer. Went through each case briefly which was useful.
Don't talk in lectures though, he'll stop and complain about people having 'parties' in his lectures haha..

I had Lisa Di Marco for tutes in Contract B, she was probably one of the best tutors I've had. Goes through everything in a very easy to understand manner, exactly what you need for first year.

Choose one of those, I'd probably choose Lisa first pref.

hyams' lectures are the only ones interesting to attend for ilr. for the love of god save yourself and don't choose a sallmann lecture, you'll know what i mean if any of your mates get him.

i also had sirko and thought he was pretty good. definitely very capable (was chief examiner at some point i think) and was easy to follow what he was saying. tends to overexplain things sometimes though which eats away into lecture time and only gave us 10 min breaks during lectures which was pretty draining haha.

dunno bout tutes, didn't really turn up to any :p

Hey Art Vandelay, remember me? :)
Just a quick question, my only option it to choose Paneth and also go with Dastyari! Was Paneth bad enough that I should stay longer at uni (choose different stream) just to avoid them?

oh hey!

she's not that bad - I get fed up with lecturers pretty easily. I guess lectures were just boring, and her voice was a little high pitched? She's a nice lady though.

if it means not having to stay back longer, then I would just go with her. I know so many people that regardless of their lecturer skipped Contract lectures just because it's a super dry subject, and it's a lot easier to just watch at home.

So the worst case scenario is she annoys you and you skip lectures to watch them online, which many will do even if they get a good lecturer  :P

Sirko Harder is exceptional, and he recently wrote a text book on contractual damages.

How's dastyari or litaba for ILR? Is there any disadvantage of having either of them as opposed to hyams for law1101/ILR?

Heard good things about dastyari. Idk about the other guy. Hyams just makes things interesting cos he's funny. Law1101 isn't too much of an issue because lectures are recorded (by hyams last year at least) . I think it's important to have a good contract tutor though, as that's the subject most first years will have some difficulty with.

Oh and one more thing.. do you guys normally have 3-day timetables or is it pretty rare? I'm trying to fit everything into 3 days but it's really difficult and frustrating so I might have to make it 4.. It's ok to just watch lectures at home right?

definitely get laryea if you can! he's brilliant - accent takes some getting used to but otherwise great guy and knows his stuff! and yes, pretty tough getting a 3 day timetable but you'll inevitably end up skipping some classes which will get you down to 2-3 days

Will I miss out on much by having dastyari as opposed to Hyams? With Dastyari I'll only need to go to uni on 3 days whereas with Hyams I'll have to rearrange my timetable and go 4 days.. Not sure what to do. Isn't Hyams like the chief examiner or something?

Btw slightly off topic but from experience do you think it's better to have 3 long (9-3) days of UNI or 4 days with only a few hours a day?

EDIT: Keeping in mind that I live across the werribee line; i.e. pretty far

I prefer the latter (even though it's pretty much useless for me as I'd be at uni every day regardless :/ ), because I find it progressively harder to concentrate the longer I'm at uni in a day.

In structuring timetables, I reckon it's useful to consider how easy it is for you to get to campus. If it's easy to get to uni, space out your hours - it'll make every day a lot more manageable (imo) - but if it takes you a long time to get to uni you may as well save on the transport costs and hassle by limiting the days you're at uni as much as you can.
