Hi guys, I'm Thushan and I will be giving headstart lectures for the above three subjects. I'm compiling the notes right now and I've got some ideas to try and make the lecture as interactive as possible. The ideas I have are here -
1 - In every topic I have a small problem (simple, but you will need to think) that I would like you guys to solve together in small groups, to try and use what you have just learnt. I would like to get a group to the front to present their solution to the lecture theatre as well.
2 - I would like to ask the audience questions, but in my experience (as a student and as a lecturer) I notice that the students are quite hesitant to answer the questions. To those who feel shy about embarrassing themselves, I want to say this:
I really want you guys to learn, I want you guys to get the most out of this lecture. And the best way to learn as much as you can is to interact, to ask questions, to answer my questions. Please, please don't be shy. I LOVE it when students have a go, I don't give a damn if they get it wrong, it's just an opportunity for me to teach them something new. You are allowed to make mistakes, you are supposed to make mistakes. If you are worried about what the other students might be thinking, please try not to worry. Many others may have the same question as you do, and I will stress this point during the lecture that it is OK to make a mistake and those who have a go should be commended for doing so!
Is there anything else in particular you would like me to do?
