Is EAL looked down upon for Monash MBBS?

Hi, I will be in year 12 next year and I am doing English as an Additional Language. I have heard several "rumours" that Monash prefers to choose Mainstream English students over EAL students :o. Any insights regarding this issue will be greatly appreciated.

No such truth.

The only difference is in the prereqs: "applicants must have a study score of at least 35 (out of a score of 50) in English as a Second/Additional Language (ESL/EAL) or 30 (out of a score of 50) in English"

But for someone aiming for 99.95 that hurdle won't be an issue ;)

No. I did EAL and I got in just fine. You just need to get above 35 in EAL.

subconsciously will the MBBS selection pannel not select someone who has done english over EAL provided same results, e.g. both have same atar, same UMAT, lets say same interview and everything else is same.
I dont do EAL, but i did hear that because medicine requires good communication they would rather normal english? possibly a myth but can be seen as legitimate?

That would be a super unlikely event, taking into account all of ATAR + SEAS, UMAT and Interview. If that were to happen I have no idea what would happen, but I don't think they'd discriminate based on EAL.

I know Monash does use GAT scores for some Middle-Bands (or at least they did a few years ago), maybe that would come into it? (I doubt it, but who knows).

I dont hear of many people going into MBBS with EAL, but then again im not doing medicine. Is there a lot in your cohort, if you know?

to be honest, i wouldn't be surprised if they did discriminate against EAL (not trying to sound like an idiot). Like, medicine being the course it is, needing proficient english skills etc, say getting 36 in EAL and then 50 raw in everything (maths/science) the pannel would surely have to look down on these people? im not too sure

But then again i guess the interview is what filters it out, e.g. verbal communication and all that. So if you do stutter a lot, poor english etc then i guess thens when they follow "protocols"

Getting a high English score means you can write well, not talk to others well. I don't think it's of use due to that fact.

For academic results, they only look at ATAR, not individual study scores. If you get 36 scaled in EAL vs 36 scaled in normal English, everything else being the same...then it doesn't matter. The only thing that might hurt you would be if you were quite non-fluent in English during the interview.

Nobody can say for sure, but Monash almost certainly do not care about the English/ESL/EAL distinction. It's a boilerplate requirement, not something they agonize over.
