Well crap I didn't even know this thread existed until today.. -raises hand-
I experiment with cloud virtual machines quite alot (in particular the provider DigitalOcean) - mainly involving CentOS and Ubuntu. At uni we use UNIX.
In response to the Windows 8 question, it's OK if you have 8.1 where you can set it to boot to desktop rather than having to jump through hoops from the Metro UI to the desktop. 8.1 is a step in the right direction but not quite there yet.
I've changed between 8.1 and 7 so many times because I really
LOVE 8.1's user interface, but love Windows 7's stability and of course, no Metro UI/other crap.
I too have looked through the Windows 10 Tech Preview and it's looking good so far. I've contributed a few bugs/glitches to the Microsoft team already (e.g. game graphics problems), but I think this is great since they're
finally listening to their users and getting rid of the shocking Metro UI.
True. I would use them (probably Xubuntu even though Lubuntu is lighter (right?)) but even then I don't have much space left (cheers Windows for having a 20GB install size) and I need Office for school :S
You know as an alternative you can use a cloud-based suite of office programs (such as Google Spreadsheets, Google Docs... - obviously there are many out there, but just suggesting this as an example).
.. Or alternatively you can buy an external hard drive and put windows on that, and make your system boot that on runtime, leaving you with free space to do whatever. Just some ideas.
