Entry into PhB

Hello, I'm in year 12 this year and I really want to get into PhB next year at ANU but I'm not sure if I can get an ATAR of 99, is it possible to get in with a lower ATAR? And is there anything else I could do apart from getting a high ATAR to improve my chances of getting in? I'm doing VCE enhancement history at Latrobe uni this year, could that improve my chances of getting in? Also is it possible to do two majors, one in arts and one in science in PhB?

Dumb question - what is PhB?
Bachelor of Philosophy, which at ANU is an extended research degree which is tailored towards your interests.

No you can't get in with an atar below 99 unless you have SEAS. Bonus points don't apply for courses with an atar above 98 so you'd need some sort of SEAS.
As for the two majors, you can do it if you do a double degree combining the phB and arts. Also you could use your electives to do an additional elective major (if there are enough points of electives available.

What is SEAS?
SEAS stands for Special Entry Access Scheme and you can apply for it when you're applying for university. It adds bonus points to your atar based on difficult circumstances such as location, disability, long term illness, under representation, etc.

Oh ok thanks. I think I might be able to get SEAS but I'll just try my best in VCE to get 99 :)

I'm fairly sure this isn't correct.   SEAS (I'm pretty sure?) only applies for universities in Victoria and as ANU is in the ACT it doesn't apply, and the entry into the PhB, having such a small cohort, isn't as rigid as the entry into your average course, especially since entry is based on a range of criteria.

I got a place into the PhB for science this year and I deferred until 2016 (so hopefully I'd see you there if you decide to go for it and get a place!), so I've found out quite a bit about the program.

From what I've heard and seen, the 99 pretty much guarantees you entry, regardless of the rest of your application (ie. extra-curriculars and other similar things).  These other things come into play when you get slightly below the score, so if you get a 98 or 97.  As you're sending in a personalised application and two teacher references, the selectors are going to see if you've been disadvantaged, and I would say that this is something that they would take into account, especially if you've got strong references and you can prove that you're passionate about science/arts.

As for the two majors - the PhB definitely can't be combined to make  a double degree.  This is something that I wanted to do too but unfortunately it's not possible.  You have to choose either science or asia-pacific studies and that's the area that you stick to for the majority of the degree, however you can do a certain amount of subjects outside of your main area - I've heard up to 6-8, however I'm not 100% about the exact number.  Personally I plan to take up my offer in PhB science and then decide at the end of 1st year if I really want to study arts as well, and if I do, I'll try to transfer into a languages/science or asia-pacific studies/science double degree.

I'd just like to say as well - I didn't think I'd get the atar to get into the PhB and nearly didn't end up applying because of it, but I'm glad I did as I ended up getting above 99.  All you can do is try your best in VCE and cross your fingers, and I hope it turns out well for you.   But it's also worth remembering that you can transfer into the PhB from other degrees if you do well enough in your first year.  There's always options!

UAC has an equivalent of SEAS that ANU recognises, http://www.uac.edu.au/eas/, but yes Victorian SEAS applications don't apply.

The PhB/Arts degree that was referred to might be the joint degree with NUS? These are a little different to what you'd normally call a double degree.

Oh yeah, I hadn't thought of the NUS joint degrees.  But as you said, they're not a traditional double degree, and you can't study two different areas in them.  It has to be the one area, either science or arts, just at both unis.

Yes it is definitely possibly to get into PhB without having a 99 ATAR. I know this for certain because I got in with an ATAR just below 99! I have just finished my 3rd year and will be starting Honours this year.

I know this doesn't answer your question but technically the PhB degree doesn't have Majors or Minors. You can do whatever subjects you want! The degree is based around research, so I guess you could say that PhB students have a major in research.

As for doing both Arts and Science at the same time. I know of a person who did first year in 2014 who couldn't make up his mind on whether he wanted to do Arts or Science, so he ended up doing both at the same time. If you want to go down this path, you will just have to talk to the PhB coordinator and they can sort you out.

Hi there. I'm starting PhB Arts this year and I also got an atar that was just below 99. Good luck. :)

Thank you everyone. So if I get below 99 will extra curricular things like sport and music help me get in? Is there any thing else I can do to improve my chance of getting in?

Note that ANU doesn't give bonus points to programs with ATAR cut-offs above 98, so you can't claim points such as for Grade 8 AMEB, or above 35 SS for various subjects.

It seems that they do consider Science/Asian Studies streams applications on a case-by-case basis (so there's still a chance if you get below 99), and if you look at the application form on their website, they ask if you have any special achievements (such as Olympiads/competitions) - so science-related extracurricular activities could potentially help.

Arts might be a bit different in its selection process since it only asks for basic information in the application - might be best to contact them if you're considering this stream.

How much lower than 99 can you go? I'm probably pushing for a 98, but I've got NYSF/3rd round Tuckwell (didn't make it :/) under my belt but I don't know if that will be enough...
