Myki struggles

What kind of Myki do we get now that we're university students? Can we still get a yearly one? I don't really like the idea of topping up every time I need to go somewhere :(

You can get a myki pass irrelevant of what type of myki you have. You can't buy the high school ones that are pre-filled with money for a year, but you can still load a years-worth of money onto a myki pass. To memory, the last months travel is free, too. To do this, simply go to a machine, go to top-up your myki as usual, then push "myki pass" instead of "myki money". A teller at a premium station can help with this.

The only issue you'll find is that unless you have a Health Care Card, you don't qualify for a concession myki (welp, unless you're a 16 year old uni student. :P), so you'll need to apply for a new VPT concession card. Your university will most likely have pre-filled out form available for you somewhere, in which case you just need to get that and hand into a premium station.

You can get the student Myki pass which is basically a card with your photo on it which you carry with your normal student Myki concession card. The application forms have been published for 2015 and you can get one from any Metro information desk.

The card expires every year on the 28th of Feb so if you get one for this year, it'll expire next year in Feb but the actual Myki card is usable for up to 4 years.

Just a question, does Melbourne Uni have pre-filled out forms as well?

You can't actually use that for Monash, hence the auto-filled form which has your details, photo, signatures, stamp, etc etc already on there ;)

You can't get the yearly at the super-discounted concession rate for secondary students - $450 a year or whatever it is. Instead, you just get 'standard' concession rates. That means that if you are a PT-reliant, expect your costs to go up substantially if you're going to uni every day.

And as others said above, do make sure you get the concession card itself (on top of your myki), and if you don't carry it with you it's considered fare-evading (just the same as not touching on). Technically this is also the case for secondary students, but they usually treat school uniform as proof of concession.

Yes.  It will become available in portal later.

Myki tips:

If my calculations are correct, the 28 day pass only works out cheaper if you know you are going to use public transport more than 4 days a week. Otherwise, Myki money is better and more flexible. (One week on 28 day pass = $16.17 vs 4 days on Myki money = $15.05).

If you use public transport Mon-Fri and not weekends, buy 33 days instead of 28 days and touch on on a Monday. This saves you from paying for the last weekend (2 days = $4.62 saved).

If buying passes, make sure you consider the dates of the midsemester break so you don't end up getting a pass during that period if you don't plan to go to uni.

You can set up auto-top up so that Myki automatically debits your card if you fall below a certain balance. No more waiting in line for a machine to top up ever again (the lines at Melb Central and Melb Uni tram stop aren't pretty in peak hours). Waiting to top up manually can often make you miss your train (if you're disorganised and not punctual like me :P).

Thank you!

Also, if you have health care card, do you still need the concession card for public transport?

No you do not need both. A healthcare card is an acceptable form of concession proof.
