study score pre-requisites

Hi guys,

I know there aren't that many of you's studying in NSW/ACT, but I just have a question:

For most universities here in VIC, they require a study score of 25 (or 20) in English before you can gain entry into a bachelor degree.
Is that required for admission into NSW/ACT too?
I've tried to look for answers but I couldn't find any, they only have ATAR cutoffs.

This lady from ANU came to our school and I asked her about English pre-req scores and she said that it doesn't matter what score you get, as long as you have 'passed' English - if so, this seems too good to be true :o

and also this might be a dumb question but does it matter which type of English you do? I know here in VIC it doesn't matter but in interstate unis they only have English and Literature, but not English Language.

sorry if this question appears stupid

thanks if anyone answers :)

thanks!

I'm pretty sure Victoria is the only state to make English compulsory in high school.

Edit: someone can confirm this.

Moderation addition: someone reported this post to say "I'm studying in NSW, and English is compulsory if you wish to receive an ATAR.", hope that helps

I don't know how they do it in Vic, but here in NSW your ATAR is calculated off of your best 10 units, and 2 of those must come from English. Therefore, in order to receive an ATAR you must pass at least 1 English course.

And as far as I know you only need to pass. However, since 2 of your units must come from English, you'd want to do well in your course if you're aiming for a high ATAR. Some universities may offer bonus points to students who excel in non-English areas and are disadvantaged by this. I think I've heard that the University of Newcastle does? I'm not 100% sure.

The courses they offer us are: English Life Skills, English Studies, ESL, English Standard and English Advanced (then there is Extension 1 and 2, but you do those on top of English Advanced.) You're eligible to get an ATAR if you pass Advanced or Standard (and with certain criteria ESL), but not any of the others.

As for study scores, I haven't even heard of them. ?????????

I hope this wasn't too convoluted or crazy. If you need me to clarify anything, ask away :)

I'm pretty sure Victoria is the only state to make English compulsory in high school.

The only state where English isn't compulsory is SA. All good universities will ask for at least a pass in English, though - particularly interstate ones, so a lot of SAians will still do English unless they plan to limit themselves to only SA universities.

As for study scores, I haven't even heard of them. ?????????

Yeah, it's a VCE term. Kind of like bands in that it represents the percentage of the cohort you sit in.

The UAC has a document outlining the subject equivalents for VCE and HSC and in a situation where an university is asking for a certain band score you can have a look at this to see what band your study scores matches to.

As you can see all of the English subjects (besides ESL) in VCE are equivalent to HSC English Advanced so you should be alright in the way of pre-requisites.

So yeah, obviously I'm gonna try and do my best in Eng but are you saying that you don't need to say, get a certain NSW HSC Band or something in English?

Like even if you meet the ATAR but your Eng score is low you'll still get in?
