Hobbies - what are yours and how did you get them?

Hey guys,

I just realized I literally have no real hobbies. All I do is think about schoolwork and education.
(there are many things I 'like' to do, but they're not serious hobbies or 'passions')

so yeah, just wondering what are your hobbies/passions/things you like to do? (preferably outside of school, even if it's something weird/quirky/nongeneric)
and how did you get interested in that hobby/those hobbies in the first place? :)

cheers

This is probably quite abnormal for someone my age, but I love LEGO. I guess I never really grew out of it, so I still build sets (much to the dismay of my wallet) and try some MOCing when I have time.

I've recently discovered a love for yoga. Much to my surprise, yoga is not as meditative as it looks. That stuff can be HARD!!!  ;D

i feel like all i talk about is school now, definitely in the same boat. it took me a while to think of hobbies/passions/things i like to do, because my mind is covered in school, even though i don't like to talk about it or do school-related things.

hobbies: photography. i begged my parents for a proper camera for a solid 2 years, and finally got one for christmas in 2015. i'm far from a professional, but i love taking photos, and have considered taking it to a career level, but i think i'll keep it as a side job. it's quite therapeutic, because you go out, and you take photos, then look through them and make a few edits. i can't photoshop/lightroom to save my life, because i don't have the patience for it but there's just something about taking a camera almost everywhere.

passions: history. for sure. i never realised how much history was a part of my life until i started in year 11, then regretted not changing subjects to pick up another history. i don't just like the class, i love how you can never stop learning about something that happened, and i've caught myself a countless amount of times procrastinating for so long, just looking at the most obscure events. i'm also passionate/interested in current issues, but i don't like talking about them because it always invites debate, and sometimes conflict comes with different opinions, which is super annoying. also, music has always been a huge part of my life, so there's that.

things i like to do: i don't watch a lot of tv, but i am an avid tv show watcher. i love to read as well, but haven't been doing so lately because first, i don't have the money to buy books, and second, if i read a book, i'll be sitting there for hours on end. back to tv though, if you read my journey journal, i've been watching suits, and i've watched a couple of other shows. i used to play sport regularly, but whoops exercise is too much for my daily life

i'll probably think of things after i've posted this, but that's it for now. interested to see what other people have written!

This stuck with me since year 7 and it is actually a pretty odd one, but I used to learn foreign languages while neglecting study for the fun of it. I got so crazy to the point where I decided to pick up Indonesian for VCE last year without any prior knowledge/education on the language itself. Languages shaped a lot of the knowledge I have of the world around me, as it gave me an intimate understanding of different cultures and values. 6 years. 12 languages (only fluent in about 5 of them), it is worthwhile I guess. I've stopped learning new ones because of year 12 (feels bad) but I try to refine my knowledge by reading a few articles/poems every now and then, just to keep up.

Exercise.
PE was compulsory until the end of Year 9, and as I had no extracurricular sports, I essentially did 0 exercise. I started to become even less healthy by eating copious amounts of fast food and chocolate, and adding way too much sugar into a cup of hot choc (my record was 9...).

Moving here was a fresh start in many ways. One of my closest friends recommended going to the gym, and I LOVED it. The feeling of endorphins and adrenaline, the sense of accomplishment that you get is unparalleled. I started going regularly, and also started to watch what I was eating, which then lead into my current passion/aspiration to become a dietician :)
Life is weird and crazy as heck but what can you do?

Thiiiiisss. It is so hard. I really want to be able to do astavakrasana one day! :P

@Strawberries

This used to be exactly me. School and studying were my main two interests, but it's really not healthy in the long-run. When thinking about what hobbies might interest you, I found it helpful to think about what I enjoyed as a child. Were you artsy? Sporty? When I was a child I was always drawing or crafting, and even now I enjoy journaling, and sketching.

Like Fantasticbeasts3, I also really enjoy photography and I got a 'real camera' earlier this year. I find photography really forces you to get out and experience things or places you might not have otherwise thought of.

Of course, I enjoy the standard things like reading, baking, listening to music, and watching Youtube videos. ;) I know people might think some of these things are a waste of time, but if you enjoy something it's definitely not a waste of time. So, if you enjoy watching TV, or movies, go ahead! :)

Some hobbies I have: Reading (especially spy fiction <3), playing bass, flailing at uke, talking long nature walks/exercising in general.
Passions I have: chemistry (that isn't organic *shudders*) , hate Melbourne's train system, cooking

I also love to watch the odd movie- Mean Girls (I currently have 2 beanies with quotes from that movie), the Blues Brothers, the Breakfast Club, the Police Academy series are just a few I love.

Hobbies: Music, I play the clarinet and am doing 4 pieces for the HSC (next week, ahh), and I can also play really basic saxophone and piano. I've kinda neglected playing my saxophone due to HSC. I started playing in year 3 in my school band, and the clarinet was the only instrument I could make a sound out of.
Reading, I haven't been able to do it too much lately but I've loved reading from a really young age. My favourite book series is probably Harry Potter but I also like the Mortal Instruments series. There was a time in year 4/5 (I think?), when my teacher told my parents that "I needed to stop reading and socialise more", as I would prefer to read at lunchtimes (was also pretty shy). My brother also loves reading which is really cool (I tried to read the illustrated Harry Potter book to him but we only got through the first couple of chapters).
Passions
Helping/teaching others. I like trying to answer people's questions on Atar Notes in a way they understand, and just trying to help others when they need it. I am working to become a leader (maybe next year), of a group of young girls at Girls Brigade (which is a christian girls youth group). I'm leading them tomorrow and we're just going to play games and eat food and stuff.
Cooking-I do hospitality at school so I know all the basic waitress stuff and how to make coffee/simple dishes, although I don't actually do a lot of cooking at home.
History-I love learning about the different time periods, personalities and societies of the past. I also like being able to learn about how history has been written over time. I really regret not picking up modern history as well as my two other history subjects (Ancient/Extension).

There are probably others, but I can't think about them at the moment.
Class of 2017 (Year 12): Advanced English, General Maths, Legal Studies, Music 1, Ancient History, History Extension, Hospitality

I've flipped through hobbies quite a bit - and it's not to say I've given up on them, because I always come back to them, it's more about what suits my lifestyle at the time. Reading is my top gig right now but I never did it leisurely during the HSC. I did do paint by numbers during the HSC, though! Very soothing - you hardly have to think and you create something beautiful.

Hobbies + Passions:
- Reading. Used to be a complete bookworm but don't have as much time now, currently focusing on one long but lovely book (Outlander, first published as Cross Stitch. They made an amazing tv show out of it, I guarantee you'll fall in love with the characters).
I was banned from the library in year 2 because I went there to read too much haha. I never forgave that teacher.
-Tv shows. I love watching tv shows but been finding it hard to find good quality ones and to have the time to watch. Currently I only really watch Game of Thrones but will be looking to find more as soon as I have the time!
-Maths :D. I'm currently part of the Mathematics & Statistics club at uni. I used to / still do like watching videos on maths (as long as it's interesting, like a lot of youtube videos can be. Numberphile is a great channel). Again, haven't had much time for it
- Baking/ cooking. I love having something tasty and sweet like a cupcake ready to eat when I'm hungry, and making my own delicious food. I also like to try new recipes to make an even better dessert :)
- Music. I don't make music but I love to listen to it, it makes even the most boring and/or hard tasks so much easier.
- Tutoring / solving problems. I currently tutor but also answer posts on AN (as I'm sure you know) to satisfy my cravings when I want to solve something

In year 12 I didn't do much but now I do a lot more and feel as though I enjoy it more (I think the freedom of uni has helped a bit, even with the higher workload).
Good luck with finding something! There are plenty of things you can do every so often that can be very fun and rewarding  ;D

Love painting/drawing/colouring/sketching/doodling anything like that..a piece of paper shouldn't be left blank. Photography and swimming as well.
I hate reading novels, even though I love English. Weird  :-\

wow, i'm the opposite! i hate english so much, but give me a book, and if it can capture my attention, i'll be there reading it for hours, even though i'm very fidgety and a naturally unfocused person.

Nah I shouldn't say I blatantly hate reading novels...it just has to get my attention within the first few pages, or it will never get read at all. I love real life spy/history novels....but thats about it... ::)
