With no internet connection, what can you do?

This also includes no mobile data plan. So I guess that renders the smartphone useless as well.

I kind of need your help. In less than a week's time, I will be going on a cruise to New Zealand. No guarantees that there will be a reliable internet connection (or any at all). Since I was around 10, there has been virtually no days where I have not been using a device that has the capability of connecting to the internet. In today's world, not only is it completely acceptable to say that you can't survive without an internet connection and a device, it's pretty impractical to live without one. So I have made this thread to ask you what I can do to when there's no internet connection both on the cruise itself, and in the future whenever I feel like I need to disconnect from the internet and find that there's nothing to do.

By the way, I'm not really into reading physical books (insert shocked face), nor do I have many books on hand. But I may be forced to do so, with the luxury of an internet connection being taken away from me.
Listens to K-Pop (Twice, Red Velvet, MAMAMOO) and Christmas music all year round.

Aside from physical books (I know whenever I go somewhere, I have at least one on hand yes), a couple of ideas include:
- Puzzle books (Sudoku, Crosswords, Wordsearches, you get the point) and colouring books
-If you feel up to reading but not physical books: Kindle App (on phone/computer). The app is free, and you can buy/download books (some classics are free on there) beforehand
-A board game, if you're going with family perhaps?

I usually write lists/poetry/things I want to achieve/reflections/journal entries/work-related stuff/study ambitions. I like the feeling of grabbing a coffee and sitting down just with a pen and notepad.

There might be things available to do on the cruise, though? Sounds pretty cool.

I like disconnecting from the internet, especially when camping & it'll probably be a bit jarring at first but there's a lot you can do without internet

For example:
- art of various forms (drawing, origami etc.)
- physically writing things (letters to friends & family (e.g. "open when"s), letters to self, reflections, stories)
- exercise (can look up specific ideas for this before you leave)
- engaging with people around you (talking, board games, card games)
- just sitting with your thoughts and thinking
- paying active attention to your environment (try engaging all senses)
- I have been known to handwrite practice questions to later post on AN ahaha

Hope you have a great time on your holiday!

The best part about the cruise is disconnecting for better connecting! There are so many fun things to do on board.

- Go see the movies and shows! There are always films been shown on deck or in the theatres so check out some of the stuff they've got on show. They also have performances which are free for you every night, ranging from cabaret to musicals to comedy skits to ventriloquists. This is perhaps my favourite part about the cruise because I hardly get the chance to see them when I'm home. They're heaps of fun!

- Head to the gym. I exercised at least for half an hour every day on the cruise, more than I ever did for the rest of the year. The view of the water is absolutely gorgeous and you can really enjoy yourself there.

- Bring board, card and/or portable video games. My friends brought their switch and we played Smash Bros with some of the guests we met on the cruise. I also brought some of my favourite card games to play with the people I went with which ended up being lots of fun and great for bonding. We killed time with so much ease! I'd highly recommend Werewolf One Night Ultimate, Exploding Kittens and Coup if you want some faster paced games and Ticket to Ride, Pandemic and Seven Wonders for longer ones  :)

- Compete/spectate! There's always trivia, bingo and even belly flopping competitions on. I went to trivia afternoon everyday and found it really fun and great for passing the time.

- Going to the bars! You don't have to drink if that's not your style but there's always nice live music and people to mingle with. I went with my friends; sometimes we drank, other times we just sat around with orange juices talking.

Every day on the cruise, they'll give you an updated agenda of activities available on board so there are plenty of things to do. If you head on a cruise with the mindset that you don't have internet and you won't be able to survive as a result, I personally feel like that's limiting you from actually enjoying the experience itself. I don't think it should be acceptable for anyone to say they can't live without internet (that's a huge exaggeration) and I hope you can embrace this trip as a space to realise and appreciate what other things there are to do beyond the internet  :)

Could you make your own offline playlist of music to rely on throughout the trip?

In any case, if you're going with family (I assume), does anyone else in your family enjoy board/card games? I've always loved them as a way to pass time.

I think this a really great opportunity, although it may seem different haha.

You can do so much without the internet.
Like others have said...
- puzzles are fun
- offline music or if you really want, the radio is great and the next song is always a surprise.
- if you have time also, you are in New Zealand and the place is beautiful, maybe go for a walk and take photos of the plants and things.
- you could bring DVDs or download things before you go
- also, maybe just like sit down and do nothing and meditate. That sounds really lame to some but lol, it's actually quite fun (:
- you could also just sleep for long hours if you really want ahah

Have fun (:

I'm in India right now with a dodgy internet connection, so here are some things I've been doing:

- Watching downloaded TV shows and movies (bless Netflix and downloads)
- Reading books, both self help and fiction.

And also, it's a good time to review the year. I find myself thinking about the year ahead and the mistakes I hope to rectify in university quite often when I'm bored, so that helps a lot. The self help books are really good as well, helps you to become a much better person.

There are a ton of things I want to get done with the internet, but I fond myself socialising much more often with those around me, which is quite good!

I know these ideas have already been done but here are a few specific games. I used to go on Cadet camps for seven days and also have the most inconsistent wifi in the world. These are my friends' and my personal favourite activities.

-Card games - oh my gosh, these are the best bonding activity and an absolute favourite. UNO is the best thing ever along with other games with a traditional deck such as Rummy, Black Jack and Tongue (it's quite weird but also hilarious) - here's how to play:
https://www.classicgamesandpuzzles.com/Tongue.html

- Board games - best ones imo are Cluedo, Rummikub is a new fave, Scrabble unites all ages and Game of Life.
- Art - doing basic art like drawing, calligraphy or painting (watercolour is great) alone or with others is always fun.
-Quick games like 20 questions where you think of a celebrity or an individual everyone in the group/ pair knows and they have to guess who they are in 20 yes/no questions.
-Group games if you make some friends such as Mafia, Ninja, Murder Winks etc. - these may sound childish but they're still great imo

-Download some music for offline listening
-Learn a new skill or something super random. You could print out some resources to learn morse code, learn how to spin a pen between your fingers or phrases in foreign language for example. I'm a big fan of learning raps to popular songs so you could always download some songs and print the lyrics haha (recommendations = Super Bass, American Boy, Macklemore songs, etc.   ;) :P)

-If all else fails, bring some HW. I always find motivation to do school work when I don't have to but find it hard to do it when I do have to. You may be so bored you'll do it haha and you'll be grateful you did later !

I hope this helps! Have fun
