Hey everyone!
We have been given the topic of "Euphemisms play a necessary role in maintaining social harmony. Discuss." as a prompt for essay practice. I have been having a bit of trouble coming up with arguments and examples as this is the first essay we have done (because of covid we never did any essays in unit 1 & 2, only short answer). So far I have:
- Euphemisms are necessary to avoid threatening both negative and positive face needs of an individual – maintain social harmony
- Euphemisms can be used to obfuscate topics that should not be taboo - can threaten social harmony by covering up important events (passive language use in news headlines)
I am not sure if I am going in the right direction with this so any help with new arguments or examples for the ones I already have would be greatly appreciated.
