I need help with understanding how to work this formula

Greetings.

With my Chem student experiment, I need to calculate the average, only this time I cannot get away with adding all the numbers together and then dividing by the amount of numbers.

So, I have to use this formula...only that I don't know how to
x ̅ =  (∑x)/n

Any assistance will be helpful, because all I know is that sigma (∑) means sum of. What does x mean? What does n stand for? Does x with a line on top make a difference?

Thanks in advance :)

The x with a line above it is short hand for average (you may also see it represented with the micro symbol which is the Greek letter mu). The formula is still asking you to add everything then divide the grand total by n which is the number of values you've got. Can you clarify on why you can't add everything and then divide by the number of values?
