Year 12 preparation

I’m wondering how important the summer holidays are for preparing for year 12?

Does anyone have any tips for time management or organisation pre-y12?

Should I aim to get a headstart on content, or just do the ‘holiday homework’ assigned?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated :)

(For reference my subjects of concern are English, Methods, Specialist and Chemistry)

Hi,

I did the same subjects as you this year. In terms of preparing for year 12 in school holidays, what i did was complete ahead a couple of chapters for both methods and spesh and then read all my english texts. I didn't touch chem, just did the holiday homework but it would be a good idea if you can do to at least the first and second chapter. The purpose of getting ahead is so that you have enough time to familiarise yourself with the content and have time to practice questions, so how much you want to get ahead in is determined by how soon you want to start your practice questions (although you can do this after each topic as well)

For time management a lot of people suggest using a schedule to block out your times for studying, but personally for me a timetable never worked haha, I always found it super rigid and was incentive to not study. Instead i used to-do lists, like I would prepare a to-do list the night before of all the tasks i would like to get done the next day and hopefully it was realistic. But getting at least one of the tasks done is better than nothing. Depends on personal preference a schedule might work much better for you than it did for me, try both methods and see which one is more effective for you and then stick to it haha.

Hope that helps a bit  :)

Hey SmartWorker,

That’s fantastic advice!

I agree, I think familiarising myself with early content will help take some of the pressure off… already I feel time-poor and I’m honestly trying not to freak out!😂

I also can relate to not being able to stick to a schedule, they seem to work so well for some people but not so much for me.
I think todo lists are a great idea, in the past they’ve helped me get through lapses in motivation.

thanks for all those great ideas!

Holidays can be a pretty important time to set yourself up for the year. You would have been given holiday homework, and while I didn't do any of those subjects, I'm sure it will keep you busy for the holiday. Make sure you use this time to really take the given material and do some revision as well.
If you have to read a text for english, take notes and maybe see what requirements you'll need for your first SAC. If you have worksheets to do in Chem, go through them at your own pace and take notes on any concepts or topics you didn't fully understand or could build yourself on.
