Hey guys,

If anyone is interested in working in medicine/at a hospital, what would you guys be doing for work experience? Kinda lost as to where I should apply as my careers counsellor told me hospitals aren't taking anyone in for work experience.

What you do for work experience probably isn't that helpful/useful as some high schools/peers may make it out to be. You could really do anything and still be fine for the future.

Hey Alomoac!
I’m not sure whether these places would still be doing work experience now with COVID restrictions still in play, but you can try the following similar places:
- labs
- unis (especially research sections and affiliated research institutes)
- any private optometrists, allied health services, etc.

Be prepared to be knocked back and told “we don’t do work experience here” a lot.

What you do for work experience probably isn't that helpful/useful as some high schools/peers may make it out to be. You could really do anything and still be fine for the future.
This exactly. No one really minds where you go do your work experience, though it can be vaguely helpful if you’re undecided in an area to decide whether it’s for you or not.

For an anecdote: I did my work experience in the marketing division of a small IT company. 10 years later, I now work full time in health care/ science fields.

I know many people who did their work experience in places/ fields completely different to where they ended up doing a career in.

I'm kinda undecided as to what I want do to for a career and I'm hoping work experience could help me make a descision.

Doing work experience in an area you *may* be interested in is a good idea to get a feel for what it's like. Definitely won't help much down the line for uni courses and such.

It will be very difficult to get work experience in hospitals in this climate. Might be worth contacting some local GPs if you could shadow there instead.

What other things are you interested in? There may be better options to cover more bases, since like others say hospital work experience is probably difficult to get right now.

I'm doing my work experience in the Peter Mac research department... Not sure if applications are still open, but I'm super excited!
