Is monash the only one with the common first year?

Because i want to put engineering from other unis as a backup but im not too sure exactly what stream i would want to do..as most other unis offer specific streams.

Engineering at UoM also has the common first year however it's not as good as Monash's one.
UoM get you to do only 2 engineering subjects over the year with the rest being maths, science and breadth.

Monash get you to do either 4 or 5 engineering subjects, plus relevant maths, science and a compulsory computing unit.

Hence Monash is better as you get to experience more engineering streams in greater detail. Each of those engineering subjects are specific to a type of engineering, however with UoM, those two subjects attempt to cover a lot of areas in engineering but not in as great as detail

what about RMIT?
"Don’t ever let somebody tell you you can’t do something, not even me.  Alright?  You got a dream, you gotta protect it.  People can’t do something themselves, they wanna tell you you can’t do it.  If you want something, go get it, period." - Chris Gardner

I think RMIT's electrical engineering is very good

RMIT don't offer the common first year, you just go straight into learning engineering.
They may have some better specific engineering courses but this topic is about the common year.

The best thing to do is list Monash first, then list engineering streams that are similar and what you would be interested in.

For example, mechanical and aerospace are similar thus you could transfer across one of those in case you didn't like one.

Ah ok thanks jimmy, would it also be possible to say transfer from RMIT engineering to monash?

It's definitely possible. Mid-year transfer are usually easier to get a transfer instead of an end of year application. If you don't get into Monash and get into RMIT instead, and really like it, then stay with RMIT. Otherwise if you don't like that particular stream, then it would be worth transferring so you can do the common year

Transfer is usually about 70% average. If you're serious about transferring, then you'll make sure to put the work in and get those grades

Sorry to butt in but whats the difference between doing the Master of engineering at UoM and a single engineering degree at Monash? Are both of them the same or is it an advantage to do one over the other?

Well biggest difference is that at Monash you can go straight to engineering (undergraduate) but for UoM you must do a general degree like Bachelor of Science the get the masters of engineering (post-graduate).

So is it fair to say that depthwise, the masters of engineering isnt as good?

Well, in B.Sci you do an engineering major, so it's not like you're starting from scratch when you start M.Eng. The depth works out to be exactly the same as the old B.Eng at UoM.
