Doing commerce without taking accounting

Hi guys,
I was just wondering if you can get into Commerce in an University without taking accounting at all in VCE.
I did Methods and am doing Further in year 12. Would that be enough?
And what kind of enter would Melb Uni and Monash look for in the commerce area?

Presumably universities have introductory lectures/tutorials or something, if you haven't done Accounting?

Accounting isn't a pre-requisite for Commerce at UoM or Monash. English and Mathematical Methods are really the only requirements. So, yes that's enough. As for the ENTER/ATAR scores, going off this year (2010), you needed 90.40 to get into Commerce at Monash and 94.80 for UoM. That's the clearly-in scores.

Monash has different accounting subjects tailored to those who DID do VCE accounting and those who didn't, so you should be fine

Nah there's no prereqs except an atar and a methods/english score > 30.

EDIT: I was talking about the atar required for a finance course. Or are the atar requirements the same?

Not any more. Everyone takes the same unit now: AFC1000.

Don't worry about no accounting background though... it's assumed you have no background knowledge, and accounting is taught from scratch.

AFC1000 is essentially 80% vce, 20% new stuff. Don't worry too much about it though... I don't think you'll be particularly disadvantaged. I noticed that the jaffies who did accounting in vce were way too cocky about it when they got to uni... a lot of them actually did quite badly because they didn't pay any attention. They don't really appreciate that a) vce accounting is not real life accounting and b) there's a looooong gap between finishing vce and starting uni... plenty of time to drink away all memory of debits and credits.

At UoM, the first accounting subject you do is called "Accounting Reports and Analysis".  I have heard from friends who did VCE accounting that that subject is basically a clone of VCE accounting.  So no need to worry there.

a teacher told me that a lot of those courses that do use accounting, you basically learn the VCE accting course at uni, but in 3 months.

The subject that I just mentioned, "ARA" as it is commonly called, teaches introductory accounting in 12 weeks.

Yes!!! definitely, I don't have ANY commerce knowledge, didn't do ANY commerce subjects in my life and now I'm doing commerce @ monash majoring in finance and actuarial studies. It's perfectly fine to not take commerce subjects during VCE and start commerce @ uni.

you'll see that in uni you'll be finishing the accounting vce course in like 5-6 weeks in one of the first year accounting subject, AFC1000.
