Hi,

I've been trying to get my head around a few questions, I hope someone can help me.

Q) Assume that:
All HIFS are PIFS
Some SIFS are RIFS
All ZIFS are SIFS
All PIFS are ZIFS

Which of the following do we know is correct?
A: All ZIFS are RIFS
B: Some HIFS are ZIFS
C: All RIFS are SIFS
D: All HIFS are RIFS
E: Some ZIFS are PIFS

@ Rohitipi TRUE TRUE I'll get back to you with the answer

Some SIFS = RIFs
HIFS = PIFS
ZIFS = SIFS
PIFS = ZIFS

therefore

HIF = PIFS = ZIFS = SIFS   ~~ RIFS

Therefore

~~ =__="

PS: I give up, F)Pick none of the above

About Philosophy

When I see a youth thus engaged,—the study appears to me to be in character, and becoming a man of liberal education, and him who neglects philosophy I regard as an inferior man, who will never aspire to anything great or noble. But if I see him continuing the study in later life, and not leaving off, I should like to beat him - Callicle

That would be right except:
B: Some HIFS are ZIFS

I don't think any of them are correct

I'm thinking of it like this:

All PIFS are ZIFS, therefore PIFS = ZIFS.

As all ZIFS are SIFS, ZIFS = SIFS and therefore PIFS = SIFS.

All HIFS are PIFS, therefore HIFS are a subset of PIFS, making all HIFS = PIFS = ZIFS = SIFS

Only some SIFS are RIFS, menaing that the biggest set is the RIFS.

Using this logic:
(HIFS = PIFS = ZIFS = SIFS) and some of those are RIFS

Therefore none are truly correct...

MHS/Mac.Rob verbal reasoning was much easier. Its just definitions of random words I failed at...

not sure i can make sense of it either, but here goes...

i don't get how it could be A. wouldn't that be faulty distribution?
to me it looks like you can say that
1. all ZIFS are SIFS,
   but
2. only some SIFS are RIFS,
   therefore
3. some SIFS are not RIFS,
   and consequently
4. some ZIFS are not RIFS

B could be correct,
1. all HIFS are PIFS
   and
2. all PIFS are ZIFS,
   therefore
3. some HIFS have to be ZIFS

but not C, because
if you substitute SIFS for men and RIFS for hairy people, you have
1. some men are hairy people,
   but it doesn't follow that
2. all hairy people are men.

D same thing as C.

E could be correct too because
1. all PIFS are ZIFS
   means that
2. some ZIFS are PIFS
as in "all stars are hot things,
   means that
some hot things are stars.

E. Some ZIFS are PIFS.

According to my (probably not) logically sound faux-venn diagram I drew up.

some animals (SIFS) are monotremes (RIFS)
all mammals (ZIFS) are animals (SIFS)
all cows (PIFS) are mammals (ZIFS)

if you follow that diagram, which indicates that some HIFS, PIFS and ZIFS are RIFS, wouldn't that mean that some cows are monotremes?  you could maybe fix that by having the RIFS circle only intersecting the SIFS one.
      I'm confused by this question. Some of the answers here use the PIFS=ZIFS sort of thing, which looks like mathematical reasoning, equivalence.
But it says it's from a verbal reasoning quiz, so it's not two-way equivalence. all cows are mammals does not mean that all mammals are cows in the way that all natural numbers with exatly two divisors are primes means that all primes are natural numbers with exactly two divisors (does that example work? i'm hopeless with maths)
