Automotive Engineering?

Hey guys,

I'm currently completing year 12 this year and decided it was time to start narrowing down my course preferences for uni. I definitely want to get into engineering, specifically in the automotive industry, but im not quite sure which course is best suited for it.

Is aerospace or mechatronics engineering more suited for the automotive industry? Im also aware that aerospace is much harder to get into, but i am surely up for the challenge !

Any advice is greatly appreciated,
thanks :)

I think Aerospace or Mechanical are the two best ways into the Automotive Industry

Mechatronics can also lead to a job in the Auto Industry, but moreso to do with technology within cars :)
vce: english, methods, spesh, chemistry, physics, geography.

ground- mechanical, air - aerospace.

Obviously, air > ground. Might be a little biased here :)

haha thanks for the advice, even if it was a bit biased ;)
But honestly i'm keen on aiming for aerospace, except i'm not interested in planes at all, im more of a car guy. Sounds silly i know, but i heard that a degree in aerospace gives you a better chance with job opportunities in the automotive industry over just a mechanical degree. Is this true?

For Aerospace at Monash you graduate as an accredited mechanical engineer AS WELL AS an aeronautical engineer. And yeah for things like aerodynamics there would be some advantage. I'm not sure how much more likely you are to be chosen over a graduate from a mechanical course, but the automotive industry is definitely one of the major career paths for aerospace graduates.

Just one more question, i see you guys are currently studying aerospace. With the course itself, is it much to do with planes as such? Like for example is the aerodynamics section focused on planes or in general? Just don't want to get into something that im not going to happy with lol :S

It only specializes in planes in years 3 and 4 where, yes, it becomes highly specialized in planes, plane components and plane dynamics. Years 1 and 2 are all Physics, Mathematics and General Engineering theory

Automotive engineering is more or less a subset of mechanical...at least thats what they told me at melbourne.

If you're sure you want to do automotive engineering why bother with all that aerospace stuff, sure it looks more fancy and all but it's not really what you want to do. Go for mechanical i reckon, most uni's AFAIK have a common first year anyway. So, you have at least a year to decide.

Go for mechanical since you're interested in cars.

Yeah i think i've come to realise that i shouldn't bother with aerospace. Do you think another approach to increasing chances of employment would be doing a double degree? I've heard that doing a double degree with commerce is the way to go. Just wanted to know if there was a major difference in the work load, and why commerce?

Oh and another thing, does monash even have a mechanical engineering degree anymore? or is it just mechatronics thats available now?

I'm not sure bout you could do a general engineering degree and choose mechanical after first year.
