Pronunciation confusion...

Just listening to a news report on the radio, and the 'news-person' kept saying the word "issue" in a way I had never heard before...

Is it pronounced 'iss-you' or 'ish-oo'. I've always said 'ish-oo' and have never heard otherwise. It probably doesn't matter, but I'm just curious, thanks :)

According to my dictionary: issue (say ish-oo or iss-yoo). I've never heard anyone pronounce the word 'issue' as 'iss-yoo'.

I say "ishoo" like any normal person.

What about the word appreciation?
"Appre-si-a-shun" or Appre-she-a-shun"?

I say the latter.

A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice Chianti.

never heard of pronounced the second way before (issue)

i say and usually hear 'appreciate' with an 'sh' sound. i think s or c sounds a bit funny

there should be a pronunciation thread, i've got a list of words i'm not sure how to pronounce

Both are correct in Australian English. A lot of newspeople say is-syoo.

I read it as 'goll-jee", cos there's no u after the g (ie gogli not golgui) so it's probably a soft "j" as opposed to hard "gu" sound. But hey, who knows...

How do you pronounce 'renaissance'? I've heard 'ren-nay-sance' and 'ren-nor-sons'.  My dictionary only gives one way of pronouncing it

Well what about occipital??

My teacher would say it as oh-sipital, while I heard Gordo from Lizzie Mcguire pronounce it as okksipital.

I don't know why that shocked me.

If you wanna be French, it's more like "reh-neh-sawnce" where the first "reh" rhymes more with "fur" (long, drawn out sound) than 'ren' (shorter sound). Maybe it's more "ruh-neh-sawnce". The "neh" is like a softened "nay". Stress is on the first and third syllables, kind of more on the third.
