Hey!
Im curious to know why the ANU website states that the B Asian Studies/ B Laws has a 'heavy workload'. It is the only double degree which has this warning. So Im wondering if it really, really hard or something?
Because either way I would love to do it, but I just wanna know what Im getting myself into!!

THANKS!!! :)

I have a friend who does Asian Studies. I don't think that it's a heavy workload in itself for first year, but it is a requirement that you do a language (I'm pretty sure) which is probably heavier than most courses, especially given that Asian languages are often much harder for English speakers to pick up than European languages, for instance. Law has a lot of reading involved and many law students seem to freak out a lot about exams and assignments and so on, but the contact hours are reasonable. I guess if you go in knowing that it's a "heavy course" and deal with the content in an organised way, you shouldn't really have a problem. I think the program would be a similar load to Arts/Law if you were doing a language.

To be honest, if you got 50 in legal studies, and if you're good at learning languages, then you should be alright. But it's definitely one of the more challenging double degrees. That being said, several of my friends are doing that exact combination, and they're all loving it.

Im also wondering when they (ANU website) say Modern Chinese 6 (I want to major in chinese) is that relating to the level of proficiency which you reach in that language? Is level 6 high?

Compared to what you have encountered before, there is a LOT of reading for law.

Yes, but you don't have to start with that level of proficiency - that's what you have to end up at (at least) in order to graduate. That is, there are 8 direct modern chinese courses. Beginners start in the subject Modern Chinese 1 in first semester first year, then next semester take Modern Chinese 2, and so on. If you're more advanced, you might start at Modern Chinese 3 in your first year. I've a friend who was so advanced in chinese that he started in Modern Chinese 6...
