11:30 A.M. - Server move initiated.
11:35 - Attempt to contact www.dot5hosting.com
12:10 - Give up on dot5hosting.com's "live" chat

I was waiting in a queue of 2 people for a quoted wait time of 2 minutes, and ended up waiting THIRTY-FIVE FUCKING MINUTES AND NOTHING HAPPENED. THE STUPID BASTARDS. WORSE THAN FUCKING TELSTRA.

12:12 - Call INTERNATIONALLY to the help line in the US.
12:35 - FINALLY speak to an operator

AND OH MY GOD JUST AS THE OPERATOR PICKED UP IT BECAME MY TURN IN THE LIVE CHAT! )*#%*#)*#)**^)#*)#^*^#*)^**)q#*)#*)^)*)*#^* I FUCKING HATE YOU DOT5HOSTING.COM I WASTED $25 OF CREDIT ON YOU FOR NOTHING. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH YOU PEOPLE!?

12:38 - dot5hosting.com releases its nameserver grip on www.freestudynotes.com
12:55 - www.lotdhosting.com gains possession of the DNS stuff
12:55 - Optus still hasn't recognised that the server has moved. Bastards.
1:00 - Log into cpanel of dot5hosting.com to backup whole site.

Who wants to imagine my surprise when it says "36 mb file size" downloading at a princely... 5 kilobytes/second. Were they SERIOUS? What on earth kind of moron business were they running? It was going to take TWO HOURS for the backup to download. Thank GOD it went faster after about 10 minutes, because I was about to call the international line again and abuse the shit out of the first person I spoke to. DOT5HOSTING.COM SUCKS. NEVER USE DOT5HOSTING.COM

1:15 - Back up DB. Takes 10 minutes. Fucking dot5hosting.com. It was 2 MB over TEN minutes. I have a 1.5 Mbps connection. FUCK YOU.
1:25 - Initiate move to lotdhosting.com - and, here's where it gets *interesting*.
1:30 - Unzip all files into new VCEforum folder on new server.
1:35 - Start transferring DB over. ERROR: #1064 - You have an error in your SQL syntax; check the manual that corresponds to your MySQL server version for the right syntax to use near './' at line 1

FUCKING DOT5HOSTING.COM. I was moving the site with my friend who owns www.lotdhosting.com

Apparently, dot5hosting.com is SO ARCHAIC that its MySQL was not compatible with the new server's version of MySQL. FUCKING DOT5HOSTING.COM WHO STILL USES MYSQL 3?!?!?!!? WE'RE ON 5 ALREADY. FUCK YOU.

1:50 - Because my friend is awesome, he uploaded the DB for me. 2:05, check the DB to see everything is going dandy. Bad news guys. HE UPLOADED OVER THE WRONG DATABASE AND WE LOST EVERYTHING THAT WE'D BEEN WORKING ON FOR THE NEW SITE. I freaked out so much. OMG OMG OMG WE'RE DEAD WE'RE DEAD. THAT'S ALL OUR WORK DOWN THE DRAIN.
2:05 - after 15 minutes of panicking and freaking out, my OTHER webhosting friend who owns the cluster that my other friend is a reseller of signs in.
2:10 - He informs me that MySQL backups are made of each website every 4 hours.

THANK GOD. I hadn't edited the new DB in over 8 hours so they found one and uploaded it for me. He took his time but OMG the RELIEF when it happened!

2:30 - Everything is fine. Optus still doesn't recognise that the DNS shit has changed. Still points to dot5hosting.com. Fucking Optus.
6:30 - Stayed up for FOUR HOURS to ensure that the DNS move went okay. It did. But the forum isn't working. Everything else is fine though so i go to sleep with the intention of getting Daniel to fix everything in the morning.
2:00 (P.M.) - Sure enough, Daniel spends about 20 minutes analysing the situation and comes up with the solution that we were connecting to the wrong localhost. With - no shit - 20 keystrokes, fixes the entire thing. :D <3 Daniel.

And that, ladies and gentlemen, was our server move. It cost me $25, about 8 hours of my life and 3 years off my life expectancy, but we did it. Enjoy!

Well done.

And here we were on IRC, still thinking the notice was trying to take the piss out of us.
"LOLOLOL Maintenance Mode suck shitzu LOLOLOL!!1!!"

I suppose the only benefit of moving servers was that you got rid of a crap host?

Reveal thy hidden benefits, and I shall donate positive karma.

A response that dodges the question but is reasonably amusing will also get positive karma.

... Karma is irrelevant to me.

Suffice to say, it will make things go a lot more smoothly when the full site goes live. :) I can't say much more than that.

Also, lotdhosting is a much more powerful server. It's a cluster of servers as opposed to the shared server we had before. It's also more reliable, and because I'm friends with the person who runs it, tech support is a breeeeeeze. :D

Some people (including me) are still reading the old IP. Urgh, flushing the DNS this many times can't be healthy. Goose, car.mel and I are experiencing these problems. (lol, what a concidence, all from ghey telstra smallpond)

His Windows PC would access the site, but his Mac would still access the old server. I guess it was a DNS caching issue.

Oh, he said 'login' not 'visit'. So I figured his web browser or something prevented him from logging in on a Mac.
