University options for a career in IT (Melbourne). HELP??

Hi everyone,

This is my first post on VN :D!

Just wondering if everyone could post their opinion on which university in the Melbourne area would be best for a course in IT.
I'm not quite sure what I exactly want to do yet... but not the multimedia or design aspect, more of the networking/programming side..

Just looking to distinguish the good from the bad.

Thanks for your help,

Captainoats.  ;)

Your best bet will be Monash, Swinburne or RMIT. Seeing as you seem to be a little unsure of exactly what specialisation you'd like to take, I would recommend the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems at Monash, as it allows you change your major if you change your mind. There's also an Industry Based Learning placement available if you would like that opportunity (this option may be available for the generalist course at Swinburne, but last I checked it was only available for their business-focused BIT program).

Sweet, thanks so much!
I'll check out the extra details regarding the Bachelor of Information Technology and Systems at Monash.
I was getting a bit worried about my course options, and with it being holidays, I can't get an appointment with my careers counsellor.
Thanks for your reply :).

No problems, feel free to bug me anytime (via PM) if you got any more questions.

It's great seeing more females taking up IT as a career choice - the gender imbalance in industry has been (and is) a problem that has had copious amounts of money thrown at it.

(you'll find that girls get preferential treatment when it comes to jobs and possibly university entry and scholarships)

haha, that's cool. And, we got the same SS for our first subject.

VN soulmates  :smitten:

But, I could only dream of a ss of 42 in methods, lol. I'm thinking that will be my lowest scoring subject (and the one that won't count to my ENTER)

42 scaled ~ 37 raw :P

I decided not to do any sciences, simply because I didn't need to...

Oh crumbs.
Maybe I should've just stuck with Software Engineering and not change my major to Chemical Engineering (but programming sucks x100000000000000000000 and Programming subjects Informatics 1 and 2 were an EPIC FAIL for me :( )

Good to see people choosing IT as their career (female or not). I didn't do any sciences as well, at least at unit 3/4 level.

squance, it's probably better you switched to chemical, programming is an integral part of software engineering :P

Garrr. All the IT courses i don't really want to do.. lol. Guess i'll just pay like everyone else haha.

And, "Students must have achieved an ENTER score or equivalent between 90.00 and 97.00."

So, if I score 98 for example, i can't qualify for that scholarship.  ???

Yeah, you'd get the scholarship that makes you HECS-exempt :P
