ThunderDragon's Journey to Med

Hello everyone. Some of you may recognise me from my VCE Journal haha. I decided to start a University journal just to look back on this in the future and also give some insight into Uni for high school students.

What course am I studying?

I am starting my first year of a Bachelor of Science at Monash University this year.

Why am I studying a Bachelor of Science?

Mainly for the pathway of getting into either Non - Standard Entry Undergraduate Medicine or Postgraduate Medicine somewhere in Australia.

What subject's will I be doing?

First Year Semester 1:
•   BIO1011 – Blueprints for Life – Physiology and Developmental Biology Major
•   CHM1011 – Chemistry 1
•   ASP1010 – Earth to Cosmos Introductory astronomy (Changed to EAE1011 - Earth, Atmosphere and Environments)
•   PHS1031 – Physics for the living world

First Year Semester 2:
•   BIO1022 – Life on Earth – Physiology and Developmental Biology Major
•   CHM1022 – Chemistry 2
•   SCI1020 – Introduction to Statistical Reasoning
•   ASP1022 – Life in the universe astrobiology (Or If I liked EAE1011, then might continue with EAE1022)

What are your goals for the future?

My goals for the future are to hopefully get into an Undergraduate Medicine program as a Non - Standard entrant at UNSW or the University of Newcastle or to get into Postgraduate Medicine at either Monash, Melbourne, Deakin or USyd. If that fails, I plan on either studying a Doctor of Optometry or Physiotherapy at Melbourne or Teaching (Secondary Ed) at Monash.

Hey!

I haven't done any astro units but they sound really interesting.

Is PHS1031 a physics or physiology unit? or something else?

Yeah astro seems pretty cool to me and something I've never really done at school before. PHS1031 is physics for the living world so I guess kind of a halfway point between physics and physiology :)

Hey ThunderDragon!
Congrats on your offer!!

Wow, the astro units sound super cool, particularly the astrobiology one!! I'm literally obsessed with the possibility of life on other planets.

I'm thinking of trying for med through the non-standard pathway too - what made you choose UoN specifically?
I'm excited to follow along on your uni journey and your pathway to med school!

Haha thanks Evolio! Congrats on your offer too. I guess for me UoN has a pretty good program and I like the vibe of the university overall although my first preference is UNSW however unfortunately my Atar doesn't meet the minimum requirement for UNSW so I'm unable to apply for that course.

Feel like I'm echoing everybody else in this thread, but all the astro stuff sounds amazingly, immensely, different-level cool! The chemistry too; I have a friend at UMelb who's really enjoying her chemistry so I reckon it's quite fascinating at university level.

All the best this year and for your future goals!

Haha yeah im excited for the astro stuff! I hope chemistry is way better than VCE Chem because I both enjoyed and hated VCE Chem  :( . Hopefully I'll get the opportunity to see you on campus next year haha!

Haha thanks. For me, either Biophysics or Life in the Universe sounds the most interesting to me despite my hate for Physics in high school hahaha.

Before Orientation Update

I should do a little update. Our timetables finally come out and I'm overall decently happy with my timetable and got most of my first preferences. I originally planned on having Tuesday off but now I'm getting Thursdays off every week and Wednesdays off every fortnight (although I will still be going to Uni every Wednesday for Volleyball probably). My units are the same (thankfully) as I thought there would be a clash between my Biophysics unit and Astronomy unit but it alternates every fortnightly so I'm pretty lucky.

Orientation Week is coming up pretty soon and I'm pretty excited. Only going for 1 day just to do a Campus tour, sign up for a bunch of clubs and also buy my lab coat and lab book. Overall excited for Uni but also nervous since Science is so big and there's over 1200 students in the cohort.

In terms of non-Uni stuff, my SAT study is going alright (not fun tho I really do not like this exam, thank you UNSW) and I've put UCAT off tho I want to focus on my SAT for now since its only 3 weeks away. Have a whole bunch of Psychology tutoring trial students to get through this week but already have a few students so I'm pretty happy and hopefully a few more students will continue.

Hey ThunderDragon!🥰

Glad to hear that you got most of your first preferences for your timetable ;D. Nothing is better than having a full free day!
(although I will still be going to Uni every Wednesday for Volleyball probably)
Volleyball sounds really good! How long have you been playing volleyball for?
Orientation will definitely be a lot of fun and there probably will be a lot of things you can do on the day. Do you have an idea of what clubs you want to join?
I'm also glad to hear that you have some new students for Psych tutoring! That is exciting and I'm positive you will get a few more students ;D

Thank you so much for the journal update ThunderDragon and good luck for uni! I'm looking forward to seeing more updates in the future 8)

Hey Ash

Haha yeah having a full free day is pretty good. Hoping to volunteer on that day after I finish my SAT. I played volleyball in Year 11 and then quit to focus on Year 12 but recently I have been playing it a little bit with my friends but hoping to actually get back in Volleyball now that I've got a little more free time.

I'm thinking of joining Monash Science Society (obviously lol), Neuroscience club, Vietnamese Student Association (I'm not Viet btw), Korean Student Association and Volleyball. If they have Lawn Bowls, I might join that too.

Hey Thunderdragon,
I see some ambitious goals that would require lots of hard work and time commitment (tryharding over the three years). Good Luck!
