Hey Emily!
(may be a little belated, but congrats on your results :D)
Here's some questions!
1. I was just wondering on the crucial aspects needed to state rank business studies, as that is one of my ultimate goals.
2. Is it possible to state rank with only 1 case study?
3. What was the hardest topic, and why?
4. Any other small tips and tricks you think many kids don't know about?
Thanks!

How are you finding your law degree at UNSW? Do you think a law degree is worth it if you are not planning to pursue a law profession? (i.e. do you know if it would be useful for DFAT?) :)

How exactly did you study for business? I struggle for motivation and get easily distracted

Hey Grace!

First of all welcome to the forums! Business Studies is often known as one of the 'driest' subjects in the HSC so many people just call it a 'bludge' and therefore lose all motivation. However, business is definitely one of the HEAVIEST content subjects there is as it is only made up of core subjects.

Personally, when I studies for Business Studies I always had my study notes done weeks in advance, giving me more than enough time to study for the exams. I also made summary sheets closer to the exam, with just some key points that I might not remember as easily as others and a summary for all my case studies. This allowed me to quickly look at them before going into the exam. However, I also did take the path of route learning and just did what I had to learn the content. I did this by writing out summary points of all my notes and as silly as it sounds, I talked to myself aloud.

As you are struggling for motivation, I think its best to find out what learning style works best for you. Whether that be visual, kinaesthetic, auditory, etc. Also try and research businesses that you personally like for your case studies. Hopefully that will minimise the feeling of 'oh I have to do it'.

Hope this helps!!

And

Hi KingTings!

Thank you so much!

1. I think there are a combination of lots of things needed to really excel in Business Studies. The first would be knowing your syllabus inside out. This will allow you to never get tricked by a HSC examiner since you know every single syllabus dot point you can get tested on. Secondly, extensively knowing the content will always allow you to have more than enough information to answer any question with different mark allocations. This could also include you going outside your textbook and doing that as your own independent research. Thirdly, knowing your case studies really well. Yes, it is good that you can recall what the case study is about but its all about your ability to apply the case study to the content and how it affects the business' operations. You need to make a 'judgement based on a criteria' to satisfy the B6 marking criteria and this will be evident if you use statistics to support your claims in your essay.

2. I think anything is possible! It's not really about how many case studies you have but rather how well you know it and if you can apply it to any business situation. Yes, it is possible to do it with one but my advice and what satisfies the B6 marking criteria is to at least have 2.

3. Hardest topic for me personally was human resources. Only because I just thought it was so dry and just so much content to learn about. Like talk about that extra effectiveness section at the end!

4. Knowing the smaller syllabus dot points for each topic. Those one's kids really overlook but lately the HSC has been testing them quite frequently. For example, the 'implantation, monitoring and controlling' dot point in marketing is one that students really brush over but the HSC has tested it 2 years in a row. So know your syllabus!

All the best for this year :)

Hi Lexie!!

Hope you are having a great started to Year 11, it was definitely one of my favourite years! I think to remember key terms making flashcards or using mind maps that are really colourful helps with memory retention. This was definitely one of my fav strategies to study with.

In terms of study, I don't think its the amount of time you spend studying but rather the quality of study and how effective you make your time when you are studying. However, if you do want a numerical number I approximately spent 3-4 hours everyday after school studying.

All the best!!

Hi Emily,
How are you finding your law degree at UNSW? Do you think a law degree is worth it if you are not planning to pursue a law profession? (i.e. do you know if it would be useful for DFAT?) :)

Hi Finn!

Ahh the law degree at UNSW is definitely something else. I think I am still getting use to the transition from high school to university so I am finding it a bit tough. At times it is quite boring since we are just covering legal history at the moment and there is obviously a lot of reading! However, I am really starting to enjoy the content as well as making new friends such a social environment.

I think a law degree is definitely worth it if you want to develop critical analysis and understand skills. At UNSW you can't do a law degree on its own so you always combine it with another degree. This allows you to either go down the law pathway or the other pathway, which for me is commerce. But yes, definitely worth it. Australia's own Rebel Wilson obtained a law degree at UNSW and look what she is doing now!

As for DFAT, there is an international studies and a politics degree that may be worth pursuing if you're looking to go down that avenue.

Wishing you all the best for this year!

How do you write a discursive text??? I’m really struggling for my year 11 Advanced English assignment. :'(

Hey Jade!

So if I had to give an answer, I would definitely look at what the discursive form of text really is. By identifying its different forms and features, it will allow you to identify the critical elements you need to compose a discursive piece. I would start with a basic idea and gradually build on it by incorporating different forms, features and characteristics. But to be honest, I'm not totally sure! If you like, you can copy/paste that question in our English Q+A and one of our English tutors can answer it for you, probably better than I can. Here is the link: https://atarnotes.com/forum/index.php?topic=164556.0

Wishing you all the best for Year 11  :)

Hi Emily!

- How did/would you study for HSC English Advance throughout the year and before an exam
- How did you study for HSC Economics and how did you memorise all concepts and stats

Thanks in advance!

Hi Jen!

So for English Advanced, this was one of my least favourite subjects so I always seemed to neglect my study for it. However, around trials and HSC I really amped it up. I wrote general essays for all of my texts as well as did tables by different themes in each text, providing about at least 4 quotes for each text. This was really key when I did Module B and did poetry. Making your technique and analysis tables all colourful definitely helps you to motivate to study a bit!

For economics, it was definitely my hardest subject so learning the content at times was very difficult for me. However, I made sure I just knew the basic concepts so if at any time in an exam I got stuck I just knew the absolute basics. As I grew more comfortable with the topics, I started adding in and learning more difficult concepts which really allowed me to push into that B6 range. As for statistics I would look at trends rather than trying to just memorise a bunch of a random statistics. This allows you to evaluate the trend and see what factors and why these factors caused a change. Most importantly though, know your very latest stats at the least.

Hope this helps!!

Other question: I heard rumours that you flex niche branded T-shirts. Is this true?

Hey Rui!

I think there is honestly no correct answer to what preparation you can do for the LAT. The questions are very random and unpredictable so there is no really set structure that you can put into motion to study for. However, the UNSW Law website does provide practice papers to similar questions that students will be faced with in the LAT, so I highly recommend having a look at those and even attempting them. Definitely knowing your basic critical analysis and discussion techniques will provide benefit as well.

Oh yes, I do love a niche branded t-shirt. Just bought 2 more last week to add to my collection. Gotta keep up with the fashion hype at uni these days.

Hi!
Recently I've been feeling unmotivated and slow with my approach to studying. It's not as bad as the first term of year 12 (in which I completely fell behind and always rushed to recover before assessments); but I still feel like I'm not in the "routine" most HSC students claim to have been in? As in, I don't do homework, work on assignments and then do some past papers...Rather, I do homework and touch some of my assignments, and call it a night.

By doing that, I've fallen down the Term 1 hole again: I'm depending on holidays to make long-term notes, but I'm not organised at all even then! Specifically with business, I'm not up-to-date with my summaries, although I have started them. I still have to complete Drama and Ancient notes for Term 1's topics, but I just don't know how to stay motivated and on top of my "long-term game"...Please help :(

3. How critical is group collaboration? What strategies do you recommend?

Hi Mr Kip!

Thank you. The result was definitely rewarding after constant hard work and support from my teacher and friends!

1. You are right, I did complete my notes in advance. To fill that very long and void period of time I wrote an essay to every single student learn to in the HSC Business Studies syllabus. The 'student learn to' part of the syllabus is very commonly overlooked by most students so I would HIGHLY recommend students attempting responses for at least the common ones or ones they find the most difficult. I also really amped it up during trials and smash out trial papers on the weekly for a whole term.

2. I was a real big lover of watching the news and always looking/examining the different strategies businesses were implementing. I also made a 'school Twitter account' which provided real time updates and news articles that I could dissect and analyse to see which syllabus dot point applied to them. However, my teacher was also very good at keeping up to date with the news and providing us case studies regularly whether that be on paper or just their past experiences. So always consult your teacher because you never know what they might have up their sleeve!

3. I can't even stress enough how important group collaboration is. Although, most students are hesitant I think it's a really good way to bounce ideas/thoughts off each other and see if there are any other ways that you could have interpreted the question other than what you originally had. Yes, you need to help yourself out but most importantly helping each other out whether that be sending notes when someone is away or just sharing resources because you care really establishes this sense of cohesion amongst the class. Ultimately, it is good if you do well but EVEN BETTER if everyone does well.

Hope this helps you out ;D

Hi Rohit!

What sort of long response questions are you talking about. Short answers, business report, business essay? I might need a few more specific details to give you a comprehensive answer.

Well for products, I would definitely be looking at the different product strategies that relate to the business. So take a look at branding, packaging as well as labelling. To do this, your business would have to look at the results and evaluation from the market research you have conducted, that has assisted in establishing your target market.

Hope this helps!

(Sorry for the question dump!!)  :)

Hey Angelina!!

Well, I finished my whole course notes very early so I had lots of time to write essays. This meant I had started writing essays for Business as early as February but in saying that I wrote essays constantly throughout the whole Year 12 course. I was a person who really liked to plan things out so I would always make time for my other subjects to ensure I was on top of all of them rather than just 1. I wrote them very often so that by the time the HSC rolled around I had over 40+ essays to read over and take out the main points for.

As for uni, there was just always something about UNSW that made me study there. I think it stemmed from even when I was a kid and drove past it quite frequently. The location and social environment was also a big factor in choosing to go to UNSW.

Hope this helps and all the best :)

Hello Emily

i would like to know how you stayed motivated......i personally hate this subject at the moment. I find it hard to keep awake in my business class.

Hey Roydens!

I’m sad to see your heart isn’t with business at the moment but that’s okay! Everyone has these moments where they are just completely unmotivated and honestly just don’t want to do anything. Even for myself like business studies is literally my life but there were points during my HSC where I just couldn’t even look at the content because I was just not feeling it.

I think the best about business though is the flexibility to tailor it to yourself since it is only core topics. If you’re struggling with some of the concepts just sit yourself down with a clear mind and ask yourself “how can I break this down so I can fully understand this”. You can do this by taking a chunk of information and just simplifying it into a few dot points. Trust me it makes your life so much easier.

Another thing is in business you obviously need case studies for your essay and in some cases short answer. Research your favourite clothing brand, different businesses you like and by doing this you’re actually researching businesses that you’re interested in and want to know more about. It definitely takes the burden away of “Oh I just have to do this”.

Lastly, one of the things I did was make my notes look really pretty. When I had established a so called “theme” I wanted to use for my notes it made me motivated to continue doing my notes so they would be perfect for me! Maybe jazz up your notes, use lots of colour and even chuck a few pictures and diagrams in there.

That’s most of my tips, but if you want I have written an article that goes into depth on how to succeed in business studies. You can find it in the Articles section and it’s called “HSC Business Studies: Maximising Marks”.

I hope this gives you some slight motivation but always reach out if you need more help!

Hey!!

Its unfortunate to see that you aren't motivated to study at the moment. Everyone goes through these periods, and I did myself but it's how you make the best of it that really kicks in your motivation.

I recently just replied to another student with a length answer about motivation in Business Studies so give that a read and let me know if you have any more questions!

All the best for Year 12 ;D

Hey Sister Bea!

I definitely love the new profile picture! I wonder who took it??????

My favourite thing about my degree so far is definitely extending and advancing my knowledge from the subjects that I learnt in school. As Business and Legal Studies were 2 of my favourite subject a Commerce/Law degree seemed very fitting. I do also love the social vibes in class.

How did you manage your time in the Business Studies HSC exam? How did you spend the reading time? People say to do the multiple choice first, but others say to start planning the essay and business report. What did you do?

Hey Grace!

I think it is very critical to effectively manage your time in the exam. This becomes easier if you know your syllabus inside out so I honestly can't even stress enough how important it is. In the reading time I immediately flipped to the essay questions and chose the question I was going to do. I then had a quick skim of the business report and short answers and then, had a look at the multiple choice and started doing them in my head if time permits.

Yes, multiple choice is important but so is the business report and essay. Literally as soon as the person running the exam says 'start' I planned my business report and essay for just 5 minutes before I started the multiple choice. The benefit of this is, is that when you actually get to those sections you don't spend like 10 minutes thinking about what you want to write about but rather you can jump straight into writing.

In terms of how I managed my time in the exam, it sort of went like this:
* 1 hour for multiple choice and short answer
* 1 hour for business report
* 1 hour for business essay.

Obviously, this was flexible and would change depending on the difficulty of the exam.

Hope this helps! :)

Hey Ben!

I think your comment of 'my favourite student' is very debatable.

1. Yes, both Jake and I got your email. We will discuss that on Saturday.

2. Business Studies is the best HSC course you can take.

3. No, my study notes are not for sale. However, all my TuteSmart students get exclusive access to these and all the amazing and aesthetically pleasing resources I create each week. If you are interested please click the link in my bio!

4. Definitely the hardest part of operations to learn is the calculations. This would include the Critical Path Analysis as well as the LIFO and FIFO calculations. If you know how to calculate these, you are already ahead of the game.

Hope you have a great night!

Hi Emily,

Just wondering how did you manage your time in year 12? Or just in general, what are your tips for time management - feeling pretty stressed about school because exams are next week ahhh

Hey there!!

In Year 12 time management was very important for me since I did have a part-time job so I always needed to factor that in. As that would reduce the available hours I had to study, I had to be very effective and efficient with the time I did have to study. The way I would sort of go about it was:
* Do the homework I needed for the next day
* Do I have any assessments or exams coming up within the next 2 weeks? If yes, start revising the content and actually applying the content though doing soooo many practice papers.
* Do the extra stuff that I think would help me in preparation for the long-term and the HSC. This would include doing practice essays, student learn to's, etc

Also don't feel stressed out. I definitely stressed way too much in Year 12 so just take a deep breathe and breathe because you got this!

Wishing you all the best! ;D

What are some key Finance questions that are typically seen in exams?? Thanks heaps

Hey Kate!!

Typical finance questions, in terms of the essay, would be looking at how financial strategies can improve financial performance. This would be looking at your liquidity, profitability, efficiency, etc strategies that would help the business improve their financial objectives.

In terms of short answers and multiple choice questions, calculating the different ratio appears in almost every exam as well as just straight out questions on describing/explaining the different financial influences.

Hope this helps :)

My exam is in 3 weeks for HR and Finance. Any tips?

No Ben, you are not in trouble. Just calm down.....

If your exam is in 3 weeks your notes should be done by this week. After that it's all about learning the content for the next week and then in the last week you want to be smashing out as many practice papers and questions you can get your hands on. This will allow you to get your head around the type and style of questions that they could ask you.

Hope this helps!

Hey Emily! I'm a school captain and I do Business Studies. I am often out of class and fall behind on content. What is the best way to catch up on the content from such a content heavy subject?

Thank you in advance, Danny!

Hey, thanks for doing this Q and A. I was wondering how essential is knowing your case studies. My teacher suggested that a case study should be the main focus of business studies and integrated into almost every short answer response. Secondly, what seperates a band 6 student from a band 5 student. Than k you

Hey Danny!

Congrats on getting school captain, that's a massive achievement! As you've stated the only downside is that you are out of class a lot and fall behind on content. What I suggest would be really fostering this sense of class collaboration. This way other students in your class will share with you the notes they have taken or resources that you have missed out on. In saying that, writing your own notes is very good as well. But, in saying that due to time constraints maybe just do really simple summaries with the key info you need to remember. This should help you get back on track!

Wishing you all the best for the rest of Year 12 :)

Hey!

Case studies for Business Studies is sooo important!! The main place you will be using case studies is in your essay where you use them as evidence to back up the strategies you are discussing as well how effective that strategy has been. However, recent trends have shown that case studies in the short answers are becoming more prevalent meaning, they will ask you to provide a 'relevant example'. So knowing as many case studies as you can is very beneficial.

The difference between a B5 and B6 student is going to be the EXTENSIVE knowledge and application of content they have. Also using statistics and establishing a judgement in both your business report and essay will push you into a B6.

Hope this helps!
