Hey there =)
I've just been looking through at the majors that can can be completed for Bachelor of Commerce and Bachelor of Business...and came across Econometrics ???
I looked into it a bit more, checked out the subjects for it, and discovered that I'm more interested in this major than accounting and finance (which is what i previously intended on doing).
I'm just wondering if anyone could provide me with some more information on it, and maybe answer a few questions :)
Is Econometrics a less common major, because i haven't really heard of it until now :P lol.
What sort of jobs does Econometrics lead you too?
Is it a highly regarded major when searching for employment?
From what i've read in the handbook, it seems more maths based than any other major (which is why i fell in love with it straight away :smitten: lol ) So i just want to confirm, is this like the most math-ish major offered? :P lol
I'm so confused about which major i want to do now, atm i'm leaning towards accounting and econometrics...is that a good combination? Or is Accounting + Finance better? If i want to get CA accreditation for accounting, will i have enough space to do both majors?
Haha, so many questions lol. I hope some people can try to help me answer a couple hehe. I would really appreciate it :)
(I can probably come up with even more questions, but that will do for now :P lol)

sorry to make you feel that way :( . Acc/Fin was a good combo :) [you are good at math, just thought it might b hard for a career]

Hehe, you can do what you want. :) Don't just listen to Prav because he wants you to do his course... I believe you should be able to do what you want without anybody telling you otherwise. :D

I don't think econometrics is a major of commerce in itself. It's just a subject you can take (have to take if you want masters in eco?) when you major in economics

In a nutshell, business statistics (to support decision making).
It is very maths heavy, but none so more than Actuarial. But it's getting there.

Econometrics at Monash is run by the dept of Econometrics and Business Statistics, and is a relatively small major compared to others offered under the BCom (except it's a little bigger than the Business Law major).
I just finished my first year at Monash, and did both Econometrics subjects that are available in the first year, ETC1000 (compulsory for all), and ETC1010.
Most of the stuff we covered required no more than a general understanding of Units 3/4 Methods, and most of the material revolved around linear regression - material they really hammer into you. Both ETC1000 and 1010 cover a lot on multiple linear regression, as well as a lot of hypothesis testing (a fairly straightforward idea, you can't go wrong if you follow the steps), and a bit of work learning how to use EXCEL.
As for 2nd year subjects, the selection becomes a bit wider in scope.

Clicking on each subject brings up some information on what it's all about!
If you're interested in the Actuarial studies program (not a major!), check out http://www.buseco.monash.edu.au/depts/ebs/student/undergrad/actuarial/ which shows all the subjects required to gain max. exemptions from external IAA exams. Note that if you do the subjects they propose you end up with a major in Econometrics and a minor from the Accounting and Finance department.

And hmm, i might try a econometrics subject in first year if i have enough space, but i'm not sure if i will or not.
I find it quite hard to figure out what subjects i can do each year to make sure i get the qualifications that i want and meet all the requirements for the course at monash.
I remember going through uom subjects and figured if i wanna do accounting and finance i'll only get one extra subject, all the others are set in concrete :P
And nah, i'm not so interested in actuarial studies. It takes too long to gain gain the qualifications haha.

Monash have a list of compulsory units for each major here (Caulfield) and here (Clayton). They're under 'Units required for specified majors' (they get sorta lazy at the end of the Clayton one though, lol).
Business statistics is compulsory regardless of major, so that may give you a hint of what econometrics is like (but it's also a prerequisite for some marketing units so I don't know for sure).
There's also this pdf on their site that gives a recommended outline of their bbus (accounting) course that I can't be bothered searching for, so I attached it below (they have more for some other courses).
