Title: The English Language Newspaper Articles and Examples Thread
Post by: stonecold on December 01, 2010, 04:26:52 am
POST ALL LANGUAGE RELATED ARTICLES & EXAMPLES IN HERE!

Try to build a big vault of examples which you can all use in you EngLang essays.

I wanted to make this contribution for all of you people doing EngLang in 2011 and beyond.

It seems most schools force students to keep a journal full of language related articles and examples.

I am uploading all of the articles + summaries for the articles I collected throughout 2010.  I think there are over 50 here at least. :D

Many of you will unfortunately be required to keep a journal such as this, which is a very laborious process.  Whilst it is certainly not a bad idea to collect and summarize articles, a far more effective and less time intensive approach would be to have a LogBook of the EXAMPLES/QUOTES ONLY, ready to be used in essay writing, rather than having to go through the articles.

So feel free to use these articles as a contribution to your cuttings journal.  I don't mind if you use the summaries too.  Just be careful that someone from your school doesn't use them too, because then you will get done for plagiarism.

I honestly don't want everyone wasting a day before every SAC like I did finding and summarizing articles to hand in when you could actually be studying.

Hopefully you will find these articles useful, and they will give you an indication about the sort of topics which are up for discussion in your EngLang essays.

NOTE:  If you do not have WinRar or some other Decompression Software installed, then you will need to install it first.  Click here to download WinRar for Windows.

Download Cuttings Journal here :)

The initial folder has left over articles which I thought were average and didn't summarize/submit.  Each of the Term 1-4 folders has the articles + summaries underneath which I submitted for grading at the end of each outcome.  They are in no particular order in relation to the Study Design.

This article could be used to look at the influence of language used in social media - how offensive language on the Internet leads to consequences. Could also provide some insight into semantics/pragmatics by looking into how a 'joke' becomes offensive. Although the example is not Australian, international examples could be relevant when it comes to the Internet and social media.

Title: Re: Resource: My Cuttings Journal/Newspaper Articles + Examples
Post by: stonecold on December 03, 2010, 02:24:05 am
For this Journal I recieved

Unit 3 Outcome 1: 9.5/10
Unit 3 Outcome 2: 10/10
Unit 4 Outcome 1: 10/10
Unit 4 Outcome 2: 8.5/10

Stuffed if I know what the criteria was though.  I am adamant my teacher gave out whatever marks she felt, and used this as an excuse to alter the SAC marks to whatever she liked/whoever she favoured.

Thankyou SO MUCH for posting this. I changed into Language, turns out before the holidays everyone doing language was instructed to collect articles for the end of this week... as part of a SAC! There was meant to be something in with my report... of course there wasn't. Hopefully this will get me by.

Not at all.  You just have to click on slower download and type in the captcha thing.

If I get time, I will put it on MegaUpload.  It is much easier to use...

Thanks for the articles, but according to my teacher and tutor, most, if not all of them are redundant. All of these articles are from 2010 (I'm assuming) and apparently, it is strongly advised that we 2011 students only use articles from our year because previous years' articles are too 'generic' or outdated. But don't take my word for it, I would like some confirmation from you guys whether these articles are still valid.

And why does no one update this much?
Title: Re: The English Language Newspaper Articles and Examples Thread

You could go on news websites and search metalanguage like 'euphemism' or 'language' and look at recent articles, you'll often get a few good examples. I can also think of a few examples you could talk about, like Jennifer Lawrence and her 'armpit vagina'. You could think about how shows like The Project airing at 6:30PM are happy to use the word 'vagina' now that Jennifer Lawrence has used it. Do actors control how language changes? Do Americans have greater influence over language use in Australia? You might also want to consider how squirmy people were about the use of the word 'vagina' in an ad about tampons in 2012 and how last year, an ad was rejected because it used the word and then was rejected again even when they replaced it with 'down there'. (I found those by searching websites!)

Also, the NSW government promoted calling a 'king hit' a 'coward's punch' earlier this month. You could check out if the label has caught on in a few months time. I also remember that The Age had the phrase 'king hit' in the title of one of their articles but then a few hours later changed it to 'coward's punch', so do internet users control language change? Do regular people have more influence on language change than they used it?

This article could be used to look at the influence of language used in social media - how offensive language on the Internet leads to consequences. Could also provide some insight into semantics/pragmatics by looking into how a 'joke' becomes offensive. Although the example is not Australian, international examples could be relevant when it comes to the Internet and social media.

Could potentially be an insightful article to quote from when studying offensive language in unit 3.

This isn't really an example, and it's certainly not a newspaper article, but I wanted to share it. It speaks of the impact of euphemism on society. I encourage you to watch it even if you're just lurking and don't do EngLang.

And if you do study EngLang, you could potentially use something from this video on a discussion on euphemism. The use of euphemism in a number of areas, including politics (always poignant), is often telling. There's always more to words than we think.

Cheers. :)

Hi there,
I found this interesting article while browsing Reddit the other day. Might not relate specifically to 'human' language and interaction but thought it might still be worth posting in case anyone is interested   :P

According to recent research, women now swear more than men.

Quote
The research found that in the early 1990s men said f--k 1000 times per million words, compared to just 167 times for women. But the preliminary results of the latest survey reveal men's use of the expletive has dropped to 540 times, while women now break out the f-bomb 546 times per million words.
