Title: Motivation Corner!
Post by: brenden on July 22, 2012, 06:32:08 pm
Often I find myself coming home from school and watching and reading a plethora of motivational videos, quotes and blogs whilst binging on ridiculous quantities of Coles brand ice-cream and apple juice before doing my homework. If not for online-inspiration I think I'd make a trek to the Westgate. So In response to another user saying they were low on motivation (I think many are, at this time of year) I decided to make a little motivation-compilation for any other user that shares my habits now or in the future. If anyone has a personal little "thing" they read or watch etc, please comment with a link and I'll add it to the thread, for organisation and efficiency's sake! I've decided to split this into two parts. I can't imagine it will be very long when I'm finished so by all means add to it!

Written Motivation
Blogs, quotes, articles etc.
http://rosstraining.com/blog/
-I use this one most frequently, as the author updates his "Motivation" section constantly with videos, stories etc.
http://www.pickthebrain.com/
-Many various posts I could link but gave the general site instead. Contains things like "25 Most inspirational quotes" etc.
http://www.brainyquote.com/
This one has a massive amalgamation of motivational quotes, and also has "Quotes by Martin Luther King Jr." etc, which are in themselves motivational.
http://www.motivateus.com/rememb.htm
-Quotes/blog.
http://www.inspirational-quotes.info/
-If that's not self-explanatory, leave VCE.
Re: Motivation Corner!
Kp's favourite quotes, there's also some on Page 3, definitely read

Auditory/Visual Motivation
Songs, videos, pictures etc
I actually really love the above video. I can recite it from start to finish; I had this glued to my locker door, I read it over and over again before walking into a SAC room.

That doesn't sound like a bad idea at all. Might give that one a go. My current strategy is: wait til recess, period 3 will motivate you to go.

Just a suggestion with the videos Brenden..
Since there's quite a lot of them, do you think we should make a Youtube account so we can have all the videos in a playlist rather than clicking on each video? I'm not too sure if this is AN's account but we could use this one:
http://www.youtube.com/user/atarnotes
Title: Re: Motivation Corner!
Post by: brenden on July 29, 2012, 05:16:22 pm
That's actually a really good idea!
Hahaha, I think that video/account was created during a debate on the value of an Arts degree.
I'll make an account and put the playlist on it to save the owner of that account the work. The account name won't matter, so long as the playlist is on there.

Haha, i've done this as well. I'm horribly forgetful so i also put up post-it notes to remind me to work...except i forget to look at the notes. Big flaw in the system there. I've gotten a fairly decent collection of little quotes together, so, i'll share some (try guess my favourite people and philosophers):

You were not born a carbon copy.

You were born unique, born to excel, born to manifest the glory of the universe in your authentic truth.

You are not weak.

You are stronger than you imagine, wiser than you know, and have vast powers that you have yet to actualize.
Stop playing small.

Be YOU. Tell your truth - now, today, this very moment.

Manifest your true self - not a poor reflection of your circumstance.

Don’t walk through this world unconscious of your greatness, sleep walking, surrendering your light to the bland grey around you.

You were born to be brilliant,

to be light,

to be fire.

Infuse your glory into this moment, into your choices, into your deeds, into the habits you create.

Consciously choose.

Choose your body through conscious consumption.

Choose your attitude, through conscious thought.

Choose your destiny by being present right now – for remember mindful moments multiplied, totally transform tomorrow's.

Today choose integrity, choose discipline, choose joy, choose joy, choose joy.

Rejoice in your blessings AND, most importantly, know that EVERYTHING is a blessing.

And your blessings are rich soil.

So choose to grow into the boldest, proudest, most glorious version of YOU.

You were born for this.

Some quotes from one my absolute favourite philosophers, epicurus. Especially for those of us who aren't religious, meaning isn't readily apparent for us (some people dont care about meaning at all) but i think he's came the closest i've found for a recipe for a good life.

Of all the means which wisdom acquires to ensure happiness throughout the whole of life, by far the most important is friendship.

Do not spoil what you have by desiring what you have not; remember that what you now have was once among the things you only hoped for.

Of all the things which wisdom provides to make us entirely happy, much the greatest is the possession of friendship.

You don't develop courage by being happy in your relationships everyday. You develop it by surviving difficult times and challenging adversity.

Death does not concern us, because as long as we exist, death is not here. And when it does come, we no longer exist. (This one is a fantastic part of his philosophy. It's a lot deeper than one line as well. Death is nothing. It is the end of experience. It will not be a negative or horrible experience, it will be nothing. You do not experience or live through death. He points out that its almost silly to fear death itself. As long as we exist, we are experiencing things, we are alive. When death comes, it is simply the end of experience, we are not there to go through it. So, we should not live in the shadow of death, we should be mindful of it but not fear it. Make the best life we can out of our short window of experiencing it.)

Nothing is enough for the man to whom enough is too little.

If thou wilt make a man happy, add not unto his riches but take away from his desires.

It is better for you to be free of fear lying upon a pallet, than to have a golden couch and a rich table and be full of trouble

The greater the difficulty, the more the glory  in surmounting it.

A free life cannot acquire many possessions, because this is not easy to do without servility to mobs or monarchs.

Riches do not exhilarate us so much with their possession as they torment us with their loss.

It is impossible to live a pleasant life without living wisely and well and justly. And it is impossible to live wisely and well and justly without living a pleasant life.

And my own personal favourite:

Not what we have But what we enjoy, constitutes our abundance.

(A lot of his original work has been lost and i don't buy the attribution of one or two of these to him but they're still good quotes none the less)

KP I'm lovin' your posts in this thread.
A quote that I can't remember where it's from but reminded me of your favourite one:

Am I rich? I don't know. But I'm valuable.

Seasonal bump.
This is it guys.
.5% of all the time you've spent in school remaining.
Right now you can give in to that terrible sucking power that wants you to stop studying and say "Oh I don't care any more" and not make the most of 99.5% of your schooling... or, you can grit it out for 40 more days at the very most and probably 30ish for most of you. You've got a chance that kids would kill for all over the world - what are you going to do with it? The choice is yours.

How to be successful?
Here's the recipe!

Grab a good amount of inspiration, mix it with a few cups of curiosity and roll it on a layer of experience. Then add few drops of luck and stir hard with passion. Later, let it cool for a few hours and check the result. If you're not satisfied, repeat everything but now add a pinch of persistence.
Now serve it with exciting! :)

The road to success can't get any more simpler!!

I should write a post encouraging you call to take a holiday :P. What do you mean by holiday mode? It's really important to take a break so you can come back feisty in Term 2. I'd still do a little bit of homework on the small majority of days, though.

My advice would be: If you find yourself lacking of motivation (due to tiredness, boredom......and many other reasons), take a break (let it be one day, two days or even a whole week).  Once you had your break, go back and study full on.  I believe you will be more productive as the result.

I have a picture of a middle aged woman wearing her McDonalds uniform, in one hand holding her child's hand (her child is wearing tattered public school uniform) and the other hand, a mop.

Definitely something that makes me want to work hard in VCE.

When I feel unmotivated, I listen to music, like not classical or whatever but full on pop, house, rnb just something that gets your blood excited and pumping up and just wanting to jam and bust some moves :)
Or even listen to the music while studying. If you listen to some badass music while studying you'll feel like one. "Hell yeah I'm going to ace this SAC"

Nothing motivates me more than intense classical music, such as Tchaikovsky. Allowing myself chocolate after I do something well helps too. ;P

Hey, I think it's a good time to bump this thread!

I made an extremely eloquent poem for all the cool beans stressin' about their heckin' exams and all:
Beans are brown,
But also red,
Make that frown
a smile instead!

Oh also look at this cute pupper, that is a command.

Set yourself minature headlines and make yourself accountable to someone else for meeting them?

miniturtle has a good tip! I'm just going to add in the thinking process that goes with it.

Okay, so getting down to it, big deadlines aren't a positive motivation. They're anxiety-inducing and they smell bad. You have to focus on the positive aspect of whatever you're studying for or completing - think of how you'll feel when it's done forever. Tick the little boxes each day. Think of what you could do with any spare time if you complete an assignment. Think of the feelings of self-satisfaction and achievement that come with hard work. I look at it all from this angle: there's always, always, someone who's going through worse than you, or is less motivated than you, or understands much less than you do. And yet they still get through. There's no excuses not to do the work. So JUST DO IT. (or, better idea, you could pay me to shout motivational quotes at you :) )

And hey, I bumped this thread for a reason! Take a look through some of Brendingle's good ol' resources on the front page - that's where I stole Mulan from haha. Then get out there and be the man (or woman, because *girl power*) and get shit done <3

(or just do the bare necessities, man I'm right into the Disney hole now)

Not gonna quote the whole thing but OMG this is amazing.

Literally, when I get demotivated I usually do one of three things: cry, go for a walk or stare at a wall (but mostly the last one). This really puts things into perspective (especially as I look negatively at things) and I'm really happy you posted it when you did, right before exams when I am losing motivation! So thanks so much! (I really need to get shit done aye).

Two legitimately productive things I do when not crying, walking or staring at a wall are swearing at myself (i don't know why, it just works and makes me feel bad for doing nothing) and doing other productive work I actually like (example being doing english hw, then becoming demotivated, so i switch to maths temporarily before going back). It really helps! Hopefully some you guys try it out! :)

(or, better idea, you could pay me to shout motivational quotes at you :) )

Just an end note but I'd actually do this  ;D ;D

Write your goals as post-its, or set your end goal as your background on your PC/phone! ^-^
