So I'm currently tutoring three times a week - two one-on-ones and one group of three, with two of those for VCE Spec and Methods and one for Year 9 maths. Its my first year out of high school and also my first time tutoring.
The two VCE classes are going great, but I'm struggling with the Year 9 boy. Maths doesn't come naturally to him and I feel like he's treating tutoring with me as just another maths class - something to be endured. Does anyone have any advice on how I can engage him more? He says he can feel himself getting better but at the same time I can tell he's not really switched on. I'd also love tips on getting him to get more homework, as I'm pretty sure the only time he does any maths out of school is the hour per week he has with me!

Usually finding applications, especially in a field that he likes, e.g. sports, may make it more engaging for him. As for homework, I am actually against the idea of adding additional homework (upon the student's current homework), unless it is necessary, so I actually can't help so much here. If you're talking about him not doing his normal school homework, I would encourage him by discussing with him how this will also help to improve his marks, if he is that type of person that is concerned with them, or would reinforce the stuff you tutored him about and would therefore allow him to benefit the most from both worlds.
