Social purpose and function

Hey guys! Our class is just beginning Unit 3 ignition/orientation and most of us don't have a good grasp over the difference between social purpose and (social) function. It would be great if someone can clarify the distinct differences! Thank you! <3

Hey there!
So function is what the author/speaker is directly trying to do with the text. They are creating the text and are doing so to fulfil this particular task. For instance, the function of the ABC News is to inform about the day's events, while the function of a stand-up comedian's routine is to entertain the audience. There are many other possible functions, such as persuading, honouring, commemorating, celebrating, instructing and promising.
On the other hand, social purpose is what the author/speaker is trying to do socially. Often (but not always) this is to do with decreasing or increasing social distance. For example, the stand-up comedian's routine is probably very informal, and so the social purposes may be to build rapport, encourage intimacy and support in-group membership. On the other hand, the ABC News broadcast is very formal, with possible social purposes of establishing expertise, reinforcing social distance and establishing credibility. VCAA kindly lists some of the common social purposes in the Study Design (link here, p.20-1), so definitely check that out.
(oh, and "social function" isn't a term used in EngLang)

Thank you so much, I would definitely give you a big hug if you said that in real life! I forwarded that to the rest of the class!

IMO social purpose and function is one of the most difficult/least well explained aspects of the entire course. Starting this early puts you in a great position to do super well next year. ;)

I don't know how true that is! However a single class in 2016 received two perfect scores, so maybe it's true! Haha, thank you :)

I love the positive face you have adopted! I'm sure the social distance between us two will be greatly shortened if we keep this up! :D

I know that across all subjects, Balwyn's median is around 34. I've heard the English Language cohort's median can be as high as 38-39, I suppose we do have a really strong class.

Yeah, that's huge! Bodes really well for next year. :)

I'm almost jealous of you getting to study EngLang 3/4 haha. I loved it.

40+ scores for englang last year sorted by score: https://www.quppa.net/studyscores/browse/2016/Grouped%20by%20Subject%20and%20School/Student%20Lists%20Sorted%20by%20Total%20Scores/English%20Language.html

Pretty impressive considering my schools median is 34 raw and has 2 classes, and is still not in top 10 lol. Single class!

Yeah, that's pretty impressive - my school had just one 40+ score!
