So I had a look and saw that there wasn’t a thread for this already so I decided that I’d start one for those of you applying for JMSS next year. I applied this year and (to my shock) got a place so I thought I’d help out some other people.
Test structure:
I’m not going to focus much on the multiple choice because there are plenty of resources for them and to be honest they are a lot easier than everyone says they are - know yr 8&9 basics and you’ll be fine.
Science reasoning: 30 questions in 30 mins
- you don’t actually need to have in depth science knowledge for this, it’s just the application of basic knowledge.
- For example, there was a question where it was a compartment split into 2 parts with a removable barrier and the pressure on either side of the barrier was 120psi so it asked what the overall pressure would be without the barrier.
- Some of these questions were also more like what you would expect in numerical reasoning.
- I’d recommend doing practice ICAS tests to prepare for this as that’s probably the closest thing there is.
- If you do want to study just to be safe this is the basic stuff you should know:
- Physics - light & sound, force
- Chemistry - a basic knowledge of the periodic table, Reactions
- biology - in this case it’s mostly environmental stuff - they seem to like including that.
Mathematics: 60 questions in 30 mins
- This is probably the only test you actually need knowledge for.
- Try to know the yr 7 and 8 curriculum really well and the year 9 basics (trig and quadratics are really important so be confident)
Stuff to know:
- Financial Math - Simple/compound interest, which is the best deal, fractions and decimals.
- Algebra - factorising, expanding, simplifying.
- Surds and indices - index laws, scientific notation, negative powers.
- Simultaneous Equations and inequalities - substitution, elimination, number lines.
- Linear relations - distance, midpoint
- Quadratics - null factor law, expanding and simplifying rules (really just the basics).
- Trigonometry - pythagoras, exact values, SOH-CAH-TOA.
- Geometry - basic angles of shapes, parallel and perpendicular lines.
- Statistics - averages, median, mean, mode.
- Probability - Venn diagrams, tree diagrams, chances of dice/cards.
- It’s also more quick calculations rather than finding the rule for a graph etc.
Numerical reasoning: 40 or 50 questions in 30 mins (can’t really remember)
- These are just number patterns but they use relatively large numbers so they’re harder to work with.
- have a good knowledge of basic factors, multiples and all four main operations with large numbers.
- All in all this one was really easy so don’t stress.
- Do ICAS tests to practice these.
Science writing 1: 30 mins (I think it’s supposed to be 5 reading and 25 writing but because of COVID-19 I think they structured it differently. Still 30 mins total)
-The first one is just a ‘science essay’.
- A lot of people ask about the structure and format of this but it’s just the normal essay structure (intro, 3 main body paragraphs and a conclusion)
- In the intro, briefly introduce the issue, explain why it is an issue and outline your points.
- in the main body paragraphs, use as much as the info possible to support your points and add in some additional stuff (I talked about how we end up eating the micro beads through food chains and webs)
- In the conclusion, summarise everything and make a final statement on how the issue could be solved.
- you get a page of information, diagrams, statistics etc. to help you write about the topic. Try to include as much of this information as you can.
- The topic I got this year was about micro bead pollution in marine environments.
- Along with the topic and info page, they give you dot points about what to write - try to use these as the subtopics for your individual paragraphs. E.g. what are some ways this issue could be solved by both individual people and larger companies/government? In what ways is the issue leaving lasting effects on the environment? etc.
- To practice just be fluent at writing and make sure you mentally prepare before starting - it’s better if you write well but don’t finish than finish but write a bad essay.
Science writing 2: Same as science writing 1.
- This one is part of a prac report. This year we had to write a discussion and aim. This might not seem like a lot but if you write it properly it should take the full time.
- An important thing to remember that I know a lot of the people I talked to didn’t do is to structure you’re discussion properly - it has different points so make new paragraphs for discussing different parts of the prac.
- In case you haven’t learned to form your own discussion these are the basics:
- point out the difference in the results when the independent variable was changed and explain the scientific reasoning behind it. This can be done in two small paragraphs or one big one.
- Explain errors, how they may have occurred and how to prevent them in the future ( they will usually purposely put an error in the results so make sure to check)
- There are also dot points to include for this one. E.g. how can the results apply in real life? What does this tell us about heat conductivity? For this, try to provide examples to support your answer.
- The final thing that is important but not too important is the variables. Discuss them in a paragraph and say why the controlled variables had to be controlled. Leave this for last because it’s probably the least important part (I forgot it and was still fine).
- They give you the results to an experiment - the topic I got was about the effects different temperatures have on hyacinth bulbs. I knew absolutely nothing about this but it gives you some background info and the results so it was still good.
- Is recommend briefly revising the prac structure so that you are confident and have one less thing to worry about.
- Have a look at pracs that come with discussion questions to see how they relate to the experiment and then practice coming up with your own before looking - this isn’t really something you can get wrong but a lot of people freeze up on it. If your school uses the oxford textbooks there are some in the back otherwise you should be able to find some online.
That’s really all there is to the test. A piece of advice: if you don’t know how to work out a question immediately, skip it and come back at the end, leave nothing blank (guess if you need to) and estimate answers and pick the closest option rather than wasting time working them out.
You don’t necessarily have to study or go to tutoring (most people said tutoring wasn’t worth it). I didn’t study at all but still got in. I don’t know my specific results get but I’ll update when they send them out - I got superiors in NR, SR and both science writings and a HA in maths.
This year 1000 people applied and 500 got an interview.
For the interview:
I’m not sure if this is always the case but I had to write a CV (someone let me know from previous years)
There were 4 questions to answer with paragraphs:
- What is your proudest achievement in the last 3 years?
- Who do you most look up to and why?
- If you could invite 4 people from any time period to a dinner, who would you invite and why?
- What is the biggest ‘life lesson’ you have learnt and how did you learn it?
- don’t be boring with these. E.g. don’t pick Albert Einstein or Isaac Newton etc. to bring to you dinner or as your role models. I chose Beethoven, Galileo, Cleopatra and someone from 4000 CE but still linked it all in to my life ambitions and what I was interested in.
- They do ask for yr 8 semester 2 and yr 9 semester 1 reports so try to make sure they’re as good as possible.
- Try to do some sort of leadership, sport and music as they want well rounded people and it’ll be leaving a huge section out if you can’t.
- Bring in interesting certificates - first place at a sport, a language award etc.
- I didn’t have any science awards... at all so instead I wrote about how I’d rather participate in experiences rather than competitions to actually learn more (lectures, synchrotron, open days etc.)
As for the 1 on 1 interview itself, there are 2 interviewers. These were the questions I got:
- Pick a word and explain what you think of when hearing that word between science/scientist and invention/discovery?
- If you could be prime minister and could do one thing in science/energy/technology/environment what would you do and what would you aim to achieve in 4 years?
- What is your proudest achievement?
- What future studies/careers are you considering?
- How have you dealt with remote learning? (You probably won’t get this one)
- How do you balance study and other commitments? Strategies.
- Any questions? ASK AS MUCH AS YOU POSSIBLY CAN ABOUT ABSOLUTELY EVERYTHING.
The most useful piece of advice I could give you is be unique, think through your answers before answering and say something you think only you would be able to say. E.g. I didn’t actually pick a proudest achievement, I just talked about how I was proud of participating in so many opportunities to make the most of my life.
Be friendly - say hello and smile, it goes a long way.
The interviews are where the competition gets tough (only 200 of 500 people get in) so make sure you communicate how enthusiastic and passionate you are through your answers as they won’t directly ask.
If you read this far CONGRATULATIONS!!!
Good luck for applying! I wish you all the best!
Feel free to ask questions.
:) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :) :)

It was actually 30 questions for Science reasoning. The maths and NR tests are easier and if you get superior for the selective test these tests will seem like nothing.

Hi Guys!
I know you guys are preparing for the jmss entrance exam so here are a few useful tips and words of advice! I highly recommend you guys checking out the threads from previous years (the 2019 was fairly long but worth the read - especially near the end where everyone started discussing questions from the actual test and interview).
If any of you guys wanted any extra help, I’m more than happy to! I’ve tutored several students for the jmss entrance exam over the past couple of years, with nine of my students being accepted into the 2021 cohort. Being a jmss graduate myself, and having taught several current jmss students, I can say with confidence that I know the tests better than most people. I will be taking in two streams of classes, with the extensive course starting late November and the Exam focus course starting in February. I will provide both theory lessons and several mock exams to ensure that you are well prepared for the day. Feel free to contact me for any further enquiries!

Hi,
Just wondering if you could answer some questions:
Did u attend any tutoring services, and if yes, which tutoring services?
For the science writing 2, which is like a practical, how can u find our background knowledge so when you sit the actual exam, it is easier to write your essay? (sorry this is pretty hard to answer)
Around how many superiors do I need to get to get into JMSS?
Which test did you find the hardest?
Thank you for your guide and information, it has really helped!
-
I didn’t get any tutoring for the exam but my friends who did and got in either had private tutors or went to JAC - don’t stress about the tutoring bcoz a lot of ppl said it was way harder than the test and also didn’t help except for time management and the maths.
For the background knowledge, Make sure you know basic yr 8 and 9 science (you probably do anyways if you’re applying). If you know all that stuff and read through the info sheet really carefully you’ll be fine. There are questions to guide what you should write and you have all the results etc. (I probably explained this really bad sorry) - most ppl do worst on this so the standard isn’t incredibly high. Don’t stress it.
Superiors - some ppl I know got in with 1, the hardest part is the interview - from there I know ppl who got 5 superiors and didn’t get in but some with 1 did.
Math was definitely hardest - just bcoz I’m bad at math and it’s hardest for time (the questions are all pretty basic though).
-
Thank you so much, that really helped!! :)

Hey, I'm a year 9 student going for the 2022 entry and just have some questions
-What Books and resources did you use to revise for the tests
-What things do I need to know for the scientific writing part of the test and do you suggest any resources to learn about. I am someone that has never written science reports and doesn't know too much on it
-How did you deal with the time pressure and manage it especially in the maths and numerical reasoning
-What sort of studies and tests did you do to prepare
-What sort of questions came in the Science reasoning test and what subjects do I need to know on it
Thank you so much in advance and taking the time to answer and read this ;D ;D ;D
-
Heyyy
I'm applying for JMSS and was wondering when the test will take place? Also do I still stand a chance to get accepted if I cover year 9-10 maths books and cover year 8-9 science books, without doing any tutoring? Is the test similar to the selective school exam I took the test but unfortunately didn't get accepted :(
Thanks for taking the time to read I really appreciate everyone's help ;D

- For books I just used the Oxford science 8/9 and the Cambridge maths 9 (just my schools textbooks). As for resources, I didn’t really use anything else but I did spend some time looking through the previous threads on AN to see what previous tests had on them/how hard etc.
- For the scientific writing, there isn’t much you can do to prepare specifically for it - there is a lot of info on the info sheet and just make sure you use as much of it as possible. If you do want to do something else just read through a few science news articles to see what’s relevant as that will probably be similar to the topics.
- for math, I just did all the questions I could do first and then went back through after for the harder ones. Most of them I just estimated and then picked what was closest to my estimation. NR isn’t nearly as hard for time pressure though.
- tests to prepare - I literally just did my school tests and studied really hard for them but I know some other people did old ICAS tests and said they helped. If you do tutoring or have friends who do it you can ask them for their practice tests and use them too.
- science reasoning - you don’t need to know any super complex or detailed stuff, the yr 8/9 curriculum stuff will cover it all. Most of the questions, they gave you some info then asked a question based on the info. it’s a mix of physics, chemistry and bio stuff. If you do the morrisby careers thing next yr, the questions are actually really similar to the ones in the ‘mechanical thinking’ part.

- the test is usually around the end of June - last years was supposed to be 26th ish of June so the results come out around the middle/end of term 3.
- covering the yr 9/10 math and 8/9 science will be enough for you to be successful - I only did that and with no tutoring so you should be fine.
- I didn’t do the selective schools exam but everyone who did both said that the JMSS one was easier by far so if you even did moderately well in the selective schools one you should be able to do well.
A lot of people have been asking about how to structure the science writings - for the essay, it’s the basic essay form you should have learnt in year 7 or 8:
Intro - just say what the issue is and the 3 major things you will discuss
Main body - use the info sheet and put in all the relevant info (3-ish times)
Conclusion - sum everything up and propose your solution to the problem (if it asks for you to do that, otherwise just a sentence or two about the issue)
The ‘paragraphs’ will be small so don’t try write ridiculous amounts.
The prac report - use the basic order of things (aim, hypothesis, discussion then conclusion). There will be dot points to guide you - leave a small gap between your answers to each dot point, despite what many ppl think the discussion doesn’t have to be one large chunk. The conclusion should also only be 1 or 2 sentences.
There are 2 good ways you could do these:
1. Briefly answer all the dot points you have to, leaving spaces to go back and add in the details after.
(If you’re not very good at writing this was helpful to some people)
Or
2. Go through and answer everything in as much detail as you possibly can.
(If you are good at writing in lots of detail and lengthening responses/making it flow nicely, this is good)
- these 2 strategies mean that you will have either answered all the points or written an impressive answer but to only a few points or, best case scenario, both.
- just make sure you don’t rush through and write a really bad, messy, unorganised piece.
Hopefully I answered everything :)
(Yes I do have a problem with writing really long responses to everything so just let me know if it’s annoying to have to read and I’ll try fix it)

im trying out for jmss as well lol,
can someone who has done the test help us out ?

THIS RLLY HELPED A LOT

Another person who was accepted into JMSS for yr 10 2021 created a bunch of useful info - this is VERY specific (you don’t need to worry about being a genius in all the areas listed, just make sure you know the general yr level curriculum stuff relating to the topics):
So…
You are preparing for year 10 JMSS entry exams, this document has some advice that I've gathered from a lot of places, most notably ATAR notes, JMSS discord server, Instagram group chats and youtube. All this information is just meant to be a guide, and I cannot promise everything on here will be on the current exam, I've just taken what I've learnt about previous years, this is just meant to be a study guide, not the study law. I personally did not study as much as I thought I was going to when I decided to apply. I did not attend tutoring, but I bought one set of tests from the company that runs the tests - https://www.edutest.com.au/pa-online.htm - and they helped me personally. I also watched a lot of this Youtuber who covers selective schools and this vid in particular:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2q-KK8tkhJU&t=164
And below are some other useful links!

Mathematics
Tests your knowledge of mathematics concepts. Any of these topics can be tested so make sure to try to learn as much of these before you can. Here are just some basic things you should know, not all of them will be covered. Honestly its better you get quicker at simple mathematics and basic algebra in written equations than learn one particular subject at a year 10 level that will only be in 3 questions
Financial Mathematics – simple interest, compound interest, depreciation
Algebra – factorising, expanding, simplifying
Surds & Indices - Index laws, rationalising the denominator, negative fractional powers
Simultaneous Equations & Inequations - substitution, elimination, number lines
Linear Relationships - gradient formula, distance, midpoint
Rates and Proportion - direct proportion, indirect proportion, conversion from percentage to ratio, unit conversion
Trigonometry - Pythagoras
Mensuration - all 2d & 3d area, surface area and volume equations (only 1-2 questions but it matters)
Geometry - angles of shapes, parallel lines, perpendicular lines
Statistics - interquartile range, average, median, mean, mode etc
Probability – venn diagrams, conditional prob, tree diagrams, dice, and card prob.
Quadratics
Numerical Reasoning
To sum it up it is more of an IQ test around numbers. A lot of patterns and worded problems will be presented, so it is up to you to turn them into formulas or mathematical methods of calculation. Sometimes it is best to take a formulaic approach, but just being able to look at the differences in a sequence is really important.
Number patterns – a good 10 questions in 2020 were something like
2 4 8 16 ? 64 find the missing number
An understanding of sequences and series can help
Financial Questions
Interest
Depreciation
More profitable company - etc
Time Questions
Starting late and finding the new end time.
Visual problems
Graphs
Tables
Factors
Multiples
Prime
Quick Math
Science Reasoning
For the most part, the science reasoning exam is about interpreting information. On the 2020 exam, there was a question involving pH, but the test explained how to read a pH indicator. But it is good to know a few of the basics within the core fields of science. This exam checklists just outlines the potential topics that could be covered.
1. BIOLOGY
Cells - Organelles
Photosynthesis
Ecosystems – food chains and food webs
Nervous system
The body
Brief knowledge of DNA/RNA
2. CHEMISTRY
First 20 elements
Periodic Table Groups
Organic molecules
Reactions between elements - finding precipitation
3. PHYSICS
Laws of motion distance/time = speed
Heat
Weight
Light (relationship to convex shapes ect.)
4. EXPERIMENTAL DESIGN INTERPRETATION –
Variable Identification
Independent
Dependent
Control
Precision
Accuracy
5. EXTRA TOPICS
Geology – Rocks
Science Analysis & Reporting (One of 2 essays)
A science practical report is provided, and certain questions need to be answered. Normally, it is a basic report and will rely more on your ability to interpret information rather than your science knowledge. For 2020 you were given a lab report and had to write and expand on that, ie how to improve it and what it meant/real-life applications. This part of the exam is answered with an essay. I couldn’t think of anything to write about to other essay in particular, but message me if you have any questions!
The big day
- make 100% sure you have everything they ask you to bring!
- you probably shouldn’t study the day of the exam, you won't learn anything new, and will probably make yourself more nervous
- get a good nights sleep, go to bed early, the extra sleep is more important than staying up late studying
- Sometimes the building gets a bit cold, so bring a jacket if you are allowed!
- for the sake of everyone in the hall, bring tissues!
- Stay away from nervous people, they'll make you nervous, it's like a contagious disease and no-one wants a disease *insert cardi b saying coronavirus*
- Bring some water with you to the exam but leave it on the ground, you do not want to drop it all over your work by accident (it does happen, and everybody hears the clang)
- When you get into the exam hall and if your table is wonky or you can't see the clock or something, LET THE SUPERVISORS KNOW before the start as they can help you get a new seat or fix up the table or something. Sort out all the problems beforehand, don’t leave it until when your time counts
- Fill in your answer sheet, NOT the question booklet (unless the instructions say otherwise, ALWAYS go with the exam instructions!)
- Answer every question, even if you don’t know the answer, you have a 25% chance of getting it right
- Keep an eye on the clock at all times and make sure you attempt the whole paper to the best of your ability, work out how long you have on average to complete each question on average and don’t feel afraid to skip a question to come back to later
- make sure your question and answer sheet match up so you don't fill in the next answer where that one should have been and then screw up your whole sheet, it takes ages to fix up.
- If rubbing a bubble out, rub it out completely!
- If you finish a paper early, go back and check over your answers!
Final Note:
Keep calm, the fact that you're that interested in getting into these schools by asking for help is impressive, you're MILES ahead of everyone else (I didn’t even know about the schools' existence in January!), take some confidence in that and always remember this if your nerves start taking over on the day
If it doesn't go well for you, don't lose faith in your academic prowess, maybe it wasn't your day. It's definitely possible to do well elsewhere with the right attitude and appropriate study, and there are so many ways to get into what you want to do later in life!
Good luck!
Once again, you don’t need to be a complete genius in all these areas - I.e. for ‘trigonometry’, just know the basic ratios etc. as you don’t have a calculator and they won’t expect you to actually calculate the things.
Closer to the date, read through all the exam tips again - these are all pretty useful.
Thanks to ‘lawlesseggboi’ for putting this list together!

Good luck!

OMG THANKYOU THIS HELPED A LOT, especially since u went into so much detail
is it enough time if i start studing today? because idk when the exam is and i havent even registered for admission cuz the websites acting up for me
anyways, thanks for the advice and tips!
have a happy new year :))

I ended up doing 59/60 of the questions but that’s just coz I forgot to go back to the last one when I finished. I only guessed a few (maybe 5?) but it was still good enough for me to get an above average. I am also bad at math and didn’t study for it so... yeah.

To double check, this thread is for people in year nine this year (2021) and (considering) applying for JMSS for Year 10 (2022)?

Yep

Yeah most of my friends did that and got superiors but I'm really bad at math so even though I almost finished, I reckon I didn't get much right.

What study did you do for the test?
As in for math and science did you go through chapters of your textbook or do practice tests as I'm currently doing practice tests and going through my textbook for maths and science?

That’s all I did and I ended up actually doing well on the test

did you do any tutoring?
-
Nah ppl from past years said it wasn’t worth it
-
oh, do they prioritise superiors in science or are they all equal
-

Everything’s equal coz there are some ppl who want to go to JMSS for technology or math and not necessarily science.

oh ok, im doing jac for jmss is it any good?

oh ok, im doing jac for jmss is it any good?
Yeah, a lot of ppl from there always get in and it’s definitely one of the best for JMSS specifically. Just remember that it is also supposed to be a lot harder than the exam itself.

yep thanks for the advice

hi! I've been studying for the test since your post came out and I've gone through my yr. 8 science and math and my yr. 9 math as well but I'm stuck at how to practice for both of the writing tests. 🙃
Can anyone help with how to get resources for this??? The selective test that we wrote last yr for math was rlly hard... so I can't tell what simple questions mean...😓
otherwise thx! your posts rlly help.

Some good ways to study for the writing (I checked what friends and classmates did):
- read some science articles and see what’s really relevant on websites like, https://www.sciencenews.org/
https://www.sciencedaily.com/news/top/science/
http://www.sci-news.com/
Go to the environmental sections bcoz that’s probably where the topics will be similar to the test.
- Pick a random issue and practice finding main points and writing short introductions and conclusions.
- see if you can find any pracs in the back of your science books (the kinds that come with the questions to base your discussion off) and make up a reasonable set of results to practice writing a discussion with.
- do the same as above but write a discussion without looking at the prompt questions and then check to see if you left anything out.
Those are the main things most ppl did. If you’re good at English anyways and get good grades in it at your school than you shouldn’t worry about it as much (but you’ll be fine either way) I just know a lot of ppl in accelerated or enhanced English didn’t bother preparing for this and got superiors.
The math is easier than the select entry exam (unanimous opinion) and the questions look similar to this:
- solve 2.6 x 7.9
- factorise x2-5x+6
- (provides triangle) what ratio is needed to find x
So really it’s not that complicated (and it’s multiple choice so it’s faster anyways).
-
Thx for the reply! For the math, are those the hardest questions or are they what you would see in general? What sort of questions would you expect for numerical reasoning?
Sorry for the inconvenience and thx again :)
-

dw about it it's no inconvenience :)
yeah those questions are just generally what you see in the math - the hardest questions for me were just more complicated versions of those (simplifying harder equations etc).
The numerical reasoning questions are mostly number patterns (21, 6, 42, 8, 84, 10, ? - what is ?) and i also think there were a few random finance questions as well but its nothing where you'll need to do calculations and everyone i know finished it early.
-
Thank you so much!

do you know if the test for year 10 is easier than the test for selective for year 9
-
:) Hello, I am an applicant of JMSS Exam this year ~ I am soooo confused about how the mathematics part will turn out, can any of you give me like a ranking out of 10 for how hard it is??? for reference, please rank the mathematics exam of MHS as welllll thank u ;)
Also, I will be grateful if you can just give me a few examples off the maths question ;D appreciate it.
P.S. Good luck this year’s applicants! 8)
JMSS math: 4/10its really only hard coz of the time limit
MHS math: 6 or 7/10
so yeah the JMSS one is a lot easier than the MHS one and you'll probably also find the math is a little less competitive as a lot of ppl who end up getting in are good at science but not math.
The questions themselves are rlly similar to the ones on the edutest practice tests but in saying that those tests are a complete rip off and only rlly help for the math so I wouldn't recommend buying them.
A few examples:
1. *shows a graph with an arrow* what is the true bearing?
2. simplify: a-3 * 5-1/y-3
3. *provides shape with given angle* Find the value of angle x.
4. expand and simplify: (2x-1)(3x+2)(5x-1)
5. what is 9629091 expressed using scientific notation to 3 significant figures?
6. 3.29/5.6
7. Simplify √42 / √7
8. calculate the simple interest earned on an investment of $1000 at 5% p.a over 3 years. (this i know came up in the numerical reasoning as well)
yeah sorry this isn't the best for giving you examples but those questions are pretty similar to what i remember.
do you know if the test for year 10 is easier than the test for selective for year 9
the math and numerical reasoning are definitely easier but apart from that the tests are pretty different so if you find writing easy, youll find the test as a whole easier but if you find it more difficult youd find it harder. The science reasoning is rlly easy though and i wouldnt rlly bother studying for that one.
for me, yes it was easier.
Also a few ppl have messaged me about general school life stuff and whether or not it was worth going so if you do have any questions just about JMSS in general im happy to answer them :)
-
do you know if the practice tests for selective on the vic website are accurate to the math and numerical reasoning for jmss
-
hi! would you most likely see balancing equations on the science reasoning test?
-
Hi! I am planning on doing the year 11 entry for JMSS and I have found this thread to be more then helpful so I thank all of you who have taken the time to post. My question is that how can I obtain practice tests for science skills and knowledge as I believe those are the places I need the most practice.
-

I believe you can try the icas papers for science. It was pretty useful.
:)

For anyone planning on doing the year 11 entry this year, do you guys want to make a discord server where we can discuss and generally help each other out? If there is already such a server could someone please let me know ;D
-
Sorry for asking so many questions but if anyone has any science practice tests could you please send them over, it would be much appreciated ;D

Hv u heard of Jayce Ballatones? His practise tests seem to be a decent price.

Hey I was just wondering what the questions on the science reasoning test will be like? And what sort of things should I do to prepare for the science reasoning?
sorry for the inconvenience and thanks ;D
-
Hello, I was just wondering (if we pass the exam and get an interview) how much of an effect school reports and special awards will have on the result?
My school report last year isn't the best because I didn't cope well during the COVID-19 pandemic. Do you think they might make an exception for that?
-

You can't really prepare for the science reasoning questions as they are reasoning and it is related to how you interpret graphs and diagrams more than general knowledge. If you really wanted to, you could go through the year 9 science content but if you're doing well in science right now then there is no need.

Don't worry about your school reports from last year and focus on making this years reports as good as you can. I had terrible grades in year 8 cause of annoying teachers. In year 9, i got my stuff together and tried as hard as I could. Ended up doing pretty well. I also didn't have many awards or extracurriculars and I somehow ended up getting in.

hi everyone, i believe that i have sufficiently practiced for the mathematics part of the exam, but I'm struggling on what to study for the science. I think studying for the science reasoning is almost impossible as its quite a lot of knowledge. Is there any advise on what I should do. I tried finding some icas but couldn't really find many! should I go through a whole science textbook or something?
Thanks :)

im actually having the same trouble, but I did go through the entire year 8 textbook. I quit when I started my year 9 textbook bcoz it got kinda repetitive aha. So im only doing chapters like sound, light, energy and bio related stuff (so i guess physics and bio??)
Im not sure if what im doing will help but i thought id share haha. sorry if i didnt help tho. :)
But do you mind giving tips for the maths? I'm getting kinda lost these days.
-
Thank you for this! I just went through my maths text book from this year, and I also went through quadratics! There are lots of lists on which particular stuff you should study :)

They definitely will make an exception, remember you have your interview before they look at your report cards, and judging by the way my 2020 report card looked (I failed 1 science tests and 2 maths tests) they value the interview more.
Awards are important, but dont higlight it if you dont have any. I got my Australian Scout Medalion as well as a few science competition awards, and they help to show that you're a well rounded student who exceeds what they need to do. They like well rounded student. If you need any help just ask or pm me whatever

just a question - are the tests strive for excellence provide similar to the real test?

Hi! does anyone know how many people sit the year 11 and entry and roughly how many people get in. finally, how many sups does one need to get an interview?
Thank you ;D

Where can I find the year 11 entry atar notes for 2022
-
Hi! does anyone know how many people sit the year 11 and entry and roughly how many people get in. finally, how many sups does one need to get an interview?
Thank you ;D
It is dependent on the school you attend, but roughly 2000-ish students sit the test and around 200-250 get in. The rule of thumb is you need to get an interview in order to get in. Normally you should try to aim for 2-3 superiors just to be safe for an interview.
-
so the 3% cap? Does it apply for after the interviews or before?
cause there are rlly smart ppl in my school

Hi, as a current year 10 student at jmss I’m not too sure about the number of people who usually apply for year 11, but this year there were 22 new year 11s I believe. From what I’ve heard, between 10 and 30 usually. Best of luck!
-
quick question. for the practice tests I've been doing (I'm trying to get into year 10 2022), I've noticed that the maths questions are all a bit like worded problems, and they're more numerical if anything. does anyone know whether the actual test is just a bunch of worded problems or just straight-up questions and equations?
-
Who is trying for the year 11 entry into JMSS, entry in 2022. Any tips for such people applying and content to cover. Also can anyone provide anymore information about this, any advice? Also I would like to know how many people apply for the year 11 entry and how many of these people get selected?
Best of luck to all others applying! 8) ;D :D

Hey :D. As someone also planning on doing the year 11 entry had the same question as you but fortunately, I was able to go on the school tour and ask one of the teacher and normally it's between 180-200 students sit the year 11 test. I just heard that restrictions have been reinstated so does anyone know if we will have to do the test online (year 11 entry on the 29th)? As of writing this the test is only four days away so wish all of you guys the best of luck and I'm excited to see everyone on the day :)
-
Hi there, I am also very excited for the exam and I also don't have much information regarding the test, if it is online or it will be at the school as planned or if it will be going ahead at all?
If you have information about this please let us know, any information is appreciated.
Thank you, Best of Luck to all my fellow peers!!

1. I have heard a lot about how in the interviews youre supposed to bring awards, certificates etc. I cant think of any that I have and will that be a major issue?
2. If I just bring my reports would I most likley not get accepted or has someone thats enrolled at JMSS done this?
3. I am getting told that what people would do in my position would make things up and is that something common in JMSS interview?
4. Also is there only 1 interview where you are by yourself and how many teachers interview you?
lol don't make things up. they'll be able to tell who's lying or not, they've been interviewing people for years now. also bad karma
-
1. I have heard a lot about how in the interviews youre supposed to bring awards, certificates etc. I cant think of any that I have and will that be a major issue?
Have done any volunteer work before? Or any extracurrics? I think presenting stuff like that will help. There are lots of forums from years before abt this. I've heard that not bringing any extra "achievements" won't help impress the interviewers much. And hey, there's a long time till the interviews, so why not start something now? (or after the exam)
good luck tho :)
ps. as alomoac said - best not make things up. Them figuring it out is a 95% chance.
-
so the 3% cap? Does it apply for after the interviews or before?

After the interview so you could still get in even if ur not quite as smart as them through interview performance (for me there were SO MANY smart ppl from my school who didn’t pass interview)

For the most part it is just straight up questions and equations in the math bcoz u don’t have enough time to read through an explanation and then also do the math. Worded questions appear in the numerical reasoning.

Not sure what u could do for the test (probably just cover all the yr 10 and some 11 stuff if u can) but be prepared if u get an interview bcoz for the yr 11 ones they tend to focus more on what your plans for vce are and after school to make sure moving schools won’t negatively affect u). Usually they’d give out up to 25 spots for yr 11 entry coz the yr levels max is usually 225 but they already accepted 225 ppl so my best bet is they’ll aim to go to approx. 250

If u guys still haven’t heard any info yet then the test will definitely be postponed rather than be online again so you have a few more precious days to revise. You will get an email a day or two before whenever it is explaining everything (I’m kinda assuming as it was supposed to be tmr u guys already know)

I wouldn’t advise only bringing your reports - even if u don’t currently do much stuff you can mention any sports/instruments/or co curricular things you have done in the past (they don’t nose into whether or not u still do or how good u got). Shoot me a message if u get through to interviews and still need to find some stuff. Unless ur an amazing liar (and I’m talking professional acting skills) don’t make things up. They can tell and u get immediately disadvantaged. Last yr there was just you and 2 interviewers (one taking notes and one asking the questions) but usually they do a bunch of group problem solving things beforehand where teachers walk around and take notes and then do the interview.
Sorry I haven’t answered anything for ages, I kinda took a little break :)

what's the order of the tests? and are we most likely doing the test online?

Looks like the exam will be sat in person, for year 10 2022 on the 24th and 25th of July, for year 11 the 17th I believe. Best of luck to everyone sitting it!
As for the order, I believe it is something along the lines of scientific reasoning, numerical reasoning, one of the written ones, then a break (or it was when I did it). Then the main maths one and the other writing. I don’t really remember though hahaha
With the maths section, just focus on doing a bunch of questions quickly. As you would know, there are 60 questions in 30 minutes, so speed is key (from memory, the questions on there could’ve been completed in no time with a scientific calculator so I wouldn’t really stress content wise). Mainly just try to do factorising, surds, basic trig (sohcahtoa), basic geometry, linear and some quadratics.
Again, best of luck, you lot are gonna smash it!

what textbook do I use to study for math and science part of the test?
-
Do you guys know (mostly for math) what percentage we need for a superior. I'm doing a few practice tests and I would like to know if I have made the mark. Does anyone know or have guesses approximately? Thanks :)
-

Superior should be anywhere above 45/60 for maths however there's no real way of knowing since the exam and the examinee changes every year and nobody is told what score they get after the test, you are only told how well you did against the average. Just do the absolute best you can. :D
-
Has anyone heard anything from Edutest regarding the test? Considering the year 11 entry test was scheduled for this Saturday but now I am hearing there will be another lockdown. Any information will be extremely appreciated :D.
-
hey i might be a little late and don't expect a response but since there is a lockdown, I do expect some sort of extension on the year 10 entry but I'm not sure. either way, does anyone have any tips on the structure or how to write the science writings? i don't have too much prior knowledge on it and if anyone has any personal tips that would be helpful:)
-
Hey I'm applying for JMSS next year for Year 10 to Year 11. Wondering if anyone know or can give tips on what to study? Since I wanna prep for the exams.
-
welp, so it's... online
It also said there are only 3 assessments.
I assume this means we're only doing Mathematics, Numerical Reasoning and Science Reasoning? (and not doing the two essays?)
-

WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH NOOO I DONT WNAT IT TO BE ONLINE WAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
-
Yep, it is online ahh! Anyway, i'm genuinly confused on how they figure out that someone isn't cheating. Like what if someone is using a calculator or using a website etc? Ofcourse hopfully nobody cheats, but what if some do? How will they know? Do y'all have any idea? Hate that we're doing it online tho :(
-
won't it be more comfortable to do it online? Sucks that the might be cancelling the writing part tho. :(
-
wait so we dont have like cameras on or anything? dear lord honestly i just want to get it over with so i can go back to having a social life :,) good luck everyone!!
-
Does anyone know if cameras are required? ??? Just wondering because my computer does not have one a camera so I may need to purchase one.
-
They didn’t mention anything abt cameras in the statement document. They have too much faith.

yea like, my own mom suggested that she can help me quickly if im stuck. i'm not too sure if i want to i mean, i guess i would like to genuinely pass on my own but then again because of circumstances like, just a bit tempting :(

ik it can be tempting but i feel too guilty to cheat because i know how unfair it would be on other kids. also bro like what if karma or smth hits that's scary asf
-
also, wouldn't this mean that we're gonna get our results quicker now that writing isn't in the way? I'm pretty sure machines correct the multiple-choice ones so that would mean that the interview results would come quicker than usual?
-
out of the 1000+ people that are attending the test how many will be accepted from the first round?

400-500

yeah true, best to pass or even be unsuccessful but trying fairly. lets just hope the whole online test thing goes smoothly because complications can be scary asf
-
The amount of faith that Edutest and JMSS has in the applicants is way too much. But it is best to not cheat. Couldn't live with the guilt and karma
-
SO.............................. you guys feel ready?
I feel like i might choke with the numerical reasoning test but idk man test been put off for so long sort of excited to do it
I'm pretty confident in science reasoning but ik I might struggle with maths bcs of timing. also, i'm lowkey grateful writing got cancelled cause i literally had NO IDEA how to prepare for it kjsdnjdf.
thing is everyone i know keeps saying the test is super easy so I'm excited to see if it really is. like everyone on atarnotes was like 'oh the test was easy' like okay broski ill be the judge of that 🤨
-
is everyone doing it on the 24th or are the days still split?

I'm on the 24th as well what time is urs?

I'm on the 24th too, it said to login between 8:30-8:45 am for me
-
My test is at 11..
-
My test is at 11..
yeh mine starts at 11 too ,kinda feeling lucky that i get to sleep in lmao
-
Apparently maths is said to be mostly quick calculations and you can get through alot of it form what iv read on previous forums, num reasoingn though, its so unpredicble and you just have a mind blank and waste like a minute scary
-
Did they have a writing section last year? And wasn't the test online?
-
Did they have a writing section last year? And wasn't the test online?
I think they might have had writing section last year but i am not too sure, yeah the test and interviews were online for last year using webex
-
mine is at 10:15 😭😭
also true they did do writing online last year. maybe they thought it wasn't beneficial or smth? kind of sketchy man
-
do we also get no breaks in the middle? Cause the document said that we had to finish everything under 1.5 hrs??
-
mine is at 10:15 😭😭
also true they did do writing online last year. maybe they thought it wasn't beneficial or smth? kind of sketchy man
I think the reason that they didn't do writing this year is because if they made around 900 students all type up writing online it wouldn't be good and fair as some students might not be good at typing and that and probably would have prepared for handwritten essay
-
What are you guys doing currently as of test being 2 days away?
-
What are you guys doing currently as of test being 2 days away?
I'm briefly revising some maths formulas cause that's where i struggle with, but I'm actually not as stressed as i thought id be. like I'm not panicking, I'm sort of excited actually i just want it to be over at this point lolz. I'm also watching random science fun fact vids on youtube cause i heard studying like crazy before a test is bad idk
-
Tbh, I'm getting kinda excited that its almost over.
I'm also just doing some light studying now. Not really practicing much on science/numerical but I am trying to do more maths cause I need to remember a lottt of formulas ahh!
-

SAME OMG. kind of surprised how calm i am rn considering that the test is in literally 2 days. also, i heard that science and numerical is mostly graphs and interpreting information so i don't think i have to study hard for those ones. istg the second i finish my test im probably gonna overthink my results 😗
-
tbh i feel like id be anxious all the way until we get our results. like the worst part about tests is the waiting of it all
-
honestly just guess e
-
honestly just guess e
as in guess the test? howwwww id be even more anxious wtf
-
I think they might have had writing section last year but i am not too sure, yeah the test and interviews were online for last year using webex
Webex? So do we have to be in a call whilst doing the test or nah
-
Webex? So do we have to be in a call whilst doing the test or nah
No we don't have to be in a call while doing the test, what i meant was that they used Webex for the interviews last year and just did the tests online by themselves no supervision
-
i still cant believe they trust us enough to not have cameras on. like hopefully no one cheats their way into getting in but like bro this isn't an ordinary test its a literal exam how tf can one put so much faith in a bunch of 14-15 year olds 💀
-

I guess if a lot of people cheat, the interviews will be the most crucial part or something. I hope not many people cheat tho

considering how hard they made last years nossals math test cause they removed both writing components, I wouldn't be surprised if this one seemed like it was in a different language 🤷♀️

yoooo did you take the nossal test last year too? i swear i thought i was the only one who struggled with it. i literally opened up the maths test and dear lord i may as well have been reading french.

nah you not alone for sure, I put all my hopes in maths and these mfs were speaking japanese or something, didnt even know what was going on, but I see past test takers saying this test was easier than nossal so that kinda cools me down a bit, but still that nossal test gives me ptsd both the math and numerical

LMAOO but seriously all my friends we're like "oh the test was SOOO easy" i was seriously wondering if it was an inside joke because some of the shit i saw in that test paper still gives me nightmares. also i thought verbal reasoning was gonna be easy cause im actually doing okay in english but it seems like the universe had something against me. like bro i swear it was written in Shakespearean language i wanted to die on the spot

well i'm freaking out. I'm putting my faith in math. 🤞

im putting mine on science 😼
also do you think that getting one superior will get you in? in the last year's forums, peeps who got 2 superiors out of 5 tests got in so i think getting 1/3 might be good enough? idkkkk
-
does anyone know what science things would be good to revise for the test bc I'm so stuck on what to look at

well in past exams (at least what i heard), students can get in even with 1/5 superiors. considering they're cutting the test short and some students might've been better for writing. i'm sure 1/3 will get you to the interview, and then you just have to be rly good there and yea. oh im putting all my faith numerical i swear to god 😒
-

there is a lot of info on other forums like 'jmss 2021 entry' they go through science a lot. but mostly its interpreting graphs and it would be useful to brush on some science facts. here's a youtuber who talks about science facts and theories that i recommend :)

Extremely nervous - I swear I'm gonna be more anxious after the test tho ahaa

Can someone let me know if the Edutest practice tests for Maths and Numerical Reasoning are accurate and are similar to the real questions we get because I have done most and am pretty confident but Im not sure at this point
hey I once heard that the edutest numerical reasoning was similar to some questions on the test… I’m not 100% sure if that’s still true tho

I've heard that they haven't changed the Edutest practice tests in a very long time tbh, so I don't know if they'll still be accurate

Good luck to everyone on the exam, especially for those who are doing it in half an hour haha

just finished!! how did everyone go ?
-
just finished!! how did everyone go ?
How was it?
-
How was it?
science - I finished it with 5 mins left, without guessing anything. A lot of chemistry and surprisingly not many physics questions (there was like 1 if I remember correctly).
numerical - don’t want to talk about it…. (In all seriousness though, the questions weren’t that hard, they just required some time, which I didn’t have) some of the questions were absolute BS but I ended up getting through halfway with guessing a few questions.
maths - I expected it to be much harder. If you studied for this you’ll definitely do well, so don’t stress. I ended up guessing the last few questions bc I didn’t have enough time. Probably the easiest.
btw if u have any questions about the test feel free to message me or ask here :)
-
Science- I had 10 minutes remaining. I thought it was fairly simple, not too hard. You just really need to look for information well from the texts
Numerical- Too many problem-solving questions that take too long to answer, It was kinda hard but I guessed a few.
Maths- Uhm. Interesting. Not extremely hard, but I did find it to be a bit confusing. Not as bad as I was expecting tho.
Did everyone get the same test or is it different for different time slots?

Hi I’m new here and I have no idea how to use this thing :)
I did the exam a few months ago including the written components. I’m kinda disappointed because writing is my strong suit :-\
I wasn’t able to finish numerical reasoning either so dw. I lost track of time and was only able to finish a bit more than half of it.
Surprisingly, I found science reasoning to be the easiest. I also finished around 5 minutes early.
Maths didn’t go too well and I only finished 40/50 questions T-T
Since I did the exams months earlier than you guys I’ve been waiting for so long and it’s been killing me :-)

you did it a few months ago?? :o the wait must be agonising…. And you did year 10 entry right? We didn’t do writing, so maybe they won’t take your writing score into consideration. I’m sure you did well too tho, considering you got through science and most of maths. Numerical is insane and I doubt many ppl actually finished without guessing so don’t stress too much about that one test !! I’m sure you’ll get great scores :)
-
YES GUYS WE LITERALLY JUST DID THAT!!!
and I kinda understand now when those people said this test was easier than the selective one because it was.
great job guys and hopefully we all get in!!!
-
just finished mine!!
admittedly, it was a lot easier than the other selective test from last year, but i dont think i did amazing.
i finished all the questions, but i had to guess a lot because cheesus christ time went by so quickly.
science was pretty okay cause it was the one where i studied the most, but there were a few questions where i got stuck with. im kind of mad there wasn't a lot of biology on it cause it was my favourite one to revise and i was actually good at it.
maths was weird. some questions were easy asf but then the other ones looked so complicated. biggest issue was with the timing for that.
i dont even want to talk about numerical. it started off quite easy but then it progressively started getting worse. maybe my mathematic downfall was because i didnt study too much for maths and numerical, but it was pretty okay. now im anxious about results 😞

I AM SO HAPPY I FINISHED!! ;D
it wasn't as bad as i expected
i found numerical the easiest (cos i'm decent at number patterns), followed by math and science
i also had extra time for the science
GREAT JOB TO EVERYONE WHO HAS COMPETED IT!!
and all the best to those who haven't done it yet!

YEA GOOD JOB GUYS!<3
wasn't too bad;
numerical was also the easiest, patterns were so easy and it took a decent amount of time but overall it was pretty good.
science was not too bad, i had like 7 mins remaining and i found it kind of easy.
bro maths last questions were probably the hardest for me, i had to guess quite a few like 8 or 9 which is not very good but its all good. I'm relying on my numerical and science :D
BUT YEA CONGRATS GUYS! lets hope we all get the chance for an interview and do well. I'm gonna start stressing until then ;D
-
just a reminder to send in the declaration of authenticity!!
doing it right now:)) HOW DID YOU FIND THE TEST
-
does anyone know how long we have to wait for the exam results?
i am hoping it is faster than other years, as we didn't do the writing
i wish we would know the results straight away
the SuSpEnSe is gonna kill me :-\

doing it right now:)) HOW DID YOU FIND THE TEST
IT WAS PRETTY DECENT LIKE IT WASNT EXTREMELY HARD

does anyone know how long we have to wait for the exam results?
i am hoping it is faster than other years, as we didn't do the writing
i wish we would know the results straight away
the SuSpEnSe is gonna kill me :-\
UGH, SAME im kind of tempted to call them and ask but it's probably gonna come in less than a month. last year's forums results came in about 30 days but they did writing so it's definitely quicker for us. man i just want to know my results already :(
-
wait i don't mean to sound rude im just stupid but how come you did yours early? sorry i don't keep up with things aaaah
No worries! I was supposed to go on a residential program so I had to do the exam earlier than u guys
Good job to everyone who completed the exam tho!! I burnt myself out with studying, so make sure to rest well and distract yourself with other things :))

Will there be interviews or not afterwards? The email says ' Aug/Sept to arrange follow-up interviews with applicants should they be require'......
Also it says 'the outcome will be available in Term 3 or Term 4.', if 'Term 3', that's like in Aug/mid Sep?!?!
-
Wait guys that question in sr abt pressure - what did u guys put???

There were 2 compartments - one with 1l helium and another 2l nitrogen I think. They each had a pressure of 120 psi and tehy asked for overall pressure without barriers.

The pressure is already at equilibrium. The force doesn’t change, and the area doesn’t change either. It stays the same, so I put 120. :) IF THIS IS NOT RIGHT IM SORRY THIS IS WHAT I THOUGHT

Two questions that really confused me were in the science test, the question with the nutrition and you had to choose a percentage and the question about photosynthesis with the table, how did you guys go with it?

I am so sorry I have completely forgotten what the photosynthesis question was 😭 if u could remember the wording of it I might be able to help… As for the nutrition question (the one with the table) I believe for the first part of that question I answered 50%….

-
Wait guys, you know that weird question about the cone organelle and what shape it couldn't be, i was so confused?! ???
i put triangle bc it asked ab the cross section and the conical shape just could not be a triangle IF IM THINKING RATIONALLY IM NOT TOO SURE

yep if you could message me your user and then if a few others message their user that'd be good :)

I put triangle too
-
Wait guys, you know that weird question about the cone organelle and what shape it couldn't be, i was so confused?! ???
oh, I put a rectangle for that.
cos i thought a conical shape was the same as a cone,
and if you cut a cone down vertically, in the middle, there will be a triangle.
but i might be wrong...
-

Two questions that really confused me were in the science test, the question with the nutrition and you had to choose a percentage and the question about photosynthesis with the table, how did you guys go with it?
for the nutrition questions the first one i put was 50% because the person had 7/14mg of iron in their meal. and for the second question i put 100% bcs they had 25/25mg of the other vitamin (i forgot what i was called lmao) also i literally guessed the photosynthesis one dwwww
-
oh, I put a rectangle for that.

but i might be wrong...
What was the question exactly? Did it ask what it could have or what it couldn’t have been? Sorry I don’t remember the question since I did it a few months ago lol
If it’s asking what it couldn’t have been, I think rectangle should be correct. It could be a circle (if cut parallel to the base), triangle (if cut vertically), oval (if cut diagonally) but definitely not a rectangle I would think.. :-\

-
uh oh what happens if you forgot to send it in
The email said that if it wasn’t sent by 5PM, the results may not be able to be provided to the school. I would suggest you contact them ASAP and see if there’s anything u can arrange.

sorry if this is a bit of an inconvenience, but what is a residential program, and how was the test arranged for you to sit it early?
thanks
-
Finished the test this morning, for the DNA replication question, did anyone else answer the first part of the two questions the same as what was in the question?
-
sorry if this is a bit of an inconvenience, but what is a residential program, and how was the test arranged for you to sit it early?
thanks
No probs. My school runs a compulsory program where we go to New South Wales for a month and live there for a while. It was cancelled cuz of corona tho 😅
About the arrangements, it was really difficult and I had to be pretty persistent. I was given an exception because the residential program was compulsory and nothing could be done to postpone it. I basically told them that the circumstance was out of my control and they should give me a second chance 😊
-
Well if the question was something like
A C C G T T G G A
i would've put as the answer
C A A T G G T T C
And then for the rna, just replaced T with U i think.
For the rna I got really confused cause they said to replace T with u but there weren't any combinations that fit it - ended up guessing the closest one. What did you guys put?
-

OMG YEAH my answer started of as U U but then i think towards the end of the pattern i couldnt find an answer with the proper combinations- so glad im not the only one who was confused lol

Don't think we should be sharing the questions here, in all fairness, to those who may for whatever reason, take the test at a later date, OR to future students who didn't get to come across this forum.

I think it was pretty decent, don't want to jinx myself though.... :-X
How was the science tests?

most of numerical reasoning was quite straightforward, but i had to guess a few of the longer worded problems because time limit :/
the science tests i think i did alright in, but i panicked so bad during maths lol
how did everyone else go?
-
I think it was pretty decent, don't want to jinx myself though.... :-X
How was the science tests?
Numerical was honestly the hardest for me, i’m not too sure why, considering that i did pretty well in it in selectives.
The science part of the exam was easier for me - especially the science test. I was anxious about what would be included because it usually isn’t a test, but most of the content in there wasn’t even from year 10 standard.
Science reasoning was a bit more tedious with the graphs and that, but overall, I think i did decently :)

how did you go in the maths? personally the questions were wayy different than what i thought they would be and the time really messed me over :/
It was definitely overwhelming considering the amount of time given for the amount of questions to complete, but I didn't look at the time for the whole test until I was like a minute off so that I wouldn't panic and slow down.
I didnt get one chance in the 30 minutes to have a sip of water or reread a question; there were some questions that had paragraphs which you may recall. For most of these I completely skipped them and selected the good ol' reliable B and hoped for the best. I probably guessed the last like 5-10 questions because of the time.
But just remember that it really is just one out of the four tests, and the other ones can carry you. However no matter the outcome of your result, my result, or any other person's results, they do not decide who we are.
I hope that we both get to the interview stage!!

For people who haven't received an interview offer: don't give up hope!
I'm pretty sure the 2nd round of interview offers come out tomorrow.
There's definitely gonna be some people who sit the exam and receive interview offers, however don't want to actually enter the school.
-
So how many people get into the interview. My friend got in, but he gets low mark than me for science and math.

Not fully sure, but ig. But second round offers as someone already mentioned
-
Do we get intrview email in oneday
-
if you mean do you get told whether or not you made it to the interview - for us last yr it happened in 2 days ( first half got told the first day , the second half on the second day )
if you mean when the interviews are held , then no they are all on separate days ( usually sorted by last name )
hope that helps !
-
wait so if you received an email that means you pass and if you haven't received anything by tomorrow that means you failed? am I right?
okay no so what happens is that from the test results they have a form a list based on your performance. Usually the best 400 or less get picked for interviews but if someone rejects their interview offer , it gets passed on to whoever is next on the list ( this is a second round interview offer.)
-
How many from the interview actually get an offer for enrolment?

Hi are you all received interviews for Y10 right? I am waiting for Y11 interview result
-
hey i have a q
so i got through to the interview and there's two stages
I know one was a single interview and the other was a group one before covid
is it still like that or has it changed?!
-
I'm pretty sure the first one you do is group, second one is individual.
-
do you guys know when the second round offers could be coming out or if anyone has gotten one yet?
-
Will we get an email about if we got above average, superior etc soon?
We'll get it in term 4 I think - after they say whether you got through the interviews or not. You can ask them to send your results.
not too sure tho I just read from previous forums.
btw good luck for interviews guys
-
Anyone have an interview earlier than the 24th? Cause most of my friends have it on the 25th or 24th.

for the resume thing to submit, do we need to include a little summary about ourselves or would that be done in the interview? also do we need to include why we want to go to JMSS?
thankyou in advance and good luck to all that got an interview!!
-
when do they reveal the second offer emails
-
when do they reveal the second offer emails
If it is like last year, I am pretty sure they are going to send first round offer emails separated in two days (Last week Friday, this week Monday).
But if first round offers have already been sent in one day (last week Friday), I am pretty sure they are gonna send second round offer to very few people (only if someone who got the first round offer rejects interview offer then the ones on the waiting list will get the second round interview email).
Interview emails usually are sent out between 2~5pm.
-
Also is there anyone who did the entrance exam at 11 am and already received interview offer on Friday? 3 people that I know of received interview email on last Friday but none of them did the exam at 11 am (they all did it at 8 am).

NEVER edit your school report!! I heard that they are gonna double check with the principal of each school. If they don't check, then everyone would just edit their school report to be all A+. Also, when JMSS selects students they don't just look at academic achievements and marks. Prepare yourself well for the interview and if you perform well in the interview, unless you have super bad school report, you will have a high chance to get in.

my guy, you do realise that these interviewers have gone through thousands of students in their past, right? what makes you think that they won't end up catching you? and once they do, you'll get disqualified immediately it's not worth it. even if you have shitty scores, if they realise that you have a passion for science you don't even need a good report.
-
Hi so I've got the interview on the 26th and I'm kinda dying.
If anyone knows any of the basic questions that could be asked in both the one-on-one and group interviews could you please advice me?
Good Luck yall!!
-
IS the first round offer over or does it ends this friday
-
if you haven't got an email today does that mean you didn't get in?
-
Hey so I rly need help, I got an email from JMSS inviting me to the interview, and apparently I also have to write a CV/resume answering a few questions and I might be in trouble. Either way, I have a few questions:
1. How much do the reports matter? I'm in accelerated class but I've been struggling a lot especially with lockdown and my grades from the previous semester are absolutely horrid. However, on the front page it shows that I am well above/ahead for my year. I feel this is gonna be my downfall :/
2. What are some ways I can prepare for my interview?
3. Do they want me to be authentic and spicy on the resume, or does it have to be all professional to fit in for them?
4. What kind of awards and achievements should I list? Should I only put absolutely everything I can think of?
Thanks, and the best of luck to everyone!
-
So how can I sugar-coat the fact that I have had almost no leadership positions?
-
i feel like reports matter now more than ever because it could show if someone is a cheater or not by how they perform in their math/science classes at school and on the test. if someone got good marks on the test but low marks on their reports in those areas, it could be a red flag
-
if u dont get emails today does that mean i failed to go to the interview

yh im in the same situation rn, i think it means we failed but hey im not too sure

nope, second round offers will probably come out after the 19th. you have to send an email with your documents and cv before the 19th to confirm youre taking the interview offer. dont give up, giving up is never an option.

ah ok I see how it is, so its not over yet. I thought it comes today. Can you elaborate more on what I have to send in the email to them before the 19th because im slow asf
-
I im talking about the first offer. Is the first offer finished or is it still going.
-
So who has to send the documents, do u mean the person who made it to the intweview has to send the documents? im not too sure

So apparently instead of getting an interview email one of my friends got an email saying that they are still marking his exam so....
-
SO does that mean they are still marking some peopls so they have chance to get a first round offer email
-

wdym "still marking the exam"? they were all online, the second your friend submitted his exam it gets marked automatically by the edutest system. unless there was a glitch in the technology.

Yeah either this or maybe your friend doesn’t want to reveal that he didn’t get an email? This is the first time I’m hearing this.
-
Just thought I'd add to the whole report situation, as for my knowledge (gathered by friends who entered jmss last year) they do not request the reports from the schools at least if you go to a private school but instead request them directly from you. But I'd like to reiterate what was said in a previous post, jmss doesn't more so look for extremely academic students yet they look for well-rounded students with an amplitude for science so even if your report is a little rough around the edges it won't matter too much especially considering all the remote learning we all had to go through. Hope that helped ;D
-
Yeah either this or maybe your friend doesn’t want to reveal that he didn’t get an email? This is the first time I’m hearing this.
yeah that's probably the case bcs i don't think they would even send out everyone else's emails if all the exams had not been marked. it's too unprofessional they wouldn't do smth like that yikes
-
I emailed JMSS yesterday and I just received a reply:
'I am presuming that you are enquiring about entry into Year 10 in 2022. First round interview invitations were sent out last Friday, at this point in time I have not been advised about any second round interview invitations.'
So first round interview offers have already been made 😥

I don’t even think there is a second round stage for the entrance exam, I believe the second round places are going to be given for the people who did the interview and didn’t get first round.

ik this a dumb question but y'all sent the declaration of authencity on the same email you registered and got a confirmation note saying thanks for sending it by 5 right?

yeah
-
How many from the interview actually get an offer for enrolment?
more than 200 but it depends , last year a total of 225 got picked
-
I swear I've scrapping every version of my answers so much I'm running out of ideas
And quick question - how can I try stay positive when I'm speaking in the interview?
-
Just curious what questions are you using?
-
if you got an interview, dont rehearse questions to the point where uve just memorised answers. I asked a few teachers and they can tell if u do that so it puts u at a disadvantage. They dont care if u make a few mistakes or stumble over a few words (god knows ive heard some horror stories from my friends). Also, just so u know, they wont ask you ANY of the typical questions (e.g. why do u want to go to the school? etc.) i swear they chose some of the weirdest things to ask but as long as ur somewhat creative w ur answers dont worry.
-
One last thing, im sorry to say usually they give out barely any second round offers for the interviews, its more so for after the interviews ppl get second rounds. Dont wanna ruin anybodys hope but if ur spending ages thinking abt it and waiting my best advice would be to dont worry abt it bcoz unfortunately it is super unlikely.

harsh truth, but i guess i just have to accept it. thanks for the info dude

for the interview?

For the First Interview question, is the activity/event within 3 year have to be something within or outside school, it says within 3 years of your schooling but it's not that specific
-
Y'all got interview questions? They only gave me questions to include in my cv and that's it......
-

i think that's the same thing they're talking abt
-
Ohh alright, cheers. Y'all got told to do two interviews on the same day too right? Because that's what I got in the email.
-

I'm pretty sure some people have different questions to include in the cv
so.....sorry i can't help 😕
-

yeahhh i called them abt it they said it was likely two interviews but the lady wasn't too sure

Yeah for the interview

they don't mind. obviously a lil better if u have something rlly cool school related but i picked an out of school thing for that part last yr and it was fine.

I received an interview for JMSS 2022 Year 10.
What sort of things will they ask me?
How many people get an interview? (eg. 300, 400, etc.)
Any tips for getting in?
I really want to get into JMSS to work on biology next year so I'd like to know some tips :P
Thanks for any help! :)

I'm pretty sure like 400 people get an interview out of the 900-1000 people, so good job!

Hi are you all received interviews for Y10 right? I am waiting for Y11 interview result
Did you hear anything back from them, I haven't received an email saying anything.
-
Yo so I got to the interview stage and they ask for reports, but mine are absolutely horrifying. How much do they rely on the the grades on the report? Because I have a page at the front that shows that I am advanced for my grade by far. How much would it matter if it turns out I did well on the exam? Coz im fr panicking

if they ask about it you could say you had trouble over lockdown, but are willing to reflect and find ways to perform better at school and during lockdown

Hello, I was wondering, the reports and resume is due tomorrow, does anyone know the specific time to submit? because it just says the 19th

no specific time, just give it before the 20th

Idk, I go to JMSS and I don't really know anyone who got like mostly Ds and Cs and got in, but around a B or C average is usually okay? It's mostly about extracurriculars and how well you talk to the interviewer LOL

I am house captain, play for a cricket club, part of the Air Force cadets, played for a soccer club. I also have a couple of academic achievements with proof. Do you think this is enough?? Our school doesn’t have letters to represent grades, it just shows me that I am in the middle of the year 10 level for most subjects.
-
Does it matter much if I don't have a leadership role in high school or don't play music? I do play sports but only casually not competitive, and I study 2 second languages. I get great grades in school. What are the chances of me getting in?

Very high chance if you do well in the interview. CV doesn't account to much.

Ok so a few questions.
Approximately how long does the curriculum vitae have to be bc one of my friends has one that had 10 pages and mine has 2 and now I'm worrying.
Also does anyone have an idea as to how the online group interview portion will run?
And lastly should or should you not wear the school uniform?\
Thank you!

Mine is like 3 pages so don't worry, idk what ur friend was doing but that's fine too :)
we're not having a group interview this year; a few of our friends called jmss and they said it would be a hassle to do group over online, so like last year there wont be one; its one on ones but with two different people.
and also yes, we should most likely wear our school uniform,, alg
-
wait...how are you advanced for your grade, but yet still get bad grades on ur report??
I do advanced maths, so I'm doing yr 10 methods this year instead of 9.

oop well bad luck for me ig. My previous semester report are C+ and downwards, however I just checked and my report for 2020 semester 2 are Bs-As. I am in the accelerated class do you reckon I still have a chance?
-
Just found out the interviews this year is two stages. First stage is a written task during the interview, second one is having a formal interview with a panel of interviews. Y'all got told that your right??
-
Where'd you find this out. 🥲

Wait what!? A written task?? So like an essay or just taking down notes or something?
-
Yep I saw the email now. Thank you.
-
Wait what!? A written task?? So like an essay or just taking down notes or something?
Dunno, they never specified it. I'm guessing maybe it'll be reading comprehension alike?? Not sure tho just my guess.
-
Oh ok thanks anyways :D
-
need some tips on that written tasks
-
need some tips on that written tasks
Honestly not really much we can prepare for it since we dont got no clue abt what the written task actually is......
-
yeah true
-
most likely it will be what we were supposed to do in the jmss entrance exam, which they didn't include it with the math, nr and sr online because people can just hire people over to write it for them. but now we gotta turn on our cams for this so ig it's more reasonable
-
Is there anyone doing the interview before the 26th and is happy to provide some details on the written task?
-
Does anyone know what the questions in the interview will be like? Are they like general questions or more science focused? I want to try and prepare for this interview but i just don't know what to prepare for.
-
Did anyone received email from JMSS for Year 11 entry?

I know that unfortunately, they do not check if you do to a private school but I'm not too sure about public schools.

Because I know a few people who did it last year and got accepted :/. Honestly don't worry too much they don't really mind if you got a bad report as long as you do well in the interview.

pretty sure he's are going to get caught, they send an email after the interview to the school (if they got in) with all the forms you gave in and everything. Sometimes they even ask the school to stamp it with like and official stamp thing. depends tho, if he's lucky he might not have to get thoroughly checked, but if he does, there might be some pretty big consequences.

Yeah as much as it sucks, he isn't gonna get caught unless he gave himself all A's or something.

The schools won't look to verify reports and he probably won't get caught - that being said if you feel *really* strongly about it you can anonymously message the school about it
I think in general if faking reports is your approach to getting into your dream school - you'll be likely to pursue similar avenues later on in life and when you get bitten once by this your reputation is destroyed and the damage is often irreparable.
I get messaged quite often by random students wanting me to help them sit their online SACs in Year 11/12 or help people with a university assignment - often lucrative options with many willing to pay several $100s or even $1-3,000 - in my personal opinion none of this is ever worth your personal integrity (so I never accept - but I'm also sure these same people would be able to find 'help' elsewhere).
Does that mean in an era of online learning that students are ultimately disadvantaged by others who unfairly cheat and get help to get really good grades and ranks? Yes - but it will eventually bite them (or even if not it's the way you choose to live I guess)

That^^
and why would you do that? If you did do bad in your reports, there must be a reason to it and even if it is out of ur hands, they'll understand cause of covid. plus, they're your reports and so they should reflect your progress so if you are bad at a subject, it's better for them to know. Other than that, I do agree that it is unfair that some kid made it through by cheating, but as Orb said, they'll face the consequences at some point or the other anyway.

this is so true. if u rlly feel like this is unfair (which it is), no one is going to blame you for telling the school. because by doing this, they're lessening the opportunity for students (who actually study and work hard) to get in.

not bad mine went for around 20 mins, did they tell you when the results would be out?

hey guys
so as you may have read, I applied for y11 entry into jmss, and now looking at the forums, it seems as if people have done their interviews already. I haven't even received an email for my interview offer, not even a rejection letter, and im quite worried now. is there someone I could call for help or contact?? My mother has also been through all of her emails just now and cant seem to find it either. I worked really hard for this and it would be a bummer to see all of this go down the rain because of miscommunication.

I called the school, and they said something along the lines of that some people may get contacted at the start of term four, I'm not sure what this means

Uhh I'm not sure what that means either, but from what I know, everyone received their results as to whether they got an interview or not last Thursday. I believe everyone have already completed their interviews yesterday and today but there may be second round offers idk... The acceptance and rejection letters come after all the interviews have finished.
-
Hey guys! Anyone got their acceptance/rejection letter yet from JMSS? Yr10 entry btw.

Have you tried emailing the registrar and explaining your situation? When I've emailed them about any questions they were always pretty quick to respond.

So I did, and they reply really fast, but they said they had no interference with the selection process, which makes sense. I called the school and they didn’t really give me any viable information either.

Yeah yeah that makes sense, but should they not tell me I have a second round offer around this time, even though they prioritise the others first?? I spoke to my friend who is at JMSS and she told me that her friend who tried out for y10 entry had the same problem as me, and they said it was an error. However the front desk didn’t mention any of an error, and did not even ask for my information so that they could check. What should i do guys??

Hmm not sure, I hate to break it to u but the chances will be pre slim considering most ppl will be accepting the offer. It really depends on whether they'll be a few ppl declining. But ye I wish u the best of luck man and I hope u do get second round offer!!

hey guys
so as you may have read, I applied for y11 entry into jmss, and now looking at the forums, it seems as if people have done their interviews already.
I’m pretty sure I have been rejected, as per my friend who attends JMSS. They contacted a coordinator and placed it bluntly to her to which she relayed to me. Good job to those who got in!!!!
-
welp yr 11 results out. I failed the interview :'(
Did anyone get an offer?

Does anyone know someone who got in? (Year 11)
-
yep i failed the interview too (yr 11). did anyone sit the EBS exam?
-
I don’t know how I did, but I got into EBS and JMSS. I think it was just luck tbh but yeah I got in for year 11, really excited to go, if anyone else got in or is already going currently hopefully can meet you next year.
-
what are the chances of getting in second round?
there might be some spots but I think it depends on the people that reject from your school. I got into jmss but am rejecting because I decided to go to mhs but I think my spot will go to someone in my school. hopefully you get a spot but if not you can try next year:)

im in a similar situation to you, got into mac.rob and jmss but idk which one to go to. was your decision pretty obvious (like you 100% wanted to go to mhs) or did you think about it for some time??

Yeh, well I originally settled for mhs as my first priority and jmss as backup if I didn't get in. So it was pretty obvious that I accepted mhs, although I really like maths and science mhs has a lot more extracurriculars which I'm really interested in considering I do a lot of sports and other activities. So yeh jmss is closer tho but I decided to go with mhs.

I didn't get in for year 11
I didn't apply last year for year 10 but the people I know who did got in (a few of which surprised me). This gave me some confidence, so I was disappointed especially as I thought I did well in the test and written questions and had good school reports (I am already doing an accelerated program and some VCE subjects)
My interview was very short, it started very late and it was very rushed so I didn't feel I got much time to talk
Oh well, at least I know that everything I handed in was truthful and my own work....
-
I failed the interview too hopefully there will be second round offers
-
Has anyone received second round offers for jmss entry yr 11 yet?
-
Has anyone received second round offers for jmss entry yr 11 yet?
According to the rejection I received today is the closing date for acceptance of offers, so would expect it will take them at least a few days to process before they make any more offers and that offers could be as late as end October
-
So I just got an email from jmss and apparently I got in (2nd round). I'm pretty surprised and terrified. Anyone know connections for me to orientate myself into the community of jmss? Honestly, I just want a friend and I feel alone now that I'm leaving everything behind.
Edit: I'm going to be in Yr 11 in 2022 but any and all friends are welcome and desperately needed lol.

Hey everyone,
I did the entrance exam in 2021 to go to JMSS as a year 10 in 2022. I just wanted to pop onto ATAR notes and give you an overview of how it was like for me because this website helped me so much. I just want to start off by saying I was not one of those people who had a mindset that was like "I am definitely going to JMSS" so I wouldn't be able to say much about tuition etc. Also, I just wanted to point out that, yes, getting to JMSS is fairly easy (compared to Macrob and Melb High). However, this does not mean you should study any less.
I didn't pass the exam. I had one superior, one above average and one high average (people with the same score that went to more dodgy schools got in though). My friend, however, got in and she had one superior and two above averages. If you were wondering, I also did the Macrob Exam in 2020 and got three superiors and one average (didn't get selected). My friend got in with two superiors and two above averages. We only had 4 tests due to lockdown.
Back to the JMSS exam, this year, we did the test during the lockdown period so the exam was online and we did not have any essays or written tasks. People could easily cheat and it was incredibly annoying but we had no choice but to work in these conditions. We had numerical reasoning, science reasoning and mathematics for the examination. ICAS definitely helped for science reasoning. This year, we had questions that came from year 8 and 7 knowledge so make sure to revise these years. If you can read information, examine diagrams and answer questions using knowledge from the given info, then you are fine. I think all these other comments list good methods to practice so I won't repeat the info. I would also recommend doing a Henderson practice test (treat it like the real exam). James Ann is great, but for JMSS they did not give science reasoning, instead, they gave science theory which is quite useless for the JMSS test. I would say just practice basic maths that is being done at school and ICAS. Maths and numerical reasoning is not hard at all, but the numerical takes a bit of time, so get used to like recognising patterns. Mathematics is easy if you know the basics.
Another important thing is if you do not make it into the school, don't worry. I am not saying don't try, infact try as hard as you can, treat it like VCE. But, if you don't, no stress. Think of the positives. I, myself regret not trying harder for the exam but remember some people reject offers to JMSS even after getting in. When going to those schools with high standards, it gets really stressful and its harder to get opportunities. Although JMSS does have a blazer, in ways not passing the exam is a positive.
Wishing you guys all the best :)
Please do contact me for any questions

thanks for this, I also sat the test this year and I got 3 superiors and above average (the above average was the science writing which is only taken for people that had made it into the interviews idk why they did it this way). Following up, yes Jac was completely useless for the JMSS test because the science is theory not reasoning and because the maths and nr was easy. the writing did help, because I got taught the correct structure and stuff like that in a prac report. Just find some ICAS for the science reasoning and for maths and nr you could probably to the stuff the same as the other selective schools (it is all run by edutest so tests will have same concepts).
Its not the end of the world if u don't get in there's always, I failed last year and this year I got into jmss and mhs, however I'm rejected the offer cos I chose mhs.

Hello,
Thanks for the guides in effectuating the interview, but I just wanna know if you or anyone else reading this message know the (EXACT QUESTIONS) for the interview since I'm doing it this year.
Thanks
-
OMG THANKYOU THIS HELPED A LOT, especially since u went into so much detail
is it enough time if i start studing today? because idk when the exam is and i havent even registered for admission cuz the websites acting up for me
anyways, thanks for the advice and tips!
have a happy new year :))
Have you had experience with the selective exam? If you have, it is apparently quite a good indicator of how you may do (although the selective exam is harder.)
6 months is quite some time to prepare, so you should be fine if you study often.
If you have a somewhat clear understanding of year 9 and maybe year 10 concepts by the exam, you should be fine!
edit: I realise how late I was lmao

- Pick a word and explain what you think of when hearing that word between science/scientist and invention/discovery?
I know this is a year old but I was kinda confused by this part...
Did you mean that they ask us to pick a word (with the options being science, scientist, invention or discovery) and explain what we think when hearing the word?
sorry lol just confused
