Ahhh, I know I'm a bit early ( or not lol). Anyways I'm doing the exam next year in June, if anyone else is or if anyone has tips or suggestions please feel free to help out!! :D :)
-
I'd suggest having a good trawl through some of the selective school admissions forums, lots of advice and tips from past/current students =)
-
have you had a look at this and this thread? Might be helpful!
Other links online with advice include this and this.

Don't overwhelm yourself. Plan out what you're going to do from August or September to prepare for the Macrob Test. For every sort of test (writing, numerical&verbal reasoning, maths, science and etc.) you have to complete, allocate time to enhance your problem solving and critical thinking skills. Do 1-3 extended response maths questions a day. Read news from major outlets, read books from authors who have passed away years ago. If you don't get in, don't doubt your abilities. Take it as an experience to enrich you. To diverge you into becoming more than just a Macrob student.

Hey, I did the exam this year, I still don’t know if I got into Mac.Rob yet but I suggest really building up your vocabulary and spelling as it helps in verbal, reading and writing. Some ways to that would be to read lots of books that challenge you and you find interesting, look at year 10-12 spelling lists on the internet and just try to learn new words everyday.

hey!
the essay writing when i did it was just 15 minutes for one, but i think (correct me if i am wrong) it has changed to 30 minutes and only one essay. if you wanted to get a headstart on preparing it might be a good idea to practise writing an essay a few times a week, and getting someone to give you feedback, just to get into the habit of writing under time pressure.
look through the year 9 maths textbook, and familiarise yourself with the content.
i would also suggest doing maybe one hendersons mock exam, which i found was very helpful in consolidating weaknesses and strengths, although if you opt for this do it closer to the actual exam next year.
i would say more than just studying, immerse yourself in many extracurriculars and leadership opportunities, as selective schools often looks for well rounded students if it comes to the interview process.
good luck! it's great that you have started prep so early, but keep in mind that the selective schools are just that, schools. at the end of the day they have their own pros and cons and it really really is not a gateway to a perfect atar of your dreams. regardless of what school you go to, anything you want to achieve is possible.
feel free to ask any more questions! ;)

hi, yes i did try out and was successful in getting a place at macrob!
for persuasive: basically i think i just did intro, 3 body paragraphs and a conclusion, just your ordinary structure. but one of the body paragraphs i wrote was a rebuttal of the other side, which is completely up to you if you want to include.
for creative: basically any structure works, but you need to have a concrete plot, instead of just writing poetry or something, as all the prompts are clear and specific. with creative, i found it helped to have a few storylines i was comfortable writing that i could adapt for any prompt.
hope that helps! feel free to pm me for more details about the exam or anything :)

hey i have a thread about this since i go to macrob already but i can tell you what i did for preparation:
- read a variety of novels and newspapers
- did a lot of james an practice papers (im pretty sure you can buy some off of here?)
- did year 9 and year 10 maths
- timed myself with tests id make for myself
pm me if you have anymore questions <33

Does anyone know if it is analytical or persuasive and if so what is the difference?
Because I was trying to book for Henderson practise tests and tuition!

No, you won't know if it is going to be analytical or creative prior to the exam. You will find out when you are about to start the writing part of the exam.
However, this year it was creative :)

Hi! I'm doing the test as well. Do u know if its gonna be online because of covid-19?
-
Hi, I did the test in 2017 and went to a super competitive school where I got 4 superiors (the minimum to get into MacRob at my school). I think the biggest factor that helped me get in was going to James An College. We were given the four tests per fortnight and did writing every week, and we would go through the solutions right after the test. I highly recommend going as most of my friends who got in also went to James An College. That being said, you don't need to go, and some of my friends got the same mark as me without going, and some who went didn't get in.
All the best!!

Does anyone have any advice for the exam? Also if you went to JAC, What kind if results did you get on the practice tests? How similar were JAC tests to the exam tests?
Thanks

Also, don’t compare the results. Be more focused on beating your competition. Again aim for top 5. Results are similar, and the actual test is only slightly harder. The big mock exam from jac which you will have in March next year, is very hard. If you get a few superiors in that, you have an extreme good chance of getting in.

Advice for the exams
1. Spend a maximum of 30 seconds for each question. If you still don't know the answer flag it, skip it, and come back after
2. Know which questions to skip. In maths and numerical reasoning, I skipped the questions with the long passages and instead came back to them in the end. If you spend like a minute reading the passage and not know how to answer them, that's a waste of more than a minute.
3. If you get halfway through the exam and feel a bit hopeless because in the worst case scenario you keep skipping questions, flip to the end questions and do those. Usually the easier questions are at the start and end, and they put the harder ones in the middle to slow down students
4. With writing, always allocate at least 2 minutes for planning. You want to visualise a structure for your essay before you start writing because if you get stuck halfway then it can be game over for you.
5. For writing, make sure to remember the basics such as punctuation, grammar, polished vocabulary, etc. To build these skills READ.
6. For mathematics, the curriculum mostly covers Year 8-9. It would be great if you could learn linear equations, speed&distance&time questions, money, trigonometry, volume and area, and other Year 8/9 topics.
7. Make sure to have a good sleep, eat healthy, DRINK A LOT OF WATER BETWEEN THE EXAMS.
Results in JAC
My first tests for each topic I got really really bad. Like 30% in verbal and mathematics, and 60% in numerical and reading comprehension. It was mostly due to the fact that the timing is really bad for edutest and I hadn't covered much of the content. After a few weeks of asking a lot of questions in class, analysing patterns, and fixing my weaknesses my results spiked to superiors for the next 8 months. Keep in mind that I went to an accelerated program so I didn't need to study much outside of school as much of the maths and writing was covered at school. JAC doesn't let you take the tests home but the week after each test, JAC would give these sheets with each question number, what topic that question was, how many students got it right, and if you got that right. The best way to improve is to analyse a couple of weeks' worth of those sheets, find a pattern for your weaknesses and work on them. Khanacademy is great for this and has a lot of videos for mathematics. If writing is your weakness then search prompts up and write them, and then ask your JAC English teacher or your school English teacher for feedback. The practice papers at JAC should be enough for you to get the hang of timing but it's good for you to be able to identify questions you should probably skip. I always skipped the money questions and the questions with a large amount of writing.
How similar were JAC tests to the exam tests?
Very accurate. In fact, I think some of the tests they give are harder versions. As in the same topics are in the practice tests but they give harder versions. I don't think any other testing centre is that accurate, especially Henderson's. I went to their exam and it was REALLY easy, way easier than the actual exam. I got 5 superiors and 1 above average on the Henderson's exam as opposed to 4 superiors and 2 high averages (ugh, writing) on the real one. However, I still recommend you go to one of their trial exams as it gives you the experience of the testing conditions.
The biggest tip I'd give you is use those sheets that JAC gives you every week. Almost no one does but it's the best way for your results to sky rocket.
All the best! With hard and smart work you'll get in for sure!!

I don't know. That's what my mum thinks though!

Same, my tutor teacher thinks it will be online too. I'm so worried for the test, my sister was successful and got a place in Suazzane so I'm super worried the consequences of me failing. Right now I'm keeping my head high and hoping for the best. I wish you good luck for the test.

Dont worry I'm sure you'll do just fine!! I'm just honestly worried about the fact that the superior score might be higher this year if the test is online coz theres a chance people might cheat. 🤷♀️

same, I think people might cheat. The thing is though if people feel like they need to cheat then why are they doing this test. People applying for year 10 are doing it online. I think they have to keep their camera's on and the screen probably locks to the test.

I heard from Years 9's who applied for a spot in a Year 10 selective school that the EduTest people will have your IP address and be able to trace the search history of all the devices under that IP address. But sadly it still doesn't stop others from using calculators.

I feel like they should just get people to do the test at their school and send a recording

Or they could have students complete the test at their local library and have the librarians look out for cheaters.

yeah, I don't trust people to not cheat

Yeah exactly, I think either libraries or doing the test at school would be a great way to make sure no one cheats but I highly doubt that we'd be allowed to because of the extended lockdown.

Yeah definitely but like it'd be hard to do it online coz like nearly 4,000 people r doing it and there's gonna be some sort of I.T problem and you can't keep track of everyone's camera and surrounding. Idk tho 🤷♀️

Even if we did end up doing the test at the Showgrounds, we would probably have a two week quarantine because there'd be some kid who gets covid-19
-
I really don't want to do the test online. It seems there are many ways to cheat and I can't trust people, my internet also sometimes drops out as well. I get headaches after reading or being on screen for a long time too.

I agree, its definitely a risk coz people will have the opportunity to cheat and I guess it would be deemed unfair to those who don't cheat and actually try their hardest but don't get an offer from a school because of those who cheated.

I hate doing tests online, I can't concentrate.

Same, btw do u think to get into Macrob you'll need like atleast 3 superiors out of 5
-
I have a question:
Why did everyone decide to apply to a selective school?
(I wanted to go to a more academically focused school, my mum also encouraged me)
-

probably, I'm hoping to get three because it gives a fairly good chance

That's my reason as well, Macrob has great VCE results and because I wanna focus on Science as a core subject for VCE my parents recommended I try out for selective.
-

Have you done practice tests, like I've done a few but idk what scores mean superior and above average and etc.
-

Yes, I've done quite a few
Henderson's tests are a lot easier than the real test I think.
If you do JAC the teacher's have told us those are slightly harder than the real test, the top category is a superior
I guess aim for like at least 85% ish
There are some tests where the superior score is higher than others.
The superiors depend on how well the rest of the people score
-
Does anyone have the link for the selective server on discord ??
-
I've done quite a few practice tests from James An. The practice tests are hard and I rarely score higher than 60%/70%. I really want to get into Suazzane Cory though!

I went to JAC at the start but couldnt het more than 50% lol but I quit and joined a different tutoring. Do you think getting say 35/50 and 42/60 would be enough to get atleast an Above Average. And good luck with that I'm sure you'll so great I'm hoping to get into Macrob 😁

I think it depends how the other students at your school that also applied performs. My sister got into Suazzane with an average and not 1 superior because her school didn't have many students that performed well.

Ahh okok theres only 2 people at my school doing the test including me, my parents say that the test will probably be still conducted at the show grounds but we'll have to get our temperature checked and our parents arent allowed in and stuff.
-
Hopefully it will still be at the showgrounds. But how many students are in your Year 8 Cohort? The selective schools can only take a maximum of 5% of your Year 8 Cohort.

I think I'm the only person doing the test in my year

I have about 150-170ish students in my cohort and from what I know of, 5 are applying from my school.
-
If you went to a school that had like 10 students and you were the only one applying you wouldn't be subject to the 5 percent rule
-
At the moment, I'm just hoping that the test will still be at the showgrounds, just to ensure that everybody has the same level playing field. We apparently will be getting updates on the the 14th, 5 days before the exam.

I suck at creatives in short amounts of time, persuasive I'm fine at. My mind is too jumbled for creatives. Hoping it's persuasive
-
Same, sometimes I forget what I was planning to write then my story just strays from the main plot. I am hoping for persuasive too. Do you know if we do get persuasive, will we get statistics to use as evidence in our essay?

We probably won't get many statistics but, there might be one from each side

the practice persuasive on the official website has a quote from one side and statistics from the other

When I did practice exams I usually got a small paragraph on the topic and then the topic sentence. Idk it that'll happen in the actual exam tho. Is everyone on this forum trying out for either Macrob or Suzanne?

You won't be a disappointment. The only person this should effect is you. It shouldn't matter to your parents or your tutor. Getting in doesn't make you any more intelligent than not getting in. Some people guess all the answers and get in. Unlikely, but it happens. Just don't consider your self a disappointment based on one exam and an application for one school.

Hi everybody!
In light of the Premier’s announcements on Sunday the 6th of September, the exam will be postponed, confirmation of the postponed details will be sent only to registered email addresses, and I will also keep you all updated through this thread. I don't have specific details now. All I currently know is that the examination will be postponed.
Suzanne Cory, a school who is apart of the selective entry high school network has made a post on their facebook page explaining that the exam is going to be postponed again.
Here is the post for convenience:
Due to the announcements yesterday in regards to the extended Stage 4 restrictions currently in place in Metro Melbourne, the examination date will need to be postponed to a later date.
The Selective Entry Network, consisting of all four Victorian Selective Entry High Schools are currently being guided by The Department for the next steps moving forward.
Thank you again for your patience as we are guided through this unique situation.
Stay safe!

Good luck to everyone sitting the exam!
What tutoring do you guys go to now? I go to James An btw, applying for MHS.

Suzanne Cory, a school who is apart of the selective entry high school network has made a post on their facebook page explaining that the exam is going to be postponed again.
Here is the post for convenience:
Good luck to everyone sitting the exam!
What tutoring do you guys go to now? I go to James An btw, applying for MHS.

Hey, thank you for this update. It really sucks to hear because now the stress will continue to burn.
-
what the hell? So it's being postponed. This is sad
-
I'm hoping this is just a joke
-
Hey, thank you for this update. It really sucks to hear because now the stress will continue to burn.
Yeah, I think it makes sense, but it also have some negative connotations as well. Infact, they conducted online testing with the Year 10 entrance exams, and due to the restricting time frame to select students they cancelled the essay componentand students were asked to submit a personal statement outlining the reasons for them wanting to attend a selective school to the school itself.
However, we will probably not have to write a personal statement as the selection for year 10 entry is at the principals discretion and isn't governered by the department of education, like the year 9 entrance is. But there is a possibility of the writing examination being cancelled, which isn't good at all and it'll make the whole thing 20% more competitive.
But anyways guys, lets not worry about what will happen with the examination. It's the Selective Entrys units job to worry about what will happen.
However, I will also like to say, when you hear information about the examination details make sure its from official sources. There do exist people who would be willing to create such documents to hurt or mislead others and give them the false hope/information as a result of it.
Anything posted on this website or sent form this email [email protected] can be seen as official and confirmed. As well as the schools who are apart of the Victorian Selective Entry High Schools networks' websites.

You can find the information on Suzanne Cory's Facebook page.

it's weird because, it's only on the Suzanne Cory Facebook and not on any of the other school's facebooks. It's not on Suzanne Cory's instagram either. This may or not be me in denial

Same though, I'm pretending it's someone who's salty about the fact they might not get in and therefore decided to trick people to make it easier for them to get in.

I want to get the exams over and one with and out of my way. I just don't the exams to resort to online because then people will have advantages and many will be disadvantaged.

Yeah same no one else has said anything

It might be a scam
-
I think Suzanne Corey's post may be a scam for the following reasons:
1. It's the only school posting about this
2. It's not on their instagram
3. The education department hasn't said anything
4. That I know of no one has been emailed
5. It would be quite easy to hack the Facebook server and it wouldn't be that hard to make the post look professional and in a Suzanne Corey format as it has previously been used.
6. It seems a bit weird
7. Wouldn't there have been a more formal announcement
8. It should say something on the website
9. It's not an official announcement
If anyone finds any information please reply
-
Oh wow yeah that's true but if it was a scam they would've deleted it by now wouldn't they?
If someone hacked it's likely they changed the password

If their Facebook got hacked my sister would've known because she goes to Suazzane. But I would still continue to study because this hasn't been confirmed by the other Selective schools or the department.

Hi,
I am going to say this in the nicest way possible guys but why do you come up with theories. A selective school has posted it. I bet if MHS or Macrob posted this you would have concluded this is real. Don't jump to conclusions and focus on studying for your upcoming test instead of formulating ridiculous theories. Your applying for the wrong school, if you want to be a theoretical physicist go to JMSS.
Sincerely, MAN0033

Yeah I go to a private tutor

Guys, your parents would've probably just received an email from the department. The exam has been delayed and you can request for a refund and withdraw from the exam.

Pretty good, I usually get around 80-85% on the tests so I'm coping well I think

Do you know what percentage ranks as a high average, above average or superior?

It depends on how well everyone else does. If the average score was 60 percent and you got 60 percent you would be average. You can't really determine if you'll get in or not, because everyone else's score effects yours.
I think superior is like top 10%
Above is the 10% below
And High is the section below that

To safely score a superior in the actual exam I recommend 90%+ every week :D

Is it just me though, or has JAC been slack with there simulation exams lately?
Too many typos imo.

Yep, like 2 weeks ago the practice test had these yellow sticky notes on them that would give you the answer. Are you applying for year 9 entry?

Yea I'm applying for MHS Year 9 entry. There was also a few typos in this weeks maths as well.

Good luck on the exam and it is really infuriating with the typos. I'm applying for Suzanne Cory.

and sometimes they get things wrong, like they won't have a single right answer,
This week I knew I was right because it was a simple equation and they had no right answer so then I used a calculator and there was no right answer

Yeah I remember that lmao. Perhaps we should move this discussion to Casual chat so we don't over fill the recent posts board.

Is this the TT Edu exams and also under timed test conditions? If so that is quite impressive. I've seen those exams as I have a younger sibling sitting the exam next year. They are not easy and have some bizarre questions at the year 10-12 level for things like Math...

I time myself and when we had on location tutoring they used to time us, the topics became gradually harder and the times became shorter so we used to get 5 minute extensions (not sure if other people had this)!

The test dates been decided!

It's not the end of your life.
If you are academic, you will do really well at any school iMO. The school won't define you.
Are your parents ok or r they pissed/upset?

They’re pissed. And upset. I’m gonna try out for yr 10 nxt yr and they’re refusing to send me for tuition. So that’s going grEat.

Hey,
First of all, its ok to feel upset. I understand you're disappointed, and so are your parents. But it's important to remember that even though you're not able to get into macrob this year, it's not the end of your academic career. There have been many people from non-select entry public schools who have scored 99+, and honestly, even if you end up attending macrob, you can't guarantee that you will necessarily do very well (have seen cases where people who did better than me in the select entry exam get a much lower ATAR in the end).
I think your parents may have a good reason not to pay for your tuition. If your current school's decent and there are a few dedicated teachers, if you stay at your current school and work hard, there will be teachers who go above and beyond and help you to achieve the best academically. On the other hand, being an ex select entry student myself, I've had some of the worst teachers I've ever encountered, and had to rely on a lot of self-study to push through. That saying, I did not attend Macrob, so teachers there might be quite different. But I just wanted to let you know that it's not the end all be all, and you can still do really well even if you don't get in.
