Hi,
I am trying out for year 10 nossal and could someone please explain how it going to be different from the year 9 exam, how many people get shortlisted and usually how many get in, plus the coronavirus is going on so do you know how the exams may differ from usual? I also want to put Melbourne High as a second preference because it takes a minimum of 28 students but if I put it as second preference will I still have a chance to get shortlisted? Thanks.
-
I did year 10 entry (didn't get in.)
The principal says that if you get top 5 there's a high chance you'd get an offer, if you're in top 10 there's a smaller chance and if you're outside of top 10, then it's unlikely. However even if you get top 5 you still may not get an offer as it depends on whether current students move school, interstate etc.
No one knows how exams will run this year unfortunately, the situation is rapidly changing so it's too early to tell.
All the schools you apply to will use the same test, so that means you'll sit it once at one of the SEHS that you have applied for. I don't believe there was a preference system in Year 10 though, and I'm pretty sure that even if there was a preference system, your chances of getting into MHS wouldn't change.

Hi,
My friend wrote the test for Nossal last year. Out of two people he was the only one to make NHS. He got 4 superiors and one high. That to he got the offer at the last minute.
-
There are no preferences for Year 10 entry. You need to apply to each school! Preferences are only given for Year 9.

Approximately how many students try out for the NHS year 10 exam?

How many kids tried out? and If you dont mind me asking what score did you get that was not accepted in top 10?

I lost the paper that was mailed out but I believe 2 superiors, 2 high averages, and 1 above average, just don't remember what subjects exactly. Around 100 or so tried out, it filled 3/4 of their gym

Ahh unlucky, I just wanted to ask. how do you submit the Melbourne High application as well? Like do have to go to their school or will they collect the applications at the Nossal test.

Not 100% sure but the form says to submit it when you take the Year 10 test in June, but if you're sitting it somewhere else (NHS, SCHS), then your best bet is to ask or just sit it at MHS

I did both the Melbourne High and Nossal Test last year. Failed to get into both, with getting 3 superiors and 2 above averages. So you really should aim for 5 superiors or 4 superiors and an above average.
As for submitting the application for Melbourne High, my dad directly gave the application to Melbourne High last year. (as he works in the city) aprroximately a week before the exam, I wrote the exam in the Nossal High School gymnasium.

Year 10 exam is gonna be different from all other years, you must be at a year 11 level if not higher. There is not that many students who try out in year 10 at Nossal (a lot of people don't try out for a selective school for year 10 unless it is JMSS/EBS). You will have a chance to get shortlisted at any of the schools as long as it is on the list. I tried out for Nossal back then to and my friends did, so good luck. Also try to aim to be the top couple of students.

Hfhfgdjt I’ve only started studying for the exam in August. How hard is the exam and what type of things should I be studying to prepare? Also wondering if I somehow get an interview, is being part of mini Vinnies, student action team, environmentalist team, past house captains and volunteering out if school enough extra curricular activities. I don’t do any sports and I don’t really have a way to prove that I am part of the student action team or environmentalist team.

does anyone know when the test will be? Due to the new lock down orders in place
-
The test for MHS is online.
-
Dont know how helpful this is but I did the mhs/nossel test and didnt get in, got 2 sups and all other are high/ab av. However I didnt apply for nossel because im dumb and got rejected from mhs. I think the application part will play a big role compared to the year 9 entry.
Btw anyone here applying to nossel for year 11 entry?
-
Hi,
I am trying for MHS year 10 entry. Any tips for reading as I am poor at this.
-
Hey, I go to Nossal and got through for Year 9 (did the test in 2018). Last year in my cohort, around 5 people left the school, and I think 4 or 5 new people are in school now. It really depends on how many people leave cos if no one leaves then it doesn't matter if you do the test or not.
-
how many people do you reckon are leaving this year?
-
in your cohort (i am doing the year 11 entry)
-
in your cohort (i am doing the year 11 entry)
Well, it's hard to tell with the current situation. The way most people left last year was kids who had Melbourne High/MacRob as their number one preference but only got in for Nossal. I know heaps of people who travel from the other side of the city to come to school every day. Obviously try out, but yea depends on the number of people that leave. :)
-
The year 10/11 enrollment for Macrob has been cancelled. So this year, I guess it would only be Melbourne High, which in Year 11, they only accept Arts and Humanities students, decreasing the number of students leaving Nossal even further.
However there is still bound to be at least 1 or 2 people that leave the school. (hopefully haha)
-
How many questions are on each exam and what are they based on ?
-
The test for MHS is online.
I saw that, but I thought we would do it at MHS but just on laptops or tablets or something. If we do it online it would be very sketchy.
-
Anyone know what type of questions might be on the exam?
What topics are on the maths and verbal reasoning exam?
-
When are the results coming out for Nossal in to. year 10 entry?
-
does anyone know when the test will be? Due to the new lock down orders in place
was wondering the same thing
-
Hi,
The test was conducted on August 8th.
-
jmss, mhs and schs have came out. Any idea on when ours will haha?
-
Any updates?
-
Apparently Nossal has been preparing to mail out the letters and results this week, so hopefully we should receive them sometime next week.
-
Oh O.K.
Hopefully they make offers.
How do you know that, did you call the school?
-
I emailed the school last week and Mr Page the principal replied to me.
-
what did her say?
-
He said we should receive letters and results hopefully next week depending how well the Aust Post is operating.
-
I'm not sure if this is good or bad getting a letter...don't they normally email to the students they would like to interview?
-
no they gave letters last year (im doing yr 11 entry). I think for year 10 and 11 entry in nossal they give letters. Also btw in nossal they won't say if you got an interview, they'll just say if you are in the top 10 or 5. Then they will create a waiting list and conduct based on the number of people leaving :)
If you are in the top 5 (for yr 10 entry) you're basically almost guaranteed a spot. However if you are in top 10 its possible but unlikely. Outside top 10, its basically impossible to get in.
-
Oh I see. Thank you for the info. :)
-
next week as in this week (now). Is that when the results are coming? Any day between tomorrow and friday? I'm confused haha.
-
Yes, that's what he said but it depends on Aust Post as they are delivering mail every second day only so we'll just have to wait.
-
so it should come today or tomorrow
-
So nervous. Hope it’s positive news for everyone.
-
nope not today either (at least it didn't come in mail yet). Anyone else?
-

Same for me, nothing.
-
Nothing...
-
my mailbox is literally empty. Are you sure its coming this week?
-
Do they send any emails at all??
-
Dear xxx,
The office is currently preparing to mail out the letters and results – you should receive them sometime next week (depending on how well the post office is operating)

This was sent to me on 2 Sept.
I think it is the Australia Post problem, they are struggling to deliver mail at the moment.
We just have to be patient.
-
ahh. I thought they already sent it when you emailed. But it said they are preparing.
So this email was last Wednesday. They probably sent it on Thursday or Friday (maybe even this monday).
It will probably come from today to friday or maybe even early next week.
-
Below is the reply I have received today from Nossal regarding my enquiry sent 2 weeks ago. :(
"My sincere apologies for the delay in responding to your enquiry.
The top 3 students from this year’s examination have been notified by email. If you have not received the email you are outside the top three. All test results and ranking indications were mailed out on Thursday 9th September. At this stage there is nothing more for you to do. As soon as he is notified of vacancies, Mr Page will contact applicants in order of rank to offer places. At this stage we are aware of 2 vacancies into Year 10 and one into Year 11 for 2021
All the best,
Tracey"
-
So when are the results coming out?
-
So according to the reply I received today. They have already sent out emails to the top 3. If you have not received anything by now, then that means you're outside top 3. All results and the ranking details were sent yesterday by mail.
There are only 2 vacancies in Y10 and 1 in Y11.
-
Did you get a reply
-
I wonder if that means they just offer a place without an interview.
Well at least we tried :(
-
Also for those of you in YEAR 10 next year. Don't lose hope you don't have to be in top 3 to get in. You can be in top 5 and still get in a chance.
As for me since I am going into year 11, there probably isn't any hope as I need to be in the top 3. Oh well I tried ;D
-
Also they said at THIS STAGE they are aware of 2 vacancies for year 10. Obviously as the year goes on, there will be more vacanies. From what I know there will be at LEAST 5 vacancies for year 10. So don't lose hope :).
Trust me I did this last year :)
-
Also Thursday 9th or Wednesday 9th?
-
just got the mail, didnt make the top 3. RIP :(
-
What did you get bro? I am sure you did well.
-
are we all supposed to get something today?
-
I already got emails from MHS, I didn't try for Nossal this year. However, Tommy tried for year 11 and he got an email saying he was outside the top 3.
-
When are the year 10 results coming for 2021
-
Not sure. Maybe today I think.
-
didn't get an email. No email for nossal, just a letter in the post.
-
Emails were sent out only to the top 3.
Actual letter and results were sent by post to everyone outside the top 3.
I didn't receive email and am still waiting for the letter.
So have you got yours already Tommy?
-
Well at least we all tried.
-
yep already got mine.
-
Did you get your scores as well??
-
if you are in year 9, you don't need to be in top 3. Most of the time around 5-6 people leave in year 9, don't worry you will pass if you are in top 5 :) (top 10 is possible but unlikely). So don't worry, you guys still have hope.
Just cross your fingers for the top 5.
-
How many years is this going to take?
-
it already came out for some people
-
how did u guys go? anyone got top 5 or 10??
-
Did you get a place into nossal? I didn’t write the test for nossal this year but for Mhs I did. How did everyone go??? What did you guys get???
-
I am in Year 10 at Nossal and I'm just interested on how many people are going in for Year 11. DId anyone here get it?
