Title: bio 3/4 without the 1/2? (selections coming up)
Post by: twinklehello on July 04, 2022, 11:41:06 pm
Hi guys!
I'm currently in yr 11 and I want to go into medicine in the future, right now I'm doing Lit, but not enjoying it that much. I'm also doing English so If I drop lit I still have English.
I want to do bio 3/4 for next year, and drop Lit. However, I'm scared I might fall behind or just not be able to grasp or fully understand the concepts since I haven't done bio since yr 10 science. Can anyone give some input, I'm very indecisive right now about the whole thing. Any feedback or comment will help!

Hey!

Unfortunately I can only offer advice based on last year's study design (i have no idea if things are different now - so I'd strongly suggest asking your teachers). But for the old study design: 1/2 bio only slightly overlapped with 3/4 - and the bits that did we mostly covered either in y10 science - or we re-did them in 3/4.

Personally, I didn't do the 1/2 at all. But I did put a lot of work in during the holidays - trying to get a head start. (We used the edrolo textbook too - which made the teacher mostly irrelevant).

Somewhat stupidly - I let dad talk me into reading a chapter or two of his old uni textbook - which was well and truely overkill - but did overlap with Chemistry and physics a bit.

If u do end up doing bio: strongly suggest listening to Andrew Douch's podcast ("Douchy's biology").

Anyway, Good luck with whatever you decide!
:)

Try jumping into some bio content now (look at the study design for guidance on what, there are a whole bunch of videos on the internet that can help you here, and I did also listen to bits of that podcast when I was studying bio - it's a good resource)

Bio 34 is a subject that can reasonably be done without 12 imo but you will help yourself if you jump into the content early. Keep in mind that a lot of medicine pathways also wouldn't require you to study VCE biology right now.

Good luck with your choice!

That seems like a good idea, I think I will do bio 3/4 but do some catch up

I arranged a meet up with my chem teacher who also teaches bio 3/4 to see her opinions on it. Thank you!

I would say don't do bio at all!! trust me it is not worth it.. don't get me wrong the content is interesting but it is not worth doing bc the teachers are super strict and they literally take sooooo many marks off for small things.. Plus bio doesn't scale up so why bother doing it.. Personally, I also want to do med but bio isn't even a pre-req so don't know why I bothered myself with it..  My friend did bio 3/4 last year and she had an average of 85% but ended up with 30SS, not trying to discourage you but you would have to work very hard if you want a SS of +40. At the end its your choice, do it if you think you can handle the harsh marking and being extra careful with every word you use.
