Hi pin duck i recently got accepted into Jmss and ill be making a guide soon on how to study for the exam .
But in the mean time heres another great guide made by my good mate Indefatigable lover A Year 9's guide to the John Monash Science School Test.
You can also find practice material for the test over here http://www.education.vic.gov.au/school/parents/secondary/pages/practicetests.aspx?Redirect=1.
Hope that helps and if you have any other questions feel free to PM me

Hey Pinduck,

Have a look at the following links ---> A guide on how to  to study for the John Monash Science School exam
A Year 9's guide to the John Monash Science School Test

Looking at my own perspective at the JMSS exam, I personally found the mathematics parts rather easier than the science parts. I recommend you go through your year 9 textbook for the Mathematics. For the numerical reasoning try a couple of AMC tests.
Cover these topics in maths:
- Linear Algebra
- Interpretations of graphs
- Surds
- Indices
- Decimals
- Trigonometry
- Fractions
- Percentages

Complete the Chapter reviews of your book as well.

Science reasoning complete past ICAS exams, there are a couple of practise ones on the site, http://www.eaa.unsw.edu.au/icas/preparation

For the science essays I strongly recommend http://www.bbc.co.uk/bitesize/ks3/science/ It's short, informative, comes to the point and a great way to learning the basics.

Good luck for next year! ;D PM if you have more questions :)

Thank You for your responses,

For the Math exams, would the topics covered be in the Year 9 or Year 10 Curriculum?

I understand that it may consist of a bit of both but I would like to know whether or not I need to go over the Year 10 curriculum thoroughly.

Thanks Again!  :)

I think the topics covered are late year 9 early year 10 topics .
So i'd say it be beneficial to go through the year 10 book

I would suggest you familiarize yourself with the year 9 curriculum first, if you can grasp onto those concepts and still have enough time, surely head onto the year 10 book as well. But keep your highest priority for Maths as covering the year 9 standard before year 10 :)

I second Butterscotch. It is very vital for you to have the Year 9 curriculum "under the belt" for the mathematics section of the exam. The numerical reasoning test this year, I found easy, as nearly all of it consisted of number patterns. The science section is basically a mixture of luck and general knowledge. So, before the exam, revise over your Year 9 science textbook, and maybe a bit of the Year 10 science curriculum. If you are thinking of undertaking tutoring for the exam, I highly suggest these two tutors (I personally went to them, and found them to teach material a lot similar to the exam format :D ) ;

- http://www.brainworks.com.au/students/john_monash_science_school

Although they are quite pricey, they are really worth the money (especially brainworks, BEST TUTOR EVER :DDD )

PM me, for more questions, especially about the tutors :D

nicely said Undeadeast 15 just one thing to add from what you said .
You might also want to go throught your year 8 textbook especially for the science part of the exam . Since you might get an essay topic on a topic you studied last year .
Pm me if you have anymore questions.

Do what everyone above mentions and you'll be fine :D I see that you attend Mount Waverly, which might be a bit more competitive than other schools. However, if you know your maths and understand science, you'll be fine.

I would disagree. I think most of the stuff in the test would fall under year nine maths and year nine advanced maths. Surds where the only thing that really stood out as year ten maths.

REVISE year eight  and nine science. The writing topics will not be anything extreme like year ten science. Revise all the concepts in year eight science and year nine science and you should cope. If you have time then skim through year ten science. Also, try to get a broader knowledge of science by researching deeper into certain fields! The exam markers will be impressed if you could name the scientist behind the concept as well as the concept!

Hello everyone!
I am currently a Year 9 student and would love to get some insight on the JMSS test. Firstly, I found this thing called Hannibal's Guide. It had multiple which were needed to know for the test but I would love to know if each and everyone is a must-know for the test. Also where could you get practice tests from?

Hannibal's Guide:

I've posted this before but it's been buried so hopefully his will help. You don't have to study all of this, in fact only 10% of it will probably end up being examined, but it's worth having that peace of mind.

For maths:

- Angles
- Pythagoras
- Trigonometry (SOHCAHTOA)
- Linear Algebra
- Simultaneous Equations
- Linear Relations (Sketching, understanding the different properties)
- Measurement (Surface Area, Volume, Conversion, Area, Perimeter)
- Indices Law
- Surds
- Geometry (Basics behind Congruence, Similarity and Bearings)
- Factorising and Expanding (Make sure you can do these fast)
- Parabolas (Sketching and Properties)
- Quadratic Equations (Nulls Law will be useful)
- Probability (Optional but may save a few seconds in the test if you understand how a certain chart works)

For science:

Chemistry:
Atoms
Chemical Bonds
Chemical Reactions
Nuclear Decay
Radiation
Periodic Table
Reaction Rates
Matter

Physics:
Thermodynamics
Energy
Light
Waves
Sound
Forces
Friction
Motion
Heat
Mechanics
Space
Electricity
Magnetism

Biology:
Animal Cells
Plant Cells
Five Senses
Digestive System
Circulatory System
Nervous System
Muscular System
Endocrine System
Evolution
Classification
Plants
Photosynthesis
Respiration
Enzymes
Genetics

Good luck :)

Thanks Everyone!

Try the 2019 GAT writing piece 1 for the second science essay, however also include your own knowledge. The topic is on Mars!

Hello!!

I am in year 9 and I am interested in applying for JMSS in year 10.

If someone has any practice papers especially for science reasoning, it will be highly appreciated if you can share them with me.
Also, is there any recommendations for any tutoring services?

Thanks!!

Hi, I want to do the JMSS test this year and could someone please tell me the format of the science and math tests as I have no idea what I should do/study for. Also, could someone please tell me the number of tests and anything that might me necessary!

Thanks :))
