Hey guys,
I have been noticing many people asking about JMSS testing on ATAR notes recently so I took the pleasure to set up this thread! This thread will be a place to discuss about how you are studying for the test, interview practice (hopefully) and just other general stuff about JMSS!

Have fun

hey man
im one of the people trying out for jmss in 2015. i currently go to edu kingdom (tutor). I have no real issue for maths and science, it's just the numerical reasoning that's killing me. I find it quite difficuilt to identify number patterns, shapes and patterns given that short a time. Are there any special tips/tricks/shortcuts that I could use?

Hi,
thanks for replying to my post. For number patterns I would just try and websites like http://www.funbrain.com/cracker/ start at hard do five a day and slowly you will improve you ability to identify number patterns and you will notice after a while you will become quicker and more accurate at completing these puzzles-practice makes perfect. As for shape patterns I do not really have any ideas for because I am generally just good at remembering shapes.  :P

I'm not sure about the yr 11 entrance and how to prepare for that, but i'm sure that it will be different to the yr 9 entrance exam which in that case i can't offer much help, as i'm trying out for yr 10 entrance. But i suggest reading other threads and covering the curriculum for your year level for both maths and science would be helpful. Also reading plenty of science articles and magazines would be helpful, as it can help broaden your understanding on how science affects our world everyday which is useful for the essays.

Some links that i recommend are:
http://www.newscientist.com/
http://www.sciencedaily.com/
http://www.sci-news.com/
http://www.funbrain.com/cracker/ (for numerical reasoning)

And just past icas and test papers would suffice i guess. Hope that helped :)

how many hours you guys studying?
im trying to fit in about 1-2 hours every day, quite hard tho especially on holidays
rn im finishing notes on yr9/yr10 science topics and about to move my focus completely onto mathematics
id highly recommend hanibals study guide as a reference if you guys are stuck

- Angles
- Pythagoras
- Trigonometry (SOHCAHTOA)
- Linear Algebra
- Simultaneous Equations
- Linear Relations (Sketching, understanding the different properties)
- Measurement (Surface Area, Volume, Conversion, Area, Perimeter)
- Indices Law
- Surds
- Geometry (Basics behind Congruence, Similarity and Bearings)
- Factorising and Expanding (Make sure you can do these fast)
- Parabolas (Sketching and Properties)
- Quadratic Equations (Nulls Law will be useful)
- Probability (Optional but may save a few seconds in the test if you understand how a certain chart works)

For science:

Chemistry:
Atoms
Chemical Bonds
Chemical Reactions
Nuclear Decay
Radiation
Periodic Table
Reaction Rates
Matter

Physics:
Thermodynamics
Energy
Light
Waves
Sound
Forces
Friction
Motion
Heat
Mechanics
Space
Electricity
Magnetism

Biology:
Animal Cells
Plant Cells
Five Senses
Digestive System
Circulatory System
Nervous System
Muscular System
Endocrine System
Evolution
Classification
Plants
Photosynthesis
Respiration
Enzymes
Genetics

How is it hard to fit in 1-2 hours of study in the holidays, like shouldn't it be easier?

Good job on you guys for bothering to actually study for the test and prep up for it 👍

But just a reminder that the entrance exam is actually pretty easy, and I would recommend you all to make sure that you can do every question you can find on say linear algebra before bothering to looks at matrices. What I mean by that is make sure you have a very solid grasp on some of the basic maths concepts before looking at other concepts, as there will be more questions on linear algebra than that one question on logarithms.

But it will be worthwhile to know those things @Iman2098

Thx, but like was there any stuff relating to reaction rates, log and matrices in last year's exam? Because i don't mind studying them. It's just that i need to know if i'm actually studying stuff that is going to useful for me in the exam or if i'm just wasting my time.

hes basically saying first get the fundamentals down so yr 8 and yr 9 so do every chapter review q etc after weve got this down move onto year 10 if we have time and according to th e other posts, there were a few qs about reaction rates i believe so best if we study it
