Sibling At Selective School

Hi, could I please have the following questions answered ;D
1) If you have a brother at Melbourne High, does this mean it is likely that you will get into a selective school?
2) If you get bad marks in the selective test, but have a brother in Melbourne High will I still be able to get into the school?
3) Is the 5% rule out of all the students in year 8 at my school, or is it only the students who sat the test at my school!
Thanks :)

Hey,

As far as I know, I don't think having a sibling at a selective school will give you any advantage in getting into the school. It isn't like private schools where that may give you an advantage. So, if you get bad marks on the test, this will lower your chances of getting in and having a sibling probably won't be able to offset this enough even if having a sibling at the selective school increases your chances.

The 8% rule would be for your year 8 cohort not the people at your school who sat the test.

Hope this helps.

Not sure. You'd have to read their rules which I'm not sure where to find them. Try searching around for it on their website. However, I wouldn't waste my time with these numbers since you can't control how many people from your school sit the test/get in so just focus on studying for the exam :)

Hello there,

1) Having a sibling attending your selective school of choice does not in any way or form give you an advantage/disadvantage over others.
2) Same as the above, 'having a sibling' is not a criteria when applying, hence, it gives you no advantage.
3) Yes, it is the 5% rule (not 8%). The 5% rule applies to everyone in your year 8 cohort. For example, if your year 8 cohort has 100 students, then only 5% of 100 (5 students) will be able to get an offer into the selective schools.

Hope this helps.
