Title: Which book for units 3/4?
Post by: happycat on November 26, 2010, 01:29:18 pm
When I got the booklist for the math methods textbook after enrolling it had the essential as opposed to the jacaranda plus that I got. When I looked at the essential version it didn't seem as clear as the jacaranda which wasn't in my booklist. It's such a pain in the ass trying to get the exact one.

So I'm asking you which book should I be using? Jacaranda or essential?

My school will be using Maths Quest but I will be using Essentials.

I use Essentials and I've heard it's the best.

Depends on what you're looking for. If you're looking at quality of Q's, then essential would be right for you.

Our school requires Maths quest (probably because some of our teachers wrote it haha) but they do say that if you're aiming particuarly high, essentials should also be used.

I used essentials for 1/2 methods, I had no problems with it personally - fairly detailed yet concise explanations, and decent questions (in my opinion). I've been able to do methods 3/4 and specialist on my own so far, as well, so that's probably a good sign.

I've not used jacaranda before, but comparing maths quest and essentials, essentials was definitely better.

Here's what I've heard and confirmed for myself:

Essentials: Clear and concise points, brilliant questions, sometimes going beyond the scope of the course to train you to think laterally. Some of my friends credited Essentials practice with getting them through this year's exam because of the problem-solving style it perpetrated. I find the examples a bit vague sometimes, however.

Heinemann: I found the colourful chapter introductions helpful (yes, childish I know >.<), and as for reading to understand Maths, I thought this was the best. The rest use slightly more awkward language, and 'speak' more directly to a student with all the assumed knowledge down pat. Questions are not challenging enough for the astute VCE student however, imo.

Mathsquest (Jacaranda): Good calculator examples. Better questions than Heinemann, not as good as Essentials. Layout sometimes confusing.

MathsWorld: Good examples when given; usually leaves out examples for questions they subsequently ask you to do though, which can sometimes get a bit frustrating. Questions on par with Mathsquest, perhaps slightly easier.

Hope that helped somewhat ^-^

Thats exactly what my schools doing, we're using the heinemann specialists advanced, because the teacher said the people at my school had trouble with the essentials questions. There is the essentials methods book on here, just use the search engine, i found the e-book that way :)

Bahaha you will probably beat me on everything in year 12, but yeah I think the questions in MathsQuest are far too easy, and will not prepare you for everything on the exam. MQ is really good for weaker students struggling to grasp fundamentals, but why it is used at a school like Melbourne High, I don't know :X

Used because Dovey thinks it has better explanations and questions...

There appears to be 2 versions, one that's fourth edition and the other that doesn't specify which edition it is. My booklist doesn't state fourth edition so I'm assuming that I should get the latter.

Which book are are you referring to?

Anyway, the newer edition is always better because the CAS tips (screenshots, etc.) will be updated to the newest OS, get the new one (or the old one if the questions are the same and the new ebook from school library)

Essentials best for questions, theory not so good.

Perhaps use essentials to do questions and a different book for examples. Maybe the heinemann or maths quest I think theyve got better explainations.

Well perhaps I shouldn't waste many on getting a seperate textbook and just sticking to one. I'll be going for essential.

I agree with you there. It's so brief in it's explanation, Jacaranda is better for theory IMO.

It's ultimately your choice, but don't compromise your VCE because of a few bucks.. If you think getting two textbooks would help your a lot for methods, then the study score benefit you'll get may allow you to pursue your favourite course in uni. Just my point of view.

Having looked at and trialling several different textbooks, I think Essential is definitely the best.

We're using Maths world at my school for methods, and heinemann for specialists. I bought these two books, and the essentials books. If your worried about money, just buy the books second hand, they should still be in good condition
