Title: Geography Question Thread
Post by: marshmallow.on.fire on July 14, 2017, 08:26:52 pm
HSC GEOGRAPHY Q&A THREAD

What is this thread for?
If you have general questions about the HSC Geography course or how to improve in certain areas, this is the place to ask! 👌

Who can/will answer questions?
Everyone is welcome to contribute; even if you're unsure of yourself, providing different perspectives is incredibly valuable.

Please don't be dissuaded by the fact that you haven't finished Year 12, or didn't score as highly as others, or your advice contradicts something else you've seen on this thread, or whatever; none of this disqualifies you from helping others. And if you're worried you do have some sort of misconception, put it out there and someone else can clarify and modify your understanding!

There'll be a whole bunch of other high-scoring students with their own wealths of wisdom to share with you. So you may even get multiple answers from different people offering their insights - very cool.

To ask a question or make a post, you will first need an ATAR Notes account. You probably already have one, but if you don't, it takes about four seconds to sign up - and completely free!

Hey guys, I'm a causal ATAR Notes kid, and I've made this super thread to act as a (hopefully) massive group of posts with a range of questions and answers for Geography HSC. This way everything can be kept together and hopefully used more often, as the geography 'stuff' on atar notes slowly builds.
We need to come together against those who call our subject "2U Colouring In"!!! Because geo is actually incredibly hard and it's a team effort  8) 8)
So get posting kids!

Omg, '2U Colouring In,' I've never heard that before and gave me a chuckle ;)

I love this, and want to help! I've stickied this post to act as a Geography Resources thread!! ;D

I know Geography hasn't gotten much AN love in NSW just yet. I want to start fixing that.

Let's make this a central place for giving and receiving help with Geography questions. All the subjects we have lectures for started with questions and answers on the forums - It only builds from there ;D

You can register to ask a question by clicking here!

Awesome, thanks so much Jamon!
(Also, thanks again for this past week's lectures. It was totally worth organising a group of ten friends from Newcastle to come down for a couple of days to attend them).

How are people planning their study for the HSC exams?
Does anyone have any good websites for finding exams which have full stimulus booklets? I'm struggling!
How are you planning your extended responses? Mind-maps on syllabus dot points?
Thanks, to any who reply! you guys are the bomb!

Soooo, I didn't even know about this until today... but all HSC Geography Exams on the NESA website have the full Stimulus booklet, ITS AT THE END OF THE WHOLE EXAM (PRETTY AMAZING RIGHT). I was scared about how I would do past papers without a stimulus booklet, but through my desperation, I found the answer to all my problems (and hopefully yours too) :) ENJOY

HSC Focus is the best site I could find for trial exams, much more challenging than past HSC's!

For my study I started a YouTube channel to make vids on the syllabus, so I can study and help others at the same time  lol (if you wanna have a look it called Potato Hater's World), I also am gonna finish writing my notes and do a heap of past papers and open book essays. As for stimulus, they are at the end of the past papers as previously mentioned, I would just reccomend printing them out to work on them since the scale of the diagrams could affect answers and also you can draw all over them :)

Hey guys, for the dot point in people and economic activity that says
- the environmental, social, and economic impacts of the economic activity such as ...
What do we talk about? Impacts on the activity, or impacts on the world?
We've been taught impacts on the activity but when I read that dot point I think it should be the world. Which is it?

This heavily depends on which economic activity you are studying, e.g I'm doing tourism.

You need to discuss the positives and negatives of all 3 impacts resulting from the economic activity on the world.
E.g. for environmental impacts - positives such as increased awareness through education and negatives such as pollution, erosion, degradation etc
For economic impacts - provision of infrastructure, millions of people being employed globally (good to include some stats too, e.g. 7% of Australian workforce employed in tourism) and the negatives such as the casualisation of labour.
And so on for social impacts.

Hope this helped. Best of luck in the exam.

From what we have done, the environmental social and economic impacts are all on the world as a result of the activity, not on the activity. IE, the activity of coffee has environmental impacts through land degedation, erosion, loss of arable land, pollution from manufacturing, agrochemcial usage in waterways, plastic cups in waste, sun cultivated coffee inhibting diveristy and deforestation.

Ok that's what I thought, but our teacher has taught us about how the world impacts our economic activity - viticulture - which seemed very simular to the factors. Considering there's not much out there and I'm gonna need to re teach myself this dot point:
does anyone know any social, economic and environmental impacts of viticulture on the world??

I had the same issue #clueless teacher problems! If you are willing to spend $20, I went onto the hsc in the holidays premium resources page and bought the geo ones, there is a whole range of notes, but they have the best viticulture notes typed up, like so much on impacts which was my trials essay question and because of the notes I got 20/20! Haha but anyway that is my recommendation considering the textbook has nothing.

Attempt past questions and always revise case studies and contemporary media articles and statistics to illustrate each point you make.

hey.. can someone explain basically what 'ecological dimensions' are?
like what kind of things would you be expected to cover for a question that says 'describe the ecological dimensions of this economic enterprise operating at a local scale'
we did tourism (Thredbo) for PEA.. also.. how it says 'local scale'.... does that just mean that you should keep your answer within the limits of that specific economic enterprise? (like don't start talking about overseas tourism!?) or something totally diff?

HEYYY BIFF!!!... :)
i think ecological dimensions is like the relationship between people and the natural environment and the impacts they have on one another?!?.... does that make any sense?!...
so i'm guessing for thredbo u would talk about the interaction of people and the environment there... how the environment is impacted (how all those plants and animals, etc that are endangered), pollution, tourist demands etc etc... also ecological sustainability (maybe talk about ecotourism... how they use those board walks and stuff!?!... tours educating about the environment?!)
I have no idea if this is right so please correct me if i'm wrong!!!!!....

HELLO EVERYONE..

could someone please help we out.. i was wondering what locational factors include? we had a question on it in our cssa trial paper... the question was Explain the locational factors of an economic enterprise at a local scale. ....I only got 2/4 marks for the question. Our case study for an economic enterprise was thredbo so i answered about it's location, kms from sydney, altitude, topography of the land and climate... the feedback said you need a wider variety of locational factors.... what else should have i included?!?..  ???
thanks so much for ur help!!!!!!!  ;D

Britt  :D

That confuses me too since that sounds like enough for a 4 marker. Is there anything around the enterprise that could have an impact such as transport or land used for other purposes (by which I mean for my enterprise of Drayton's Family wines I could use agricultural land) other than that it seems you've got locational factors covered, especially for 4 marks.

Hey! So so far you have only mentioned really biophysical factors, so maybe something about how their location is in close proximity to other similar businesses, allowing the efficient spread of ideas? And also the spread of goods which complement their revenue e.g. Places where you can stay, nearby shops, etc.

Sorry  that's all I can think of cause I do viticulture (Draytons too! :) ) Best of luck for tuesday's exam!

Hey I was wondering for the 2013 HSC Q26 (Analyse the impact of urban dynamics on the ecological sustainability of a large city in the developed world - being Sydney) it is legitimate to say that the changing economic character of Sydney with urban consolidation and decay of manufacturing warehouses has led to improved ecological sustainability. Ideally I wouldn't pick this as my essay but if I had to what would be the key things to note

I atrempted to write this essay cause I'm trying to avoid writing about my enterprise and found it so hard! I messaged my teacher asking the same thing but no reply yet. I think if you were to talk about decay link that to renewal and show how by renewing the space land isn't wasted and more oppotunities for ecologically sustainable design are presented. You could also maybe talk about how suburbanisation means more land needs to be cleared having a negative impact on ecological sustainability. Other than that I'm in the same boat.

Hey. I just did an essay on this question. I just strucutured it two paragrpahs on social strcuture, 2 on economic charecter and 2 on clculutre of place in sydney. Every sentence i just tried to shape it to talk about the dynamics affecting these areas of Sydney to lead to a sustinable future and longevity of the city. The point u made above was like the exact same as i was talking about. if u want . dm me and we can trade essay?

I went through all the past questions since 2001 yesterday. They have not asked about dominance/dependence since 2005 and have never asked about regional centres so they could be a possibility.

Yeah I was surprised to find someone else doing it! :) I honestly love viticulture/Drayton the most in year 12 geo, I got these super great notes from bored of studies that I basically use for everything, as well as my own excursion notes! So I usually sit down and memorise everything, but I don't really have enough time for this exam lol so I am basically reading over everything and memorising heaps of stats, so it usually comes to me in exams. What about you??

If they ask an urban dynamics question, which they probably will, I won't be happy :/

Though it's likely you've already considered some of these options, these are what i've been using to study recently:
- plan several extended responses in reference to past questions (and then actually write some of these)
- memorise statistics for every topic(make flash cards or posters)
- make mind maps on some of the most popular topics (e.g. nature and spatial patterns for world cities)
- find some simple diagrams/graphs/maps/tables which you can use in your extended responses and longer short answer questions (e.g. long shore drift or dune systems).
- focus on the areas you struggle with  (for me that's finding the area in maps...)

I hope this helps! Good luck everyone tomorrow!

Ooh what notes from BoS do you use? I know it's so late but my teacher was away a lot at the end of the topic and seems to be MIA these holidays so he just kinda gave us a brief ppt to teach ourselves which I don't understand. I've gone through it several times and made notes so hopefully some of it sticks but yeah - despite loving viticulture I'm not looking forward to Drayton's.

For everything else it's fine. I've just made little mind maps of key points, done/ planned some past papers, read my past assesment tasks looking for weaknesses and things I've forgotten and reading over my examples. I really need to do some hard core skills practice in the next 4 hours too. So basically skills and Drayton's are my downfall right now.

Don't worry too much, geo is one of those subjects you can make up stuff in the exam and they won't realise. In trials my friend made up 3 articles for megacities and got 18/20 (double marked by the ravenswood teacher) so you should be fine lol.

I think world cities proliferated following the effects of globalisation (probably around 1960s) of economic activity which facilitated networks and trade that are part of the nature of world cities. It is more than likely to be a gradual process that has quickened significantly with the increasing technology available today

World cities are centres of economic and cultural authority that provide, control and lead the world in aspects such as business activity, human capital, infomation exchange, cultural experience and political engagement. These aspects are called dimensions and are measured by metrics such as the number of Fortune 500 companies, stock exchanges, the number of museums and theatrical performances, global sporting events etc. If you can find the AT Kearney global cities report for 2016 (or maybe even 2017, dunno if it exists yet but it might) that should give you more info on what I'm talking about in terms of the dimensions and metrics.

Hey... just wondering if someone can help me as to what solutions there are in the future for those who don't have access to employment? This is mainly relevant to those in Megacities and in developing countries....
Any thoughts on this??

Thanks ;D

Just a quick reply to gie you some ideas until I get home and can give a longer response
Some solutions to lack of employment in megacities are
- operation of informal economies
- waste picking

Hope that gives you a starting point

Post by: Potatohater on November 29, 2017, 11:02:21 pm
Ok so, in mega cities, the informal economy is quite large due to the lack of formal job oppotunities. This involves selling hand made goods, picking through trash and selling off recyclables and offering services such as sewing. This is a problem because it means that these people don't pay tax, meaning less money for the govenment and thus they can't improve the infrastructure, trapping the city in a cycle of poverty. It also increases the likley hood of exploitation as there are no regulations, and sale prices can be hyper inflated based on supply and demand.

So informal economies are the main way people respond to employment issues, however this is clearly an issue in itsself so some better solutions include the self help project of the Grameen bank in Dhaka which gives out small long term loans to people to help them get into the workforce.

There are also heaps of other self help projects, NGO responses and government intervention solutions in other mega cities which are worth looking into cause it's pretty interesting, but yeah, the ones I mainly focused on during HSC prep were the Grameen bank self help project and the flawed response that is the informal economy. So hopefully that answers your question  :)

Yeah for HSC you do need to know heaps of stuff and have relevant examples and statistics you can talk about, it's so annoying how they don't even ask you to use much of it in the exam but you still need it cause you don't know what they are going to ask you in the exam. It's all very interesting anyway so remebering all these illustrative examples as they are called shouldn't be too much of a chore  :)

Omg, to think I almost studied urban planning at uni!

Urban planning is important to understand because it helps us prepare for future population growth. By understanding how people and cities function we can implement strategies to solve problems and keep the city functioning as efficiently as possible.
Hopefully that answers your question  :)

Yeah I would agree with this. For example, the Great Barrier Reef is massive and highly productive where as Stangers Creek is tiny and pretty unproductive.

Stuck on q1, 4 and 6 from the 2001 HSC exam. Pretty sure I know the methods but can't seem to get the answers. Any ideas?

Q1.
1cm = 10 companies.
1987 = 49 out of 66 NZ Owned = 74%
1997 = 39 out of 92 NZ Owned = 42%
74-42
= 32% --> C
Tip: I had attempted to calculate percentage change for just NZ Owned companies (ie, how many more NZ owned companies were there in 97 than 87, but the Question actually asks for the change in the percentage of NZ Owned Companies from 87 to 97 in comparison to TNCs.

Q4.
Area of Queenstown = 4 x 3 (Approx) = 12 cm squared.
1cm2 = 25000
Therefore 12 x 25000 = 300000 --> B

Q6.
Distance by Road = 12cm = 12 km using scale of 1:100000
At 40km/h, 12/40 = 0.3 hrs
0.3 x 60 = 18 minutes --> C

Q3: I can't seem to get 12cm either, I get about 11

If you're doing the measurements on a computer/tablet/phone, make sure the scale is correct and that 1cm actually equals 1cm.

For example, I was doing the paper on my laptop and had zoomed in too far, meaning that 1cm on my ruler was only 0.5cm in real life.

I've found that when you print the exam from NESA, it prints slightly smaller that the original would have been (idk why), so that is probably why you are getting smaller values. As long as you are using the correct process and getting similar answers you should be fine.

Low precipitation is obvious due to the dry clay soil, desert fauna and also the climate graph of Source H.

It is low elevation because Barrow Island is a very flat island that doesn't rise far above sea level on any part of the land. This is evidenced in Photo 1 of Source F, and also the Topographic Map of Source D.

Make sure you use all the sources available and suggested in the question, in this case, Sources D, F and H

I think I have written that one, can't remember off the top of my head what I wrote BUT some ideas are
- changing in nature as population growth means population is changing
- changing in character due to the issue she that are arising from lack of governance and infrastructure and an increase in population
- changing spatial distribution as we are looking at mega cities of the developing world so if countries get wealthier whilst others remain poor, the spatial patterns change

Try and think about the current nature, character and spatial distribution and think about how it has changed leading up to this point and how it is changing due to increased populating, lack of governance and infrastructure

Hope this helps :)

Ok thankyou! So can I just talk about past changes or would I also have to talk about how megacities are still changing? Because most of the changes I can think of are past changes (eg. They are now mostly in the developing world but they used to be in developed countries)

Yep, so you can talk about how they have changed and how they are changing, just really make sure you hit the key points regarding nature, character and spatial distribution

Hello,
has anyone done the 2010 essay on urban dynamics? im doing my one on urban consolidation in barangaroo, but just really confused as to how I should structure it. The essay question is: Analyse ONE of the urban dynamics of change operating in a country town or a suburb.
Im kinda thinking I'll discuss the advantages and disadvantages of urban consolidation in two different paragraphs, but just didn't know if that's how I should be doing it or not?

Thanks in advance:)

Hi, I think it depends on what your urban dynamic is. For consolidation I think talking about advantages and disadvantages is a good idea, but maybe also include a paragraph before that to define consolidation and specifically explain the details of how it is occurring in your town. This would just help to expand your essay a bit more.

My dynamic is urban renewal in Honeysuckle (a suburb of Newcastle), so I would probably have one paragraph talking about the history and why urban renewal was neccessary, another on the urban renewal project and a final one on the impacts of the urban renewal. So maybe you could think about it this way if it works for your town.

I don't think there is a right or wrong way to structure it, as long as your essay is logical and addresses the question  :)

Hey, I'm doing Barangaroo for that dotpoint as well, except on Urban Renewal. This is how I am structuring my extended response: First paragraph explaining bit about its history and the redevelopment its undergoing. I then have three paragraphs on the 3 different parts of Barangaroo (North, South and Central) and the urban renewal undergoing each area.
I don't think there is any specific way you must structure it, I don't really talk about the disadvantages in mine as the urban renewal is mostly all just good for the suburb but I can see where you can go in terms of disadvantages for urban consolidation (:

I wouldn't talk about Sydney for this question, because it specifically says "occurring in a country town or suburb". You should also have a case study for a large city in the developed world (I'm guessing yours is Sydney), so make sure you don't get these confused.

So to answer your first question, yeah I have one case study for my suburb and one for my large city (Newcastle). For your large city you need to know a brief overview of all the dynamics of change, but your country town/suburb should be specific to ONE dynamic.

Hope this helps  :)

I wouldn't be surprised if it is about a local enterprise, because the last 3 years have been about the activity. I think either way you can use examples from your enterprise to support you argument if it is about the economic activity.

Just a note on this, make sure they can clearly see that you have written about the activity or enterprise. Just like in ecosystems at risk, they can ask "an ECOSYSTEM you have studied" OR "a CASE STUDY you have studied." If it's ecosystem, you can use case study examples but using examples from elsewhere is also important to show a wider understanding or whatever

I would probably mention all of them, because they all work together to interact (therefore make it about a process) to create the ecosystem

For example, in coral reefs climate impacts the water (cyclones, temperature, etc) which impacts the coral (biosphere) eg bleaching, pieces breaking off, etc

So world cities form part of an international urban network. In this question I would talk about things like networks of telecommunications, flow of people between firms, mobile networks, an inter-locking system of firms, that sort of thing. I did struggle with this question myself when I went to write a plan as I feel it's quite limiting, so lets hope they don't ask it/ask good questions for the other topics!

I'm planning for all 3 topics because as you said you need to know all of them for short answers anyway, so it doesn't take too much effort to know everthing in slightly more depth. I just think it's safer to know all of them in case on of the topics you prepared for has a really hard question, but it could be fine if you are spending more time on your 2 chosen topics.

What's the difference between a precis map and chloropleth map?
Title: Re: Geography Question Thread
Post by: gilliesb18 on November 07, 2018, 08:14:07 am
A precis map is basically a simple topographic map which shows only the main features of a topographical map, so landuse, important buildings etc.
A choropleth map uses colors and shades to indicate the average values of a particular quantity in those areas. So this means that a map showing temperature in Australia would use the color red, for example, to indicate the hottest area, and blue to indicate the coldest area.
Does that make some sense?

The answer should be ecological dimension, tbh I don't know exactly what it means but environmental constraint is the environmental factors which limit a business or activity, so this refers more to people and economic activity. For example an environmental constraint for viticuluture (growing grapes for wine which is my economic activity) is that they can only grow in Mediterranean climates.

From google: "the ecological dimension describes the relationship that exists between people and the natural elements of the environment and the impacts that they have upon one another."

Basically though, ecological dimension is the relationship between humans and their impact on the environment. Environmental constraint is how the area is restricted by the environment I believe...so alpine tourism for example can only take place in cold areas with snow, obviously:)
that help at all?
And to answer your other one, precis maps can use colors, but not to differentiate between temperatures etc, more to differentiate the areas, so land use, say an area may be green to depict a park, blue is used to show water. That make sense?
Choropleth maps use colors in gradients to show things like temperature, precipitation etc.

Choropleth maps use colors in gradients to show things like temperature, precipitation etc.

So to summarise:
Ecological dimension = human impacts
Environmental constraint = environmental limits
Precis map = simplified topographic map
Chloropleth map = colours show trends

Thanks for the help!

Hey can someone please help me understand how to work out the time of day when just looking at a photo??
Also how do you work out a semi-logarithmic graph??

For time of day, usually they will get you to refer to a map and you will know what direction the photo is taken from (given or it will be indicated in the image eg look at water, mountains, etc). I like to rotate the map around based on the way the photo is facing. Then, look at the length and direction of the shadows. If they are long, the photo is likely mid morning or mid afternoon while if they are shorter it is likely in the middle of the day. The direction indicated if its morning or afternoon (think of where the sun would have to be to create the shadows and therefore if its in the east/west).

For things where they give you a key or say complete the key then construct eg precis maps, transects, are you allowed to just use coloured pencils rather than come up with symbols?

I think they say to use pen coz the drawings, colour, etc doesn't show up well when they scan them in!!

I would have thought you can, because one of the items on the list of equipment you can take in for geography is coloured pencils, so they wouldn't say this if you couldn't use them.

I don’t do geography so don’t know for sure but I’ve heard for other subjects (eg math) they scan in b&w - hence why we use black pen not blue so maybe don’t just in case or email your teacher

Coloured pencils are on the list of equipment for the exam

I'm using Sao Paulo as a case study for a mega city.
I have a few responses as to challenges (fixing pollution, housing, education, medical)... will this be enough for an essay or should I be using more responses???
If anyone has better responses please suggest them!! :D

As long as you have enough detail to evaluate/examine or whatever the question says. The expected length is 800 words, and I doubt that this year's urban one will be on mega cities. Either world cities (hasn't been asked for a fair few years) or urban dynamics (culture of place hasn't been asked yet, and this area of the topic has much more room to ask a wider range of questions). I'm hoping that it's urban dynamics tbh so that the other 2 qs are good and then urban dynamics won't be in short answer

Ok goodo!!
BTW what do you mean by "culture of a place"??
(just so I'm prepared ;D ;D)

Hi! I was wondering if anyone had any notes or a good resource on the biophysical interactions within a rainforest?

Thanks so much  :)

Hello,

Anyone know of any good resources that help with geo? Like any books, podcasts, websites etc. I'm pretty keen on acing this subject and need some extra resources just to get ahead.
Also, I don't do maths, therefore my skills aren't my forte. However, I feel I should need to nail them because I'll get more marks (obviously). Does anyone have any tips as to how to improve skills. I know an obvious answer is "practice" but is there anything in particular that someone who is really good with the skills does?

Cheers

I found that there weren't that many resources since it's such a small subject. The main thing is to keep up to date with the news for your case studies (eg the great barrier reef) and do practice questions from past exams. Make sure that you seek feedback on your answers as well, using the marking criteria or even giving them to your teacher.

As for skills, maybe try making a list of them and the tricks involved with each one? Then any you struggle with the most you can ask your teacher to go over in class (there is no point learning stuff that everyone already knows). I don't really have any particular tips, you are right in saying that it's practice since skills is about applying concepts/methods to situations.

Hope this helps :)

Hi everyone,
Just wondering any of you have past prelim papers of any sort? I've done a ton of skills work so I should be fine for it, it's just structuring respones and time management that I needa work on haha

Hi! How do you find the rate of increase in a semi-log graph? Is it just the steepest line or is it, hypothetically, the difference over the given time period, since one side of the axes is logarithmic and judging by the steepness alone is incorrect?
