Title: Tax File Number while overseas
Post by: PocketRishi on December 14, 2019, 03:55:35 pm
Hi all,

I am currently overseas and I had completely forgotten about applying for a TFN until I checked back on VTAC. I am afraid that just ordering the TFN form might take weeks, let alone sending it back with CERTIFIED documents, which might be too late.

I will be back in Australia in mid-February, so is it possible to apply for one around then, considering that it usually takes less than two weeks? I will be done without a HECS loan... I guess I'll contact VTAC/ATO about this.

Any help will be appreciated!

You can apply for the TFN whenever you like; it's just the processing part on the ATO's side that takes the longest (something like 10 business days - 6 weeks IIRC). From memory, after you apply for your TFN, you're given a reference number of some sort. Uni enrolments usually have a way to use this interim reference number while you wait for the real TFN number, so it should be OK if you want to apply for a HECS loan during the processing time, if your TFN doesn't quite arrive in time (but hopefully it does though!).

Hope that helps. :)

Hey PocketRishi!😀

Just adding on to Angel Wings' response, just make sure you are applying for your TFN over a certified government website.

Someone I know didn't apply for one over a certified government website and they got scammed for money

I hope this helps😀
