Hey guys. I've recently just got the grades back for my final SAC in unit 3. For the first SAC I got 80% and for the most recent one, I got 79%. Can I still get a study score of 42-43 if I do well on unit 4 and the exam?

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Your raw SAC marks are moderated according to your performance, your cohort's performance and the state cohort's performance in SACs and the exam. That's why it often is the case that the marks a student gets aren't exactly what shows up on the statement of results.

So to answer your question, yes, a 42 or 43 study score is still possible. You can use the grade boundaries available on the VCAA website to estimate where you might stand in terms of grades. Also, the Victorian Technical Discussion Board has guides on how to predict your study score. Keep in mind you still have unit 4 and the exam, and all hope hasn't been lost for achieving your goal.

Good luck :)

Your raw SAC score is only used to generate an internal ranking which is then converted to a numerical grade (and corresponding letter grade) by VCAA, who take into account cohort performance on the exam. Even if you know how previous years SACs were scaled at your school, SAC moderation does change from year to year even in the same school. If you did bio last year, you're going to find U4 chem a lot easier than U3 since a lot of the biochem stuff overlaps with bio U3. To do well in the exam, I'd strongly recommend dynamicscience which is a website that groups all past VCAA chem exam questions by topic, it probably saved my study score.

For reference, I got a raw 40 in chem with the following in 2018:

U3 SAC: raw 85% (scaled to 88%), rank 60 in a strong cohort of 110
U4 SAC: raw 90% (scaled to 96%), rank 5-10 in a strong cohort of 110
Exam: 195/240 (A+ cutoff in 2018 was 194/240, so barely scraped it. Usually a low A+ translates to a ~39 study score)
VCE 2016-2018

2017: Biology [38], Further Maths [44]

2018: Methods [37], French [38], Chem [40], English [44]

UMAT: 56/43/80, 57th percentile (LLLLOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLL)

ATAR: 98.1

2019-2021: Bachelor of Biomedical Science at Monash (Scholars), minoring in Chemistry

GAMSAT September 2021: 65/67/86, 76 overall (98th percentile)

2022: Chilling

In simple terms:
1. Your SAC rank matters more than ur score.
2. If ur SAC rank matches ur exam rank (eg. 1st and 1st) - ur entire score will be based on ur exam mark. (mostly)
3. You don't want to be beaten by someone who will do worse than u on the exam. (otherwise ur SAC score will be scaled down, and theirs up).
