Title: Our Newest Honorary Moderator!
Post by: jamonwindeyer on January 24, 2019, 07:06:25 pm
Hi all! Today is a big day for the community, because we are gaining another Honorary Moderator. For those who are new, Honorary Moderators are those former community leaders who have made such an impact, that we solidify them as moderators permanently. It is not something that is given out lightly, we’re talking the likes of elysepopplewel, pi, jakesilove - True ATAR Notes legends.

Our newest honorary moderator is...

🎉 RUIACE 🎉

Rui’s first post was back in February 2016, so nearly three years ago. While Elyse, Jake and myself were the ‘original trifecta’ of AN-NSW, Rui was the honorary fourth - Because not only did he keep up with our efforts to grow the ATAR Notes community, he quickly outpaced us. His contributions have been absolutely gargantuan, particularly in the HSC Maths sections of the forums.

ATAR Notes Maths is synonymous with Rui’s name. With over 9500 posts in total, including over 1000 posts in each of the Mathematics, Maths Extension 1 and Maths Extension 2 boards, that’s pretty hard to argue. I mean, his posts alone are a THIRD of MX2 board (which means someone asks a question, he answers, and then they say thanks!). The fact that nearly 600 posts in the Chemistry board is at the end of this paragraph should put it into context - This is a once in ten years level of contribution.

Rui has served the AN community in countless ways. He served as a moderator for years (nearly 700 posts in the mod boards, yikes!), he’s authored (and currently authoring) a heap of ATAR Notes Notes and Topic Tests, and of course he’s been the HSC Maths Extension 2 lecturer (and now Tutesmart tutor!) for the past six series in a row. In doing all of this he’s contributed positivity, energy, and shared his enthusiasm for education and pushing beyond your limits.

You look at Rui’s journey on ATAR Notes the last few years, and it’s amazing what he’s contributed, and what he’s gotten in return. I mean, not many people can get their books into their local Dymocks,  become one of the most famous educators in the state, get a part time job, and even meet their partner (#Ruise), all from deciding to post on an educational forum. But that’s the sort of opportunity AN provides, and that’s the sort of person Rui is - Makes a whole lot of sense, that reciprocity, because AN and Rui are a bit of a match made in heaven.

That match will continue with some beautiful new purple squares under Rui’s profile - Beyond that, not much will change! Rui will still be around to help out on the forums, and of course continues to work with AN IRL. But it would be criminal to let Rui hit 10,000 posts without some recognition of this calibre - His impact on ATAR Notes will seriously be felt for years and years to come.

Feel free to add some further recognition and kudos in the comments! We all know Rui deserves copious amounts of it!

Definitely a worthy award for somebody who goes above and beyond (even outside his own state forums) to help others in need.

100% vouch and look forward to the continued contributions. :)

I was looking back at a similar thread ages ago and for the whole of last night "how do I make a speech without plagiarising what I already wrote back there"? And I felt like maybe I had nothing to say because my goodness Jamon did a good job already here. And then I saw the HoF post and all the quotes and I was like oh wow quick I needed to respond to all of that (hopefully I checked that off without missing anyone!). And now I feel if I don't do some "speech" it'd be an offence to the name of AN 😅

So whatever, I decided to just ignore that other thread exists (edit: noooo not the HoF). Where do I start? It's been almost a good 3 years since my first post (holy cow I'm old); that was just taking a random stab at another educational forum. Reading those quotes reminded me of how I spent a great deal of my first twelve months totally trying (maybe too hard) to gun out all those questions. I mean I had my reasons for being so fast back then but it may have been over the top aha. I still remember Brenden offering the notes job to me and I thought it was some kind of 20-60minute fluke at the time, when I soon realised oh wow it's an actual publication. Mind you, all of this happened at a point in time where I thought I'd never have a future.

And gradually, but surely I guess it built up. Like I really don't need to list all the milestones - they're all right there in the OP! (Far out, I'm fully convinced that the admin team know more about me than I do.) And whilst I do think it was ultimately my own job at you know, managing my own publications and lecture/tutorial materials, working in a team of like-minded people had to have contributed heaps. I doubt it would've been possible without the amazing team AN already had, and still does.

The Vic side of the forum was well established way before I hopped on here and it's quite clear it has remained still. (And yes I do enjoy sometimes hopping on the VCE math boards - it's quite refreshing having a change after being glued to so much HSC-specific maths, haha.) Being there at the start of the NSW expansion was special though. Whilst I could tell from quite early on that AN was growing in NSW, I don't think I could've predicted where we're at now. Not even trying to make a dig here; I actually think that it's kinda equal now? (Which makes sense when you consider that AN is expanding................. yeah I won't finish that sentence just so I don't get fired for saying what I may not be allowed to say yet 😂)

I mean, come on. Apart from the people (and maybe a certain df) I'm finding it harder to see a distinction between the quality and vibe of the community we have in the two states already! Will be great to see what's to come.

Of course, I have no plans of running anywhere at this stage. Ya, I have TuteSmart and certain things to author still, but I'm not ready to leave the roots behind yet.

I'm fairly sure I've said something similar before, but I'll say it again. AN gave me opportunity. It gave me a future.

But enough of that. I certainly wish to extend a huge THANK YOU to everyone who's been there throughout the journey. No matter what it was for (guiding me, supervising me, being helped out I guess?? by me, bantering with me or whatever), you've all have probably had some impact along the way as I walked down this road. I met so many new faces over this forum community and it's made the experience better than what I could've ever asked for. I look forward to my further time here with you all and what's there to come for ATAR Notes!

Also, I was dared into doing something TeX'y so here's my (a little bit desperate) attempt:
\[ \frac{2\pi r}{V} \, \frac{E}{f}\, \frac{d^2r}{dt^2} \, \frac{m}{MM}\, \frac{1}{4\pi \varepsilon_0} \left(ut+\frac12 at^2\right) \quad \Gamma(1+AN) =\color{blue}{\text{Thanks (AN)!}} \]

Oh, I thought you meant the Hall of Fame thread haha.

Great post, though, Rui. It certainly goes to show what simply getting involved can lead to! 💙
