Title: Expectations for VCE 2019
Post by: Joseph41 on January 08, 2019, 09:23:30 am
Whether you're going into Year 10, Year 11, Year 12, or something completely different, use this thread to muse about what you're expecting this year. After all, it's tricky to know sometimes, and getting things down on paper (er, the interwebs) can help!

I'm going to kick us off with what I remember to be some of my expectations before starting Year 12, and how accurate they ended up being.

1. VCD will be my favourite subject. Fairly accurate.
2. I'll be at a disadvantage going into HHD 3&4 without having done 1&2. Inaccurate - it ended up being my best subject.
3. I won't be able to deal with the stress of constant SACs etc. Inaccurate (although don't get me wrong, there were some stressful times).
4. Year 12 will be my favourite year of high school. Accurate (thankfully).
5. I'll get smashed from scaling. Inaccurate (I didn't really get how the system worked).

How about all of you? :)

I've got a few fairly standard hopes for this year.
 - do well in all my unit 3/4 subjects. This one is pretty obvious, but nonetheless it is still a goal.

 - keep on doing all my extracurricular activities. I don't want year 12 to dominate my whole life.

 - work on my social life and hang out with friends more often than the current dismal social life I have.

 - get my red p's. Closing in on the 120 hours, but probably won't get to it by my 18th birthday in Feb.

 - try to help out as much as I can on the biology board as well as AN as a whole  ;).

I'm doing English, Physics, spesh, methods, psych

- English is going to be the toughest to get through, I expect to get hopefully in the low 30's
- Physics will be my favourite subject (already done a few topics and loving it!), 45+
- I'll probably be doing methods and spesh even on my free time, 40+
- When psych classes come, it may be like meditation time for me  ;D
- I think that when I burn out (which is inevitable) and still push through, finishing the last exam is going to feel soooo good.
- I also believe I'm going to enjoy year 12 the most!

Man, I don't know about you guys (and girls) but I'm scared, and I feel as though I'm not ready for yr 12!

There will be times when you burn out and feel like you can't do VCE, at times like these, a break and some reflection for inspiration will do you well! Be prepared for the challenge, and embrace it! You will learn much about yourself and future life struggles.

You can minimise the impact of burnout. Don't overdo it, ensure you take time for yourself where you are completely free of study (and even thinking about it), don't cut out leisure/general activities you already do unless you can foresee it becoming a significant strain on your ability to do well. That 'out' is so important. 2019 cannot be just a year where you study Mon-Sun. Be organised and don't leave stuff until the last minute as it'll pile up very quickly. Plan it out, balance is key.

If you find yourself starting to sink, please speak up and speak to somebody whether that be a friend, a family member, a teacher, whoever. Sometimes just airing your thoughts can help so much.... and if it doesn't, then somebody who knows you well can suggest ways of dealing with stress, burnout, mental demons, the works. Everybody's tolerance levels are different so as soon as you start to feel it getting too much, take action and resolve it.

I'm glad you feel that way. :) This is a great resource and does its bit to equalise the playing field for all. :)

What really helped with burning out was ensuring that I stayed ahead of my class. Typically I stayed a month in front of whatever my class was doing so when I did inevitably burn out, I wouldn’t fall behind and it wouldn’t affect me big time.

But definitely, most people burn out. In term 3 I had a period of 2 weeks where I did not open my school bag at home AT ALL.
It’s normal and everyone experiences it. What matters is how you ensure it doesn’t significantly  affect your studies but MUCH more importantly your health.

1. Japanese will remain my favourite and highest scoring subject
2. I will put in a lot more effort towards Spesh this year compared to last year
3. I will get 25-32 for Economics since I only chose it because I wasn't allowed to pick up further
4. English will remain the hardest subject for me to achieve a decent score
5. There will be multiple periods in the year where I stop trying and burn out

My school doesn't allow anyone to pick up further unless they've been recommended to (i.e. failed methods 1/2) which kinda sucks because I really wanted to pick it up as well as many of my peers.
