Hey guys,
I'm doing year 12 mainstream English and was just wondering what is more important in regards to excelling in VCE English: Clarity and conciseness of expression or sophistication of writing

Definitely the former.
If you can add the latter as well that'll boost your grade, but keeping it clear and concise will get big points.

Being clear and concise is definitely important! Theres no point in adding fancy words to your writing if your articulation is poor.
I personally wrote very unsophisticated-ly in English, but usually filled my essays with complex ideas and a fair amount of analysis. This worked well for me!!
So in general, being concise and clear is more important, but like The Cat in the Hat said, if you can add sophisticated words on top of this, you'll do very well.

Alright thanks for the replies guys. Much appreciated! :)

The thing about sophisticated language is that it's not something you should have to 'work' for. When your ideas are complex, you should naturally find that sophisticated words are the best vehicles to express them, without feeling as if you are being over-the-top or laboured.
