bw304's vce journey!

hi all!

i've been finding these vce journals super interesting, so i thought i would make my own! it will mainly consist of me talking to myself, but i think it will be super cool to look back on in future. for a little background:

- i am starting yr12 in exactly one fortnight (eek)
- i'm taking english, methods, spesh, bio and chem
- i completed psych last year
- i enjoy sport, guitar, and hanging out with friends
- i'm looking to enter the medicine pathway following graduation
- i'm aiming for around a 95+ atar (would love to hit around a 99ish for undergrad med but i think i'd die in the process)

since school is starting so soon, i thought i'd share how I've been preparing for each subject
english
probably the subject I've done the least for (oops). i've just read and annotated the selected short stories from 'like a house on fire' which we are studying in the creative unit. i'm still yet to complete some guided questions for these, as well as read 'pride and prejudice' for text response. I'm probs gonna have to listen to the 10hr audiobook in 2x speed if i wanna get through it in time lol. i'm also thinking of creating a theme bank for (hopefully) both of these novels that i can add to as the term progresses!
methods
methods has been a lot of revision work tbh. i've completed the set chapter work and assignments for two topics, so now i'm just skimming through some of the edrolo videos to make sure i've got my head wrapped around everything!
spesh
similar to methods - i've done the chapter work and assignments so just looking through edrolo. i'm thinking i'll watch further ahead in spesh (compared to methods) because i do find the subject a bit more difficult so i definitely want to feel prepared when school starts back
chem
i've completed the set edrolo videos and questions and also gone a bit further ahead so i'm familiar with the content being taught in week 1/2. i think i'm gonna do some checkpoints questions to consolidate everything and just try to stay at least a couple chapters ahead throughout the year
bio
same as chem - i've completed the set edrolo and a few extra chapters too. i think i'll do some checkpoint q's and maybe rewatch some of the previous videos because there really is a fair bit of content that i need to understand (love/hate relationship with bio rn)

that's basically it! i'm honestly pretty excited for yr12 and really want to make the most of it... i'll probably post weekly/fortnightly depending on how busy things are!

Hey bw304! Great to see another VCE Journal!

Omg I am doing Like a House on Fire too. What do you think of it?? A lot of my friends hate it but tbh I secretly like it  :-\
I'm ngl kind of excited to do the creative unit, although I have the SAC in week 1 so that's not great  >:(

We are doing pretty similar subjects this year, I'm doing english, methods, spesh, chem and french. Have you had a look at the AN lectures so far for chem and methods? They have been so good for me, and I'm going to watch the english one tomorrow.

Can't wait to hear more from you!

hi lemur!
Omg I am doing Like a House on Fire too. What do you think of it??

i actually don't mind it either! i think the stories can appear a little bland at first because Kennedy tends to cover more common, everyday issues. but honestly once i get through a couple pages I'm already sucked in lol, especially once you notice all the little symbols throughout the stories!

your sac is pretty early too omg, mines around week 3 i think - good luck!!

Have you had a look at the AN lectures so far for chem and methods?

i haven't really looked into the lectures as of yet... i might do so if you've found it helpful! thanks for the suggestion!!

best wishes,
bw304

hey everyone!

it's been about a week since my first post so i thought I'd give an update on how things are tracking along! to be honest, I've been so busy with random things the past few days, and as a result, have gotten barely any work done. so yes, i am starting to feel the pressure.

it only just hit me the other day how close yr 12 is (one week!), as well as how quickly not only these school holidays, but the entirety of my high school journey, has gone. i think I'm starting to have those general apprehensions about the school year - am i prepared enough? have i done all the homework? will i manage my workload? am i studying effectively? and blah blah. I'm trying not to overthink things because back-to-school nerves are completely normal!

in terms of my individual subjects, there has been slight progress:
english: i completed the guided questions which i found were a good writing exercise. I've read 4 out of like 60 chapters in pride and prejudice, so I'm about 1/15th of the way there lol  :'(
all my other subjects: still watching edrolo... i haven't even touched checkpoints yet

my main dilemma at the moment is how i want to structure my notes for chem. over the holidays, i have been handwriting (relatively brief) notes from the edrolo slides as i watch the videos. at my school they also provide us with notes for each chapter which are used to teach the class. I'm planning to annotate these notes then transfer any key points i missed from edrolo into my book. my main concern is that this could be a waste of time? I've heard a lot of people say that they don't write notes in chem, but i find notetaking provides me with a foundation of knowledge that is helpful when i complete practice questions. (if anyone has an opinion on this small issue, feedback would be greatly appreciated)

anyways... i guess the rest of my week is going to be dedicated to completing the last few bits of homework and some general school prep (uniform, stationary, fixing my sleep routine etc.)
good luck to anyone who is also going back to school in the coming days!

term one, week one
i've been back at school for a couple days now, and so far things are going pretty good! there has been some ~conflict~ between people in my year level, which is annoying because it is such a distraction... why must people be petty lol.

besides that, my classes have run pretty smoothly! all of my teachers are great and so are majority of the people in my classes. i really like the extra freedom you get in yr12, in that i am pretty much responsible for my own learning and how i approach it.

my first sac is for english in two weeks from now. it is definitely approaching fast but seeing as how i have only 3 or so sacs this term, i'll manage.

at the moment i'm just trying to get back into a routine. i've somehow coped pretty well with waking up at 6.30 instead of 11 lol. the days have felt suuuper long though, and i'm lowkey exhausted by lunchtime. so yeah, my study habits are a bit jumbled at the moment oops

anyways, that's my brief update. i hope people have enjoyed their first days back !

I had a bit of giggle here.

My teachers are pre nice too. My chem teacher is like a mother hen, she gives you tough love when you need it but is also very gentle at times. I always give her a cheeky smile when she asks who needs a worksheet because I've lost it .   8) ;D

My maths teacher is also pre cool. He still hasn't recovered from his sunburn that happened 3 weeks ago, despite using sunscreen 3 times that day. 😂

He tells me to stop abusing him, but idk what that means🤭

Its really good to hear that you've had a good week so far!

my spesh teacher is like this too! i start to question whether i actually enjoy the subject or just like having him as a teacher haha

term one, week two
this was my first full week of classes, and it was definitely full on. i kinda felt that no matter how much study and homework i did each night, i was still behind in my classes.

my main focus has been english, as my sac is in less than a week. i just got the official prompts earlier today, so i'm hoping i can prepare for this task relatively well.

on another note... i am already behind in spesh. i had a double period on Thursday and we covered A LOT of content... guess i know what i'll be doing this weekend haha.

all my other subjects have been pretty chill though. i do have a sac for chem in under two weeks, but I've just about finished the content that is being tested so i'm gonna start some practise questions now.

next week i have a (compulsory) meeting with the careers coordinator to talk about unis, etc.. basically, we have to give her our yr 11 semester 2 exam results and we get an atar prediction based off those scores... which is very inaccurate. so many students have been told they'll get a raw 50 in methods... definitely questionable  ;)

anyways, that's my lil update!

term one, week three

hi everyone!
this week was superrrr hectic so i'm gonna break it down into subjects

english: i did my sac and i'm so relieved now omg. i was able to memorise my draft word for word surprisingly so i'm pretty happy with what i submitted. i'm really hoping for 25+/30 but my school marks english pretty harsh so we'll see  :-\ this weekend i have to read the second half of pride and prejudice... yes, I've been putting it off for a month now...

methods: i'm lowkey finding methods really tedious at the moment. idk if it's because we go a little slow in class (love my teacher, although she did chase me down the hallway bc i had two pairs of earrings in...). i'm thinking of getting ahead in the chapter work or something, because i've literally been doing nothing in class

spec: spec is pretty chill atm. we just started circular functions this week which was a breath of fresh air... it felt like we had been learning vectors since term 4 last year haha

chem: we had our prac this week and it was definitely questionable... the mass of our spirit burner increased by 20g after combustion??? it was a bit concerning. anyways, the write up/SAC thingo is on Wednesday and i'm a little nervous because no one in my class has been given any indication of what type of questions there will be. i'm just gonna do a heap of practise SACs this weekend and hope for the best.

bio: bio has been pretty good... i literally have the best teacher. i feel like we're going through content at a good speed. i have a SAC coming up early in week 6 (last one for the term...) so once chem is done that will be my main focus.

well, that's it from me! hope everyone enjoyed their week :)

I have so many sacs for the last two weeks of term. I hate it when teachers do that. 😣

lil update
i had my much anticipated chem sac today, and i am so happy to get it over and done with. i felt like i had to avoid so many chem students today because everyone was fully stressing out lol  :P
it was a short one (almost didn't finish), but overall i feel pretty okay with how it went! there's one question i know i messed up but it should only cost me a mark or two... hopefully there's not much more i got wrong. i'm hoping for a 30+/35 so i'll see how that goes...

my last sac for the term is in just under a fortnight for bio so i'm just gonna focus on that now!
once my term 1 sacs are done i'm gonna try and get properly ahead in my subjects because next term is hectic. I've been describing majority of term 1 as hectic but I've added the red for term 2 because i'm not even exaggerating at this point... it's gonna be full on.
i'll have about 8 sacs, including the big methods and spec tasks. i think the GAT is in term 2 as well?? plus i'll be doing 1-2 schools sports plus a sport outside of school. busy times  ;D
anyways, i'll keep this message short and sweet...
i hope everyone enjoys the rest of their week!

term one, week 4
hi all!
the past week wasn't too busy, i had my chem sac and that's it...
although I've only had two sacs so far, i'm already dying to get my marks back. it's frustrating because i know that won't be happening for a little while. especially not for english  :'(
next week should (hopefully) be pretty chill as i haven't got anything on. i'm gonna spend most of my time doing bio study...
i'm hoping i'll have enough resources to do so. since there's a new study design this year, there aren't as many ~valid~ practise tests available. at least i finally got checkpoints!
anyways, i'm running out of things to talk about atm...
hope everyone enjoys the last 1.5 hours of their weekend  :-*
