Title: Understanding Energy Level Diagrams
Post by: wlayton on July 24, 2021, 12:22:51 pm
I have attached an image of a 7Li+ energy level diagram however i am not sure how to understand it and was curious if anyone would help me. I'm doing research for my IA3 for physics and wasn't sure if i should post this in chem or physics for help on this. Anyways, i've attached it below.
Thanks,
Will

Ps. Here's a link to the article i got it from (Its on page 23): https://d-nb.info/977560791/34

Can anyone help explain this graph to me?

This graph is showing the energy levels that electrons in Li+ may occupy when excited. When they're excited and fall back to their lowest energy state, electromagnetic radiation of a particular wavelength is emitted. I've only come across the energy levels for H-atoms in 1st year physical chem, you can actually workout the exact wavelength with Rydberg's equation but that equation only works for H. Not sure if there's an equation for Li.
