Title: Medicine at Monash... Commitment
Post by: Just another student on May 24, 2019, 06:21:50 pm
Hi everyone, just wondering how many hours a week are taken up by studying medicine(at Monash) in total (classes/ lectures/ pracs/ private study). Also how many hours a week in total is taken up by other degrees such as science or engineering (at Monash)? Is it possible to work many hours a week? Also is it possible to play sport at an elite level while studying medicine or will there not be enough time? Just wanting to gain an insight into the life of a med student, it would be great if any med students could post their time tables.

Thank in advance :))

Only a first year so can only speak for first year. But a typical week is about 20-24 hours of contact hours. That’s about 6 hours worth of lectures, ~10 hours of tutorial and ~6 hours of prac (although in first sem we don’t do any actual practicals).

There’s plenty of time to work within the week given that we often have Wednesday off and weekends. There also quite a few people who maintain heavy commitments outside of med such as elite sport, music etc and I think it is definitely possible to do those things with good work ethic.

Hope this helps.

I'm not at Monash, but can speak to medicine more broadly. In your earlier years, the amount of contact on campus isn't too bad, although the amount of work you have to do outside to keep up is fairly considerable. There's time to continue to participate in sport and work, but probably less than you'd otherwise be able to do. At UniMelb we're told we can only work eight hours a week, although many find opportunities to do more, particularly if they have flexible work arrangements.

As you transition into your clinical years, the amount of contact becomes more significant. There's a lot of heterogeneity, depending on where you're placed and what rotation you're on. Some rotations are a lot more flexible than others too, but you should expect to be in the hospital from anywhere between 30-80 hours a week, with those rotations on the higher side of that rarer than those on the lower side.

The most appealing thing about medicine!
While your at university you get to go out in to clinics and hospitals and apply what you've learnt !

What could be better than this  ???

As you reach 3rd year med and beyond - the hours get steadily more (probably reaching almost full time work hours most days of the week or even more with night shifts), but it's manageable (thousands of students have done it before you).

Plenty of med students do some form of part time work in the first two years, though it might be worth not committing too much until you've adjusted to the workload. They do recommend around 10 hours or less of work per week in the clinical years (3rd-5th year) but if you manage your time well, it's still possible to have part time work like tutoring.

Monash has a designated program for students (including those in med) playing elite sport where they can give you some flexibility for time off for comps etc - refer to https://www.monash.edu/teammonash/talented-student-support/elite-scheme
