I'm definitely going to try for kld. Unfortunate that Monash Scholars aren't accepting applications this year... which means none from our cohort will get a shot at the Monash Scholars program.

I really want to as well! Have you told any of your teachers about it? Because apparently we need school endorsement to apply, and I don't think anybody at my school knows what it is lol

I've told my coordinator about it, and I let her know I was keen... I guess now I just need to wait until we have to send in applications

i'm pretty sure i don't want to go to melbourne uni, do you think it would still be worth applying?

I did the KLD program and even though I'm at Monash now it was useful. The best thing I got from KLD is that the other kwongers in my cohort introduced me to AN (obviously AN has been very beneficial for me), and aside from that I liked networking with other students. Without it, I also wouldn't have met the person who influenced me to choose global challenges over research.

Basically, the best thing the program did for me was give me an avenue to network with other motivated students. Some people in the cohort really take advantage of that and some don't - it's your call how useful the program will be to you.

I'm in the KLD class of 2020 and I do recommend applying! Even if you don't want to go to Melbourne Uni that's alright. You get to meet a lot of like-minded people in the program and there are certain things you get access too. (Lectures provided for 3/4 units, exclusive events etc..)
It's a great place to make new friends and be able to learn together from other motivated people! ;D
Take any opportunity that you are given. You never know where it may lead you! :D

But what exactly is the KLD program?

(Taken from the UniMelb website - https://study.unimelb.edu.au/study-with-us/programs-for-high-achievers/kwong-lee-dow-young-scholars-program )

The Kwong Lee Dow Young Scholars Program is an academic enrichment program designed to support high achieving Victorian Year 11 and Year 12, and select secondary students living close to the New South Wales and South Australian borders.

If you're eligible, you'll get the exciting opportunity of experiencing university life and taking part in a range of academic events and activities, facilities to help you achieve your best – plus get a head start on your future studies and career!

When you finish your secondary studies, you could also be offered a guaranteed place in an undergraduate degree, financial assistance to move to Melbourne, and an overseas scholarship during your studies.

Not to sound rude or anything but how are you in the KLD class of 2020 when the applications for that haven't even opened.

Not a stupid question at all. Like jeydanaazli has shared, it's a uni program for highschool students. Basically a couple of students are picked from each school in & around Vic (min of 1, max of 3 iirc) based on applications the students send in. Then throughout the rest of highschool the students are invited to some events at the uni & at the end there are some perks they might get. When I was part of it I was able to borrow books from unimelb's library which was nice. Unless they've changed it, access to perks after hs is based on a) picking unimelb b) atar c)  financial assistance is based on SEAs.

Universities tend to have different outreach programs to engage/support the community and lowkey advertise themselves - kld is unimelb's one.

In my cohort we defined ourselves by the year we graduate high school. E.g. I was in the cohort of 2017 because that's when I was in yr 12

TY! It sounds great. Just one doubt - you said a minimum of 1. What if no-one in a school is applying except for an individual? What is the certainity that the person will be selected for this program?

That is also something I want to know, lol. I think I'm the only one who is applying at my school

Pretty much agree with you here! I had friends that applied for the program last year and were the only ones from their school and got in! On their website, it states that "at least one Young Scholar will be selected from each Victorian school" (if they put in at least one application) so if you are the only one to apply, you have a pretty big (but not absolutely certain) chance of getting in ;D

I think you're almost certainly guaranteed a place then, if you think no one else is applying. I was the only one in my school who put in an application in year 10 and got in, and my "resume" wasn't even that impressive.

But wasn't it 5 students that can be endorsed by the school, i.e: 5 students submit applications but not all are accepted.
So, I was wondering max students that are accepted from each school.

I've applied for Kwong Lee Dow this year. Did anyone else do the same? For me it was particularly a struggle to get my school's endorsement because I was moving schools. It would be kind of unfair to me personally if they refused endorsement because the school couldn't benefit from it, but luckily they changed their minds last second. It was so hard to answer the question about what I thought my most important achievement was, I just picked a few and spun into a favourable narrative. Hopefully all goes well and I make it through!

Hey there,

I'm pretty sure applications have closed for this year (the 2021 graduating cohort).
How it works is you speak to your teachers about your interest in the program and they nominate up to 5 Year 10s in your school. Then you fill in an online form with questions relating to your extracurricular activites, awards / prizes, achievements, life and future study goals although it is worth noting that these might vary each year.
I guess the biggest tip I could give is to treat the application as if you're applying for a job and sell yourself, but make sure you are honest.

Usually just 1 per school (2 is quite rare from what I've heard and usually that happens in schools with a very strong cohort).

Results should be out, I've received an email already. Got in :D

I think out of the 5 that were endorsed I was the only one that got in.

Congratulations! I got in too.  :) I found it weird that the website said they would release results on Friday and then they sent them out yesterday but whatever, I'm happy I got in.

Hello! I am in year 10 and I would like to ask you about extra programs I could do, like the KLD.
Also, may I know what the AN program represents for and means?

Thank you!

Pretty sure AN is AtarNotes (could be wrong though).
I second this - what other programs do unis have like KLD? Also, is there anything we can do besides putting in the work + talking to our teachers about KLD to 'up our chances' of getting in?

Yep, AN is atarnotes and I would say do a couple of extracurriculars (obvs not possible now during covid-19)/ list any that you've done in previous years and if you've had any leadership roles write those down too.

Hi, just wondering if there was any way I could submit an application without school endorsement? My school refused to give it to me as there were many people from my school looking for endorsement.  :(  Really want to be a part of this program.

Hey,
this is probably a bit too late but I think that you need to be endorsed by your school in order to submit an application. (I think each school can endorse a maximum of 5 people).

Maybe you could have a look at Monash Uni's Scholar's program(https://www.monash.edu/study/why-choose-monash/information-for-high-achieving-students/monash-scholars) or if you're listed as part of Monash's list of disadvantaged schools, you could have a look at their SEAMS program (https://www.monash.edu/access/outreach/seams).

Honestly, I wouldn't be too disappointed that you couldn't get into this program especially with coronavirus because I'm part of the program and other than the welcoming sessions that we had last year in December at Uni of Melbourne, we more or less haven't done anything as part of the program (there were events planned in April but they had to be cancelled because of COVID).
