Title: Katie-A Rhino's charge through the HSC!
Post by: katie,rinos on August 22, 2017, 10:33:56 pm
Hey,
I'm katie, rinos. I'm 17 and am in year 12 at the moment. I only have about 4 weeks left of actual classes (Yay!), but two months till the HSC and thought that this was a really cool idea.

Not too sure what to write right now, but I'll give you a little run down of my subjects.
My subjects are:
Advanced English-I'm not a huge fan of English-it's my worst subject and it's probably a subject that I will complain about. If anyone's interested i'm studying Frosts poetry (AOS), Metropolis/1984 (Mod A), Hamlet (Mod B), and The Art of Travel (Mod C).
General Maths- I actually prefer maths to English but it's still not my favourite subject.
Music 1- I play the clarinet and am doing 4 performances for the HSC (my topics are an instrument and its repertoire, 19th Century music, and 20/21st century music). The pieces that I am playing are Brahms-Clarinet Sonata no.2 , Schumann Fantasy piece (2), Milhaud-Duo Concertante and  Hurlstone-Ballade.
I've also just come home from a school musical rehearsal where i'm playing in the orchestra (school from 8:30am-9pm=a long tiring school day). Our first show is on Friday and were doing Mary Poppins. Might try to keep you guys updated-although we have longish night rehearsals it's actually really fun.
Legal-My options are consumers and family law. Found consumers fairly boring, especially at the start but family law is more interesting at the moment.
Ancient-I really love history and for Ancient I'm studying Pompeii/Herculaneum, Sparta, Julio-Claudians and Agrippina.
Extension History-Love Extension as well, really interesting stuff. We do JFK as our case study. You learn all these new concepts and things that really challenge your views on the world and the way that our history is written.
Hospitality- The work placement in this is really annoying me. I have about 15 hours that I still need to do. Like hospitality as well though, really fun course.
If you haven't realised I like all my subjects (except English)! Although 13 units is heaps their all really interesting and fun.

I'm not really sure yet what uni or course I will be doing next year-and UAC applications need to be in sometime next month. At the moment I want to be a music/history teacher but I just don't really know. So, I guess that this has been pretty stressful at the moment.

I'm going to try and update this thread at least every week, if not more. Some of my posts may be really small while others may be larger. I'm not really sure what to post at the moment, but I may post later on in the week to update you guys with my some of my trial marks (depending on if I feel brave enough)-I've been starting to get some back and it's not entirely what I was expecting.

I don't really know what else to add at the moment, so I guess that's all for now :D.

clarinet!!!! i love hearing about why people chose their instrument - what's your story?

good luck with choosing your uni preferences! teaching sounds great :-)) and don't worry about your trials, i absolutely flunked english and i'm still getting out of a rut with motivation because of it, but that's okay. here's to 4 weeks until school ends!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

1) I'm looking forward to reading the next update!
2) Nice thread name ;)

Still refreshing seeing a historian prefer maths over English 8)

Wonder where she got it from?

Do you play an instrument? I don't even really have a good story. I started playing in year 3 at my schools band, so with a bunch of other kids we had a go on all of the different instruments. The clarinet was the only one that I could even make a sound out of. I think I dropped the clarinet the first day I had it though-clumsy year 3 me. Really funny, because at the time, a lot of the kids just did band as a way to get out of classes and I didn't practice for a long time, but now I need (and want to) practice a lot more.
Thanks, I've only got marks back for two of my subjects at the moment, and while I was happy with one, I was a bit disappointed with the other.

maths is so so so so so so (add 100 more sos to the end of that) better than english. it's refreshing not having to write essays just for that one subject.

yep, i play the piano! what a coincidence though, i began music through school band as well. i definitely feel the practicing thing - i've abandoned piano a lot since year 11 and would love to get back into it but i just don't have the will to sit down and play a lot of the time.

that's okay about your trials. i did decent in 2 subjects, but the other 2 i've got back and the last one coming in on thursday don't look too great. you've still got time to fix everything up. :-))

Definitely agree with you!:) Every other subject I have to write at least 1, in some cases 3 essays so it's nicer to not have to do that.

Unpopular opinion: English was so much better than Maths in high school haha

Looking forward to seeing how the (short) remainder of your HSC year plays out Katie! No matter what happens, I hope that you can be proud of yourself for your achievements :)

Even though I'm not a STEM person and tend towards humanities and started as an English mod here, I still liked Methods more than English by a long way hahaha.

Will be reading every update with enthusiasm, Katie. ;D

23/8/17
Hey, back again :)
I've started getting trial marks back (Music, Hospitality, Legal & Extension) and i'm a bit disappointed at some of them. I was aiming for around 80% (wishing/hoping for 90ish), and have so far received mainly mid 70's. It annoys me because some of the subjects that I've put heaps of effort in isn't reflected through my marks. The two subjects that I have been coming first in all year, I dropped to second in my exams, which i'm hoping doesn't impact on my ranks. Incredibly happy for the girls who placed 1st though, they are both good friends of mine, and deserved their marks. I'm going to really need to study a lot more to get those higher marks to try to reach my goal atar of 90. I'm a bit nervous to get my other marks back (maths was a difficult exam, and I don't normally go well in English exams).

I'm also feeling really unmotivated at the moment and a bit drained. After the half yearlies, we went straight into a two week holiday-now I've put so much work and effort into my trials and going to school this week is exhausting. I haven't been able to study as much as I should be doing, but I want to give myself a rest (maybe to Sunday or so), so i'm able to recover.

My school musical starts on Friday which is really exciting. We have six shows (one on Friday, two on Saturday, and then the next Friday and Sat).
Should be practicing my clarinet so I'll leave you here (ahhh, music HSC is in 2 weeks!!).

Definitely take a rest I reckon Katie, you earned it! Plenty of time until the HSC - Focus on having a blast with your musical!! Enjoy it! :)

I got my trial marks back for English which were terrible, especially paper two. I wasn't expecting a really high mark, but this was pretty low and my rank wasn't great. I also had a double period of English this morning (106 minutes), which just felt really long and boring.
However, a huge thanks to Jamon, as my AOS essay increased from a 7/8 to an 11 out of 15-which was my best mark and I was really proud of it!  :D

This has brought up a lot of questions (understand this isn't a question thread but if anyone has any answers, that would be cool):
So, any teaching course requires a band 5 in English, and with my internal marks i'm not sure if that will happen. Is there English bridging courses at all unis? What do they cover? If I needed to do one, would I be able to go into a teaching course next year after doing one? If I don't get a band 5, would it be better to do a non teaching course such as Bachelor of arts/music and then do a degree in teaching afterwards? I still feel really lost about what degree/uni to choose and it needs to be in so soon.
I think i'm going to the UNSW open day next week so I may be able to ask a lot of questions there, and check out the uni (I've never been there before). Hopefully this will be helpful. :)

I got my formal invitation today, which is about a month away. I'm pretty excited but I still haven't brought a dress or shoes or anything which is slightly stressful.
I'm still not really sure what to post here, but this is really exciting (and I probably will update more often then once a week)  :)

Really glad I could be helpful Katie, well done! ;D keep working hard, let's get everything else up to an 11 and then head to 12 and 13, onwards and upwards ;D

I don't know a lot about the teaching requirements, someone else might, but definitely don't worry. There are always ways to get where you need to go. Definitely go to the UNSW Open Day, it will be really beneficial to chat to people about your options. What I'd suggest is perhaps a double degree, which might exempt you from the Band 5 requirement? This page seems to suggest that as an option (and might be a good way to combine teaching with another passion) ;D

Of course, you are assuming you won't get a Band 5 - Don't think that way! Never resign yourself to anything, aim for the stars, and if you don't quite get there you'll still be on the moon - Or however the saying goes ;)

Yeah, I'm going to do a lot more practice essays (although I hate it), to try and get everything up! I might try and redo some of my trial essays and post them for feedback next week sometime. :)

Thanks for the link! I'm going to need to do some more research on the weekend but that website looks pretty helpful. :) Will go to the UNSW open day (luckily I'm not working)! Some of the stuff they have on sounds really useful and I'll be able to ask a lot of questions.

Coincidentally, this is one of my yearbook quotes.
"Shoot for the moon, even if you miss you'll land among the stars." Should probably start listening to it.
The other one was "Music can change the world because it can change people"-Bono (Don't listen to a lot of U2 but I like this quote)

Celebratory post!
I got a really good mark in maths (92% scaled, 2nd or 3rd), that really surprised me as it was a hard test!
So happy my work paid off! :D

Yesss! Hang on to this feeling and turn it into motivation to get you through the HSC. The feeling of success, I find, is very addictive, so remember this moment so you can strive to have it again! :)

Atar Notes reminded me today that there is only 50 days left until the HSC!! I wasn't ready to be reminded of this (I didn't really realise that it was so soon). I'm kinda excited, happy and nervous.
Just had another quick look at my exam timetable and it's not fantastic (4 exams in the second week  :'( ), although it is a lot nicer then trials:

I had my school musical on Friday and Saturday. The singing was really good as everybody had been practicing for the majority of the year. When I wasn't playing, I had a great seat to watch the musical from the orchestra pit. I've had the songs stuck in my head all day today!

29/8/17
- We had a year meeting in the morning to talk about UAC applications and how to apply. We also had someone from Western Sydney uni to talk to us (it is the closest uni to my school). Although I don't want to go to Western Sydney uni, it looked like it had some good facilities and the talk brought up some new ideas. I also decided to research some scholarships that night and may apply for some soon (once I actually decide what courses to study) although I'm unsure of if I would actually get any.
- My English teacher has started doing classes for us doing sport (as we don't have to do sport anymore) and it was really good/productive. We broke down an essay question on Hamlet and worked on starting an intro for it. I'm going to try and get this essay done soonish.

30/8/17
This is my longest school days of the week (8:30-5:15) because of extension. Normally my school has 6 periods a day that are 53 minutes long and also has an A and a B week. Wednesday is probably my favourite day this week because I have double Ancient, extension, music and no English.
Legal (double period):
We had a police prosecutor come to talk to us about domestic violence. This links with both the family and crime topics and was really interesting (although also some of the cases she described were sad). She also went through how the topic relates to the themes and challenges section of the course which was really good for our essay writing. People also were able to ask questions and I got to write about 4 pages of notes.

Ancient (double period):
We’re studying Agrippina at the moment and are about halfway through the third main dot point (Career). We got through a lot of content today. We covered her marriage to Claudius, when she promoted Nero over Britannicus, honours/titles, image/status, removal of perceived threats and historians interpretations of her (including if she murdered Claudius). I’m almost sick of Powerpoints at the moment though (it’s all we’ve done in Ancient all year).

Lunch:
I had a meeting with our principal today which went for around 15 minutes. He’s been doing meetings with everybody in my year throughout this year. I think that there’s not a lot of point now though-it was helpful but may have been better earlier on in the year (as one of the questions was how the school could help us which isn’t too useful now as we only have 3 weeks). I ended up answering ‘I don’t know’ to about three of his questions.

Music:
Practice, practice,practice
I had to cut about a minute from two of my pieces (which was just less than a page). I still find the cuts a bit weird because I'm not used to them and I'm so annoyed that I had to cut so much because I had practiced it heaps.

Maths:
We had a catch up lesson today, however I was pretty unproductive (and tired for some reason). We have almost finished our last topic (non-linear functions-mainly graphs) so we should have a lot of lessons to revise before the term ends.

Extension history:
We studied the concept of Big History today, which looks at the history of the world from the Big Bang (and goes to the future). It's a newer concept but is supported by John Green and Bill Gates. It was really interesting but included a lot of science stuff (and I'm not really into science). We then did some exam skills and looked at finding the main ideas from sources. By the end of the class we were really tired and our conversations were getting off track.

Really excited to see some of you guys at the UNSW open day!! :D
Realised that this is actually really long-well, I guess I'll blame my procrastination, but it's fun to be able to write.:)

Thanks, I think I may apply for some but i'm not too sure yet.
Yeah, it's a really long day. How long are your school periods? I would love to have a 2 period day! I don't have any study periods either, but don't think I would be productive during them.
I'm actually thinking of skipping one of my musical performances for the open day (was really conflicted when I realised they were on the same day). My school does six performances so I think it should be ok if I miss one (theres another clarinet in the orchestra as well). However, i'm not too sure how my music teacher (also orchestra conductor) would react. Need to tell her tomorrow.
We should definitely set a time and place for all the AN people to meet. Would love to see everybody! :D

WOOHOO!!! I think we should meet afterwards around 4 :)

I woke up early to take an 8am train to the city to go to the UNSW open day. I ended up leaving Central from the wrong exit and got completely lost trying to find my way to the bus (It wasn't even that hard but I was blindly following google maps and it led me on a one hour detour which left me pretty stressed). There was such a huge line up for the free bus from Central as well. By the time I actually made my way to the uni it was 10:30 and I missed the history lecture.

It was really informative and I got to ask questions about the courses that I am looking at. Except one of my major questions about teaching, the guy couldn't answer (and the head wasn't there) which was slightly annoying. I also went to some of the music lectures and they had a course overview which helped me know the structure and what is in the course. However, it really didn't clear up what courses I want to do next year-in a way i'd like to be able to do three courses in depth (music, history and teaching) which just isn't possible. I'm going to have to choose what to do (and what to leave out) soon.

Probably the best part of the open day was being able to meet some amazingly friendly people from AN (fantasticbeasts3, Jess, Rui, and E6P). I seriously can't wait until we have a state AN meet-up because I want to be able meet more of you! :D

My school musical finally finished last night. I think that it was probably the best show as everybody had heaps of energy and was so excited on the stage. Its a bit sad to be finished but in a way i'm sick of the songs. My siblings were at the after party for the musical until 11:30 so I didn't get to go home until about 12:15ish (so I had a huge sleep in this morning).

Congrats on finishing the musical!! And sounds like UNSW Open Day was very informative - Don't worry, still plenty of time to figure out the answers to those niggling questions :)

Yep! This needs to happen sometime soon! (You guys are the first bunch of people that I've seriously wanted to go interstate to meet :D ).

Today I had my soundcheck for my music HSC tomorrow! Yep, this time tomorrow I would have finished 70% of my external marks for music which will be amazing! I'm both excited and really nervous. For those who don't do music exams, it's basically only me, my piano accompaniment and the marker in the room. I'm having someone accompany me on the piano for all of my pieces and today we played through my pieces about 2-3 times.

It's pretty cool how far i've come with the pieces (especially how considering when I first got some of them I thought they looked so hard i'd never be able to play them well-especially the Duo Concentant). I've been practicing most of these pieces since January so I know them really well now, and am almost sick of them in a way (although I do like them).
I'm really hoping that I don't stuff up anything during the performance tomorrow! :)

good luck for music tomorrow!!! hope everything goes well - you've obviously prepared a lot :-) i get what you mean about being sick of those pieces after a while, you just play them over and over and over again and they just get sooooo boring. how many performances are you doing (i know someone who's doing 4; others doing 2, split with 2 compositions)

Thanks! :D Definitely-they are pretty much the only pieces I've focussed on for the entire year (and are still not perfect) so I can't wait to get something new! I'm doing 4 performances (so 20 minutes all up!). :)

oooh 4 pieces over the whole year doesn't seem like fun hahahah. whatever happens, happens tomorrow and if you know you've prepared as much as possible you'll be fine :-) do you do the 4 performances consecutively? or does someone go in after you've done, say, your first and second piece, then go back in after?

Yeah, you do them almost one after the other (with little breaks in between when the marker is doing feedback and writing and stuff). So, by the end of my performance for trials I was so tired.

GOOD LUCK!!!!!!11111111111 GOOOODJHGSD LUCKKAAGHA I HOPE YOU DO SWELLLLL HAVE A GOOD BREAK LEG OR WHATEVER THEY USUALLY SAYY~~~ (seriously though, I will pray for you if that is what it takes :P)
Thanks so much!! (Two of my siblings have actually just recovered from broken arms-so I laugh whenever this expression is used atm). Are you religious (if so, praying would be amazing, but definitely up to you!)?

I got two!! I think that's the minimum, if you get unlucky there will be a senior marker there overseeing the other two to make sure they are doing things fairly ;D

They are just teachers remember! They have no special powers. They'll be keen to see a cool performance just like anyone else would be :)

Hahah no, I'm not religious. I should've used a different expression there to avoid the confusion, but I will nevertheless wish you all the best! ;)

Today I had my music exam so classes weren't compulsory for us (so I only went to Ancient and Extension).

Ancient: Today we finished our last ever Ancient PowerPoint (and the Agrippina topic). From now on were just doing revision for the topics. We are having an Ancient party next week and our teachers making an Ancient themed escape room which should be really fun.

Music: I am so relived that this is over! It's an amazing feeling! There was two examiners in the room and they were friendly. One of them tried to say a couple of jokes, which may have been funnier if I wasn't so nervous. I think that my first two pieces were pretty good but the other two weren't as great (I'd probably played them better). I think that I got slightly tired during the third piece and started making some more mistakes. However, overall I think it was a good performance. It's really annoying how I will never really get any marks or feedback from today.

Extension history: Todays my second last class of extension ever. We did a lot of revision and study skills stuff. We worked on breaking down the sources, and writing mini essay plans. I also won a JFK kahoot! Next week we are having a class party with lots of food, and fun revision stuff such as quizlets and kahoot.

You can actually request your marks for the performances, but it costs money :(

Thanks, feels great! JFK's pretty cool although I never did the public and private option. Did you study him when you did extension?
Can't believe there is just over two weeks left of school! I still have classes for the whole of next week and then the Monday and half of the Tuesday of the week afterwards. Week 9 is mainly fun stuff though (class parties, staff v. students soccer match, graduation, formal, etc.) :D!
Hope you have an amazing end of term aswell!

This morning we received our interim reports which included our marks and ranks. We hadn't seen our full ranks yet so I was really happy with extension (1st/7), maths (2nd/50) and hospitality (2nd/11). However I need to work on English which was 24/33. Our teachers also included comments on what we do to improve from now until HSC which look helpful and that I should try and start to follow soon. I think that I should start a study plan/timetable for now until HSC but I'm a bit worried that I won't follow it well.

Formal dress update: So today, I finally decided on my formal dress. I guess it's pretty late seeing that the formal is in just over two weeks but 1. I am really indecisive, and 2. I hate clothes shopping. I'm borrowing one of my Girls Brigade's leaders dresses (she let me try on 6 and this one fits really well).
It's a short purple dress and the majority of my year are wearing longer dresses.
My dress
This is a picture of it. (obviously not me). (https://d1vtt0qc4mdzli.cloudfront.net/product_image/large/122085/8611S.jpg)

Today, my hospitality class catered for an event the school was hosting for VA teachers. This counted for 5 hours of work placement (still have 6 hrs left) and we catered for around 30 people.
For morning tea we made slices (lemon, raspberry), chocolate fudge, mini muffins and fruit/cheese platters.
For lunch we made mixed sandwiches, sausage rolls and pizza pinwheels.
Afterwards there was heaps of leftovers so we got to eat some!
We then had to do a lot of cleaning and I was on the dishwasher which was boring. By the end of the day, my feet were sore (as we had to walk from our classroom to the area they were eating with the food) and I was pretty tired.
I have about four periods of class work to catch up on for today (however I think some was just revision).

I'm still feeling really unmotivated to study since trials which is really annoying.
I want to try to at least rewrite one of my English essays from the trials (Paper two) on the weekend and may post it for feedback. I need to start doing more past papers for all of my subjects really.

You have heaps more people in Advanced English then my year! Most other subjects I can write essays ok, but English is just terrible.
I'm not great at English exams but I especially disliked paper 2 (Three essays in two hours is a lot!)
I need to do a lot more studying for English but it is my least favourite subject and I'm not a huge fan of writing English essays or most of my texts (especially The Art of Travel).

I started writing a Hamlet essay this morning and am only on the third paragraph after about an hour, and I was planning to finish it tonight. A lot of that time was spent procrastinating though.

Yeah I feel the same, my drama and geo essays are pretty good but English is so terrible in comparison. Maybe it's because the only module I have ok notes for is mod A (I love Gatsby!) but Hamlet and Art Of Travel are a trek and a half. At least you got somthing done though, unlike me who is using my current headache as a reason to take the night off.

13/9/17
Another long school day (7:30-5:15)
Before school (canteen workplacement): To increase my workplacement hours for hospitality I have been working in the canteen some mornings before school (7:30-8:40). Today, I made and cooked the choc chip muffins, caesar salads and trayed the chicken tenders.

Legal (double period): We have almost finished our last topic (family law). Today we looked at surrogacy and birth control. It was interesting but I think we are moving really fast through the course at the moment so we can try to get it all finished which is annoying because we aren't going into as much detail at times.

Ancient (double period): Today we had a surprise birthday party for our Ancient teacher. We decorated the room during recess with purple (his favourite colour) decorations and baloons. To make sure that he wouldn’t come into the room, one of the girls in our class went to talk to him. She told him that because she was doing 13 units her mum wanted her to drop Ancient. We all felt a bit bad, because our teacher looked sad but he was fine once he knew it wasn’t true. His reaction once we surprised him was really nice as he so happy and didn’t really expect us to do it. We all had party hats, party poppers, and heaps of party food (cake, lollies, chocolate, chips, soft drink).

We all played an Ancient themed escape room. The story was that our teacher had been shot and we had to unlock a suitcase where there would be a vial of medicine to save him. We had to solve some Ancient themed puzzles on the Julio Claudians, Agrippina and Pompeii to unlock the box. There were also clues that our teacher had hidden around the room such as in invisible ink on a picture, behind a shield or in a history book. Once we finally unlocked the box, we realised there was still another box to unlock and puzzles to be done for Sparta. Once we did those, we found a key and unlocked the box to find a vial of medicine (caramel syrup) and a picture of the class. We also took a few more class pictures. It was a really fun class, and although it isn’t our last yet I’m going to be really sad when Ancient finishes.

Lunch: Today was the first of our staff vs students sport matches (we also have volleyball on Friday and soccer on Tuesday). It was netball today and the students won 4-3. I didn’t actually play (I don’t do sport), but it was really fun to watch. It was great to see some of the teachers getting involved, and watching them and our year play.

Music: As part of the graduation assembly, the music class traditionally plays a song or a mashup of songs. Our class is pretty unorganised and is mainly still trying to choose songs to play and find chords for them. I’m not sure if I will actually play in this because most of the songs they are thinking of are rock songs that don’t really work with a clarinet (majority of my class plays piano, guitar and drums). We’re pretty unproductive at the moment and i’m not too sure if the performance will actually work out well as we haven’t practised it a lot and the graduation is next Thursday.

Maths: We were all pretty tired, hot and not bothered today in maths. We were given the 2014 specimen HSC multiple choice to do in class, but I didn’t really even finish it.

Extension history: Today was our last ever lesson! We had a bit of a party (with lots of food!) and played a lot of fun revision activities. We played kahoot (I won a lot of these!), celebrity heads (with historians), quizlet live (for purposes of historians and the key terms) and Jeopardy (for JFK and What is history?-My team won!).

Today was my last ever full day of classes (& last Maths, English and Bible class)!

PC (Pastoral care/roll call): Today one of the year 7 girls PC class gave everyone in yr 12 a mini survival pack. Mine was in a brown paper bag and was decorated with my name in the middle and lots of different coloured circles. In the corner they wrote 'hang in there' and it looked like they had put effort into it and it was so cute. In it there was bubble wrap, bubbles, a lollipop, flake, balloon, bookmark (laminated with my name, it's meaning and a bible verse). It was something that the girls in my PC really appreciated and we were going to go to their room to say thanks but the bell went for class so we may go tomorrow. Also our last PC which is really sad because I love having mornings talking to the girls of my PC and my teacher is so amazingly friendly.

Legal: The only class today where we really did work. We looked through two of the exemplar essays for family law from last year and highlighted their use of evidence (cases/stats/laws/media) and their judgements.

English: We had a class party today and everybody brought in lollies, chocolates and drinks. Our teacher brought in a red velvet cake and we lit candles. We also gave our teacher her present, which was some flowers and a photo frame with a picture of our class acting like Maria from Metropolis. Although I don't love English it's still sad that this is our last lesson (besides one in the holidays).

Maths: Our teacher wasn't at school today as she was sick. We took a few class photos and selfies. We then had a combined maths party with around 3 other maths classes. We had heaps of food, were listening to music and the boys were dancing.

Hospitality: Today, me and one of the other girls in our class worked in the canteen. I made muffins, jelly, cut salad ingredients and trayed the chicken tenders.
I have now finished all of my work placement hours!

Tomorrow I have a year 12 staff/students breakfast in the morning, graduation practice, 3 more classes, the staff v students soccer match and a year 12 movie night. On Thursday morning we have our graduation and on Friday we have the formal.

Graduation 🎓🎓
We had to go to school at 9:45 and sat and talked and took photos until the graduation started at 10:30.
At 10:30, we all walked in a line into the hall in our PC groups to our chairs on the side of the hall while the music was playing. I was a mix of nerves and excitement.

We had addresses from our Principal, Year Advisors and Captains. While they were long and are usually really boring, we found them more interesting because they were about our year :).

Our music class played a mash up of four pieces today. We played hey ya, Africa, All Star and love story. It ended up really good despite how we didn't have heaps of practice. Our year was clapping to the beat and singing/dancing during it, which was great and I think they enjoyed it. :D

All the girls walked up on the stage after the performance in our PC classes. When they called my name (I was so surprised they pronounced it correctly-they always pronounce it wrong), they also announced that I had done Mates (a program where I was paired with a primary kid and met them once a week during lunchtimes), and that I got first in extension. The principal shook hands with me and gave me my portfolio and I also hugged my PC teacher and then lined up on the stage. We got graduation portfolios which had certificates, and a little booklet where some of my teachers (17!) had wrote warm fuzzies in. They wrote some really nice messages and bible passages that are great to read.

We had kindergarten and year six sing a song for us and they were so cute. The kindergartens one was based off the melodies from the musical and called ‘Super Dupa are our buddies!’ We also had a huge photo slideshow which showed photos from both primary and high school. I had a couple of pictures in it, one from year 7 and a some more of yr 11-12.

At the end of the graduation all the teachers did a guard of honour. We were able to hug/handshake all of our teachers and it was a really nice thing to be able to do. It’s a bittersweet feeling because while I’m so happy school is over I also really love my teachers and friends.

Afterwards we all took photos together and then we had a morning tea in the hall for all of year 12 and our parents. Year 9 food tech and year 11 hospitality catered which was something that I had done in yrs 9 & 11. We took a lot of photos and talked with my friends.

My Ancient teacher also emailed Mary Beard the other day and got two replies! Mary Beard is a historian that my class and teacher love! In one of her replies she congratulated us for graduating and wished us good luck which was cool.

This afternoon I got my nails done for formal (2nd time ever I have had my nails done-last time was yr 6). They are a light pink, kinda natural colour. I’m still not sure what to do with my hair and I’m getting it done tomorrow morning. I’m pretty excited for formal-we are meeting at the botanical gardens to take photos and then my groups organised a limo to take us to the formal. It should be fun!  ;D

I also brought a weekly planner whiteboard and whiteboard markers from K-mart. I’ve been wanting to buy a whiteboard for ages and haven’t really gotten around to it until today. Should be good for organising everything.

So excited to see some of you at the meetup on Monday! Can’t wait-4 days left!  ;D

I finally put in my UAC application tonight (A little late: 4 days before the processing charge increases). This has been something I’ve been stressing over so I’m glad that I’ve been able to choose courses that I am happy with. :)

At the moment they are:
1.   Bachelor of Music/Bachelor of Education (secondary): UNSW
2.   Bachelor of Music (Music education): USyd
3.   Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education (Secondary):UNSW
4.   Bachelor of education/Bachelor of Arts: USyd
5.   Bachelor of Arts/Bachelor of Education: Macquarie

With the Bachelor of Arts courses I think I would be either majoring/minoring in history or music. I’m pretty excited for uni at the moment-I’ve been researching some of the units that I may be able to do and they sound really interesting!

I still need to fill in audition forms, write a teaching statement (for USyd) and pay for UAC and Usyd auditions.

25/9/17
Had a really good time at the NSW AN meetup. Was great to finally meet everyone! :D

Didn’t do a whole lot of studying today. Really want to start studying a lot more this week because todays the first day of holidays (not that we have a proper holiday or anything). I want to try to start doing more practice papers-I would love to be able to get one done for all of my subjects by the end of the week (will end up being about 8 ) and hopefully even more next week (as well as other study).

Just finished watching all of Emily’s English revision videos. Found them really helpful/interesting! Thanks heaps Emily! :D Looking forward to the other videos! :)

Tomorrow I have a hospitality study day at school (although I’m not too sure how many people will turn up). On Wednesday I have a legal study day in the morning and a concert (The Vamps) that night which I’m really excited about! I also have an English study day on Friday and a maths one next week.

Haven’t really updated for a while …
I’ve been busy studying. I’ve been doing essay plans, mind maps, detail tables, flashcards and some past papers. I was putting off essays a bit throughout the holidays so I need to get more on top of it this week and next (as well as more past papers).

I’ve gotten into doing essay plans on my white board during the holidays (especially for Legal and Ancient but also for English quotes). I think at the moment it’s tricking me into studying because it’s not the normal pen and paper and I have heaps of different colours. I’ve included a picture of one of my favourite one’s (on law reform):
My legal mind map!
The pictures really blurry, but still looks ok.
I’ve realised there’s still so much more content I need to work on memorising and revising. I need to know so many dates, quotes, archaeological evidence, legislation and media. Also, because I have 8 exams I feel like I’m not studying for everything evenly and there are some subjects that I need to study a lot more for.

Procrastination has been my worst enemy at the moment. I’m doing it so much, even right now! It doesn’t help that half the time studying feels really boring (even though I like my subjects).

Apart from studying, in the holidays I went to The Vamps concert with my sister (really good, first ever time in a most pit, we were so close), to the shops and also to the beach on the weekend (had the best Greek souvlaki). I also had a few study days at school which were pretty helpful (got to see my friends, did some past papers and revision).

Today I did a practise essay for Extension (section 1), an essay on Law reform for legal and worked on memorising dates for Julio Claudians for Ancient. Really need to work on English and music tomorrow (they are my only exams next week)- can’t believe there’s only 7 days left! Part of me can’t wait until this is over.

Might go into school sometime this week to study and hand in some essays to my teachers for feedback. But we were emailed today saying that we come in we still need to wear our uniform.

Hope all of the new year 12’s had a great day today! (Feel’s weird saying that!)
I hope study is going ok for everyone! Good luck guys-not too long now!

Really enjoyed your update, Katie! :D

Sounds like your prep for exams is going pretty well. I love that you're using your whiteboard - I honestly think whiteboards were the best revision tool I used during year 12.

With procrastination (feel your pain), maybe Brenden's wisdom might be of use:
Quote from: brenden
As for avoiding procrastination… I kind of just embrace it? I don’t feel bad for procrastinating. I just do what I want and get it out of my system, then when I’ve not-done-something for so long that I genuinely need to get on it or I’m fucked, I usually work uninterrupted hahahaha. If I don't want to procrastinate, I don't procrastinate. If I want to procrastinate, I do it until I don't want to anymore. The problem wth people asking "how do I stop procrastinating" is they are actually asking, "How do I stop procrastinating when I want to procrastinate?" and I guess my solution is just... don't. Instead, work on not wanting to procrastinate.

We had to do this too - honestly, I didn't mind it, because wearing school uniform put me into the work mindset so I felt like I was more likely to knuckle down and focus. I was definitely glad we had to wear uniform for exams - even if we had the choice to wear casual clothes, I think I probably would have worn uniform haha.

Wishing you all the luck in the world for your upcoming exams! ;D

I've actually had a really productive two days:
- Wrote a discovery essay with the 2016 HSC question
- One of the comprehension part of Paper 1
- Worked on some essay plans for Sparta. I have now done essay plans for all HSC questions from 2011-2016! I'm going to have to turn some of these into essays soon but I also really need to work on the Julio Claudian and Agrippina sections as well.
- Did one of the AN topic tests for maths

11/10/17
- I got some feedback from Jamon on my mod C essay this morning! It left me feeling more confident however there are a few things I need to work on and fix up (hopefully tomorrow).
- I also need to work on coming up with a good creative because I always find it really difficult to come up with great original ideas and then to write it. (Should have done a proper one ages ago-will probably end up doing something history based)
- I wrote some of my mod C quotes on my whiteboard today so hopefully I'll know them by Tuesday. I may need to record myself saying them because that normally works really well.
- Listened to some music and picked some concepts to analyse for aural for music (even though I got pretty distracted by the lyrics)
- I did the 2016 Hospitality HSC paper (I've now done from 2014-2016). We got the majority of this paper for trials so it was good to look over it and see how I have improved.
- I worked on my Agrippina detail and interpretation tables. Hopefully will finish that soon as I need to do a lot more essays for Ancient.
- I think I'm coming down with a cold (I've got a running nose, headaches.). I'm so scared that I'll be sick for the HSC (even though I'm not even that bad now).

Really enjoyed your update, Katie! :D

I'm also so glad that we have to wear our uniform for exams-I don't think I would focus as well in other clothes (and it would be so much easier in the mornings not having to choose what outfit to wear).

Not too long now! Tomorrow I have two different exams (English Paper 1 and Music)!
This weekend I mainly worked on getting together and working on all my quotes, working on some of my essays and making essay plans. I’m going to try and memorise my discovery essay and mould it to the question tomorrow (listening to a recording of it now :) )

Good luck to everybody for tomorrow! Sending you all internet hugs :D. Try to stay calm during the exam and don’t stress too much! I know all of your hard work will pay off!  ;D

3 down, 5 to go!
So incredibly glad that English is finally over, the feeling is amazing! :D
I never need to study or read any of these texts again or write any English essays.

My thoughts on the exams:
Paper One: Overall, I think I went ok for the short answers and the essay but I’m not too sure. My creative was terrible though-I made it up on the spot so it wasn’t heaps well written. After our exam, our English teachers gave us ice-cream cones (and after paper 2 we got muffins/lamingtons and pastries)!! :D

Music: I think I went ok for this. I found the first two pieces good but the last two were fairly hard. My class has done heaps of practise so hopefully we all go really well! :)

Paper Two: My Hamlet essay was terrible-I wrote an entire paragraph that probably doesn’t even relate to the question :(. However mod A was good and I could write heaps and mod C was also ok.

I don’t have any more exams for the week (except there’s four next week)! Good luck to everyone with exams this week! Hope you all go really well!  ;D

5 done, only 3 to go!!

Thoughts on my exams so far this week:
Maths: I found the exam ok, but some of the multiple choice and short answers at the end were a bit hard. Was hoping for a band 6 but not sure.

Ancient: Still so surprised I got all of the multiple choice right (guessed a few)!!  I think most of the parts were good except for the Julio-Claudian section. I forgot all of my detail and quotes and it was a really short essay. Hoping, that I did well in all of the other sections to balance this out.

Tomorrow I have Extension, on Friday I have hospitality and next Thursday I have legal (which I haven’t studied for too much yet). Extension and Hospitality are both afternoon exams from 1:55-4pm. I’m really hoping they don’t ask for 2 areas of debate in the case study tomorrow because I only know one really well (and the others generally). Might have to read over it tomorrow morning. I hope the exam isn’t too bad tomorrow because I want to go well.

I got the date for my USyd audition yesterday (1st of December) which is kinda scary because it is so close. I’m going to play two of my HSC pieces for it but I’m also expected to know all of the major and minor scales (I find it dreadfully difficult to memorise scales). I also need to work out my accompaniment and practice with them soon. For UNSW, it is an online musicianship test and audition so I’ll have to put that together after HSC as well.

Good luck everybody!!!! Hope everything is going well for you!!   ;D

My HSC is over and the feeling is absolutely amazing!!  ;D
All I have to do left is bring in one more library book (lost somewhere in my room) and organise my exit interview.

Thoughts on my final exams:
History Extension: Loved the questions. I had heaps of things to talk about and think that my essays went well. However, I forgot a few interpretations for section 2.

Hospitality: The questions are always so weirdly worded. There was also a 3-mark question on something I don’t remember covering in class (or if we did it was really quickly) which put me off. I think most of the rest was ok though. We also had three people leave halfway through the exam which was really distracting. I studied quite a bit for it and I’m not sure if I went as well as I wanted to.

Legal: Thought the questions today were quite nice. Really happy with crime and my consumer essay. Think my family essay wasn’t as strong but I was kind of expecting it. Made up a few cases and media and muddled up one of my legislations but I think it went ok.

Brought John Green’s new book today so hopefully I’ll read that tonight!
So happy it’s all over! Looking forward to the sleep ins!

Good luck to those still doing HSC exams and to those in VCE just starting yours!  ;D

I haven't had too many people leave! I don't think my school even really allows it! But we had three people leave for hopso and one today! I was only halfway through the Hospitality paper as well so they definitely hadn't finished it. It was so distracting and annoying! :(
We had one person leave today and a few people were really annoyed at him! 9 is so much though!

Congrats!!

Hey that exact same thing happened in my Legal Studies exam, so annoying! It was a class of 19 and since I was at the front I couldn't see anyone. I was writing all the way up to the last minute so I basically didn't take my eyes of the paper for the whole 3 hours. Once we were organising our consent forms and everything, I looked around and realised there were only FIVE people left in the room. Like what the heck? I heard later after the exam that people were leaving 2 hours into the paper, so that's such a disappointment, especially with all the seminars and notes I tried giving to help push up the cohort!

Anyway, that's all in the past so hopefully it all goes well for us both. Congratulations on finishing the HSC! I bet you smashed it :)

I uploaded my performance audition to the dropbox for UNSW today ;D!! The process was one of the most stressful things but I’m so happy it’s all done!

Just got my Con audition next Friday (still have to memorise heaps of scales) and then have to wait until results and atar release.

I’ve got schoolies tomorrow which I’m really excited about! We’re going to Jervis Bay for 6 days. Almost finished packing now!  :D

Schoolies was so great!!  :D There was 8 of us and we had heaps of fun!

We did a lot of swimming, went to the beach, bushwalking and ate a lot of food (we had heaps of leftovers!). The beach was so beautiful with clear water and white sand and the weather was almost always sunny (the only time it rained it was at night). We went to both Hyams beach and Moona Moona Beach and there was a bay opposite the house.

We went night swimming one night in the houses pool with glowsticks and had a campfire another night with smores (chocolate, biscuits and marshmallows). We also watched movies most nights. We went to bed really late every night and then slept in. We had no fights or arguments (even small) for the entire trip and it was a really nice place!

I got badly sunburnt on Friday at the beach especially on my shoulders and was hurting on the weekend and it’s starting to peel now.

I’ve spoiled a few pictures of the beach:

I have my audition for the conservatorium tomorrow afternoon! I need to play two pieces and some scales. My pieces sound good as they were my HSC pieces. I am playing these with piano accompaniment. I’m a bit nervous about my scales because I’m meant to know all major and minor scales (which is over 35 scales) and some of them aren’t very well memorised yet.

Tomorrow night I’m going to the Shawn Mendes concert with my sister which I’m really excited about!!  ;D

Got an email today saying that my UNSW audition was successful!! As long as I get an atar of 80+ I will be accepted into the course! Such an amazing feeling!  :D

Unfortunately, wasn’t accepted into the Con but there would have been heaps of amazing people auditioning and am really excited to (hopefully) go to UNSW anyway.

7 days till atars come out-so scary!

Got my braces off today which is a really weird feeling, but so good! :)

Results release is so stressful!!
Overall really happy with some of my marks but disappointed with a few others.
HSC Marks
Ancient: 81 (wanted a little higher but really happy I got a b5)
English (Advanced): 77 (actually pretty happy with this, improved so much since trials! Thanks Jamon/Elyse for reading all my essays! Annoying that it's 3 off a b5 though)
History Extension: 37 (Was expecting a lot higher, really disappointed considering I put more effort into this then most of my higher marked subjects.)
Hospitality: 86
Legal: 84 (So happy I got 86 for the exam!!)
General Maths: 87 (Was expecting a b6, little disappointed but still happy with the mark)
Music: 77 (little disappointed, not too surprised though)

My Atar ended up being 79.7 which I was pretty disappointed with seeing that I put heaps of effort into all my subjects. However it was really ironic that my cousin got almost the exact same atar as me 79.3!).

However, I checked my emails afterwards to see that I had received guaranteed entry to my first preference at UNSW!!! (lucky I had three bonus points for history :) ) I’m so excited and happy that I made it in!!  ;D
(https://i.imgur.com/ZDQnrgT.png)

Really my atar doesn’t even matter now!

Is anyone else going to the UNSW info day tomorrow? I’m thinking of going to ask a few questions. If anyones coming tell me and we’ll try to meet up!
