Title: Vce engineering without science or math?
Post by: Future Engineer on September 23, 2019, 09:14:47 pm
How do I get too engineering at university without science or math?
Reason: I hate science

What type of engineering are u thinking of? If it's software/IT, then you MIGHT be able to get away with it.

If you're not taking any science or math, then why do u want to study engineering? Engineering is literally all science and math...

For software/IT/comp eng, you'd be able to get away with not doing science but the math is an absolute must.

Engineering in essence is an application of Math and Science. Math forms the language of everything you will learn in Engineering and as said above, you can get away with not doing Science, but Maths is essential. Especially in uni, at least in UNSW they go through material really fast in first year Math courses. Your expected to pick up things quickly and students who have done the lower level math courses struggle.

Ouch, I don't like science that much. I am probably picking the wrong career.

Yeh I wouldn't recommend you pursue a career in engineering if you hate science and aren't taking any math. You'll get rekd and will hate it.

That is correct, I will try to find something else.

What aspects of engineering do you like? And what are your strengths and interests, if science isn’t your thing? Perhaps we can start the career conversation from there and suggest a direction more suitable for you. :)

P.S. If we do go in this direction, I’ll ask a fellow mod to move this thread to a more appropriate board.

Tbh I have not decided that yet, but I am certain all engineering will need at least some math/science.

I think you're severely underestimating what engineering involves. To be clear, engineering isn't fixing cars and whatnot, and it's not construction either. Engineering won't need at least some math/science, it will need A TON of math/science.

Yep what Blyatman said.

In videos and stuff they project people fooling around with robots and different structures with little emphasis on the theory they learnt behind it in order to build it. Like for example why does the rotor of a robot rotate? Oh well a torque is applied which leads to a bunch of Physics and Math that you are very much required to learn

Hey guys I picked my vce subjects already they are: bus man, English, methods, chem, bio and history revolutions. So can I still do engineering at uni without physics or spesh as they are a vital component to engineering

What uni are you thinking of? And what branch of engineering?

Anway seeing as youre still doing methods and 2 sciences I reckon you'll be fine in terms of prereqs.

That is correct in terms of prerequisites I am all set, but I am still uncertain of the engineering that I want to do and also as mentioned before I am not sure if not doing physics or spesh will drag me down later on.

If it's not a prerequisite, you don't need to worry. Unis like Monash have units which are equivalent to spesh 3/4 and physics 3/4 which you can do in 1st year to catch up. The only downside is you might find out that you don't like the subjects after you've already chosen to study engineering.
