I would like to know this as well.

My first car is a Ford G6 limited edition, it's my dad's old car but ever since he bought his 300k SLK he barely uses it anymore.

Going to get a GTR in the future though maybe when I'm off my P's ^__^

Your parents are so generous! Mine said that getting into a good university should be enough of an incentive for me to study hard  :-\

I'm saving up for a Holden VE Commodore SV6 sedan. I'm hoping to spend around 15-20k on it, which I should be able to make this year because I'm not going to university until 2014 :) It looks like this:
http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/holden-commodore-2007-13732163?base=&vertical=Car&cr=8&eapi=2&__N=1216%20903%204294965857%204294965745%201247%201282%201252%201246&num=15&silo=Stock&Range=Year%3a2006%2c2009

At the moment, I don't own any car, but my parents are temporarily letting me and my brother use their VT Commodore, which looks like this:

Lol my dad's work car is an XR6 and I've driven it a few times  8) But tbh, I'm more of a Holden guy, especially since my grandpa spent most of his life working as a mechanical engineer for Holden. I have a lot of respect for that guy.

That's fair enough :) I find that the Falcons seems to have a smoother gearbox and engine. The newer ones have over 400NM of torque, so they can pull!

I really love the look of the SV6/SS Utes. In that grey colour as well :O

So I bought one myself  8)

2008 Ford Focus. Not as good as a golf, but it does the trick.

Thanks :) I think i will be getting a model that's between 1999 and 2004, the newer ones are way out of my budget lol and yes, i will make sure they are clear as possible :P
Would you happen to know what the steptronic feature is for BMWs? is it something to do with the car being both auto and manual?

Somewhere around 2002 is when they updated to the newer e46 design. You'll see, the headlights, curve upwards instead of down.

Old
(http://imgc.classistatic.com/cps/blnc/121105/650r1/73789g8_20.jpeg)

newer (really nice) esspecially the coupe version
(http://www.vortextuning.com/forum/image/wheels/VT908/VT908_G_E46_ZHP_3.jpg)

Steptronic is a fancy way of saying tiptronic.

Basically in an automatic car, the car changes the gears via computer control. This is when it's in Drive (D). For steptronic, you'd push the level thing to one of the sides, and if you push it either up or down, the computer will change the gear only when you push the lever.

thanks for that! :P
what would you say is the best model of the e46 and why? (excluding 05 and onwards)
i know that the newest year aren't necessarily the best ones e.g. some of the newer editions of the nissan skyline aren't as great as the old ones (in terms of their appearance)

I really don't know too much about them to recommend to you as such :) But I'd say, go for 2003+.

It's generally cheaper and it's near the end of the e46 model cycle so a lot of the small quality and reliability issues will be sorted. Plus, I'd definitely try to find a 330ci, I love the look of them, but they might not be in your budget.

Pretty much what you posted before, but with the newer revision.

Wait, why would you need 100k for an e46? They aren't too expensive anymore.. at least I don't think they are. At worst, it would be manageable.

because servicing an e46 or any other bmw is about 500-700 dollars and at the end of the day its just a high end 4 cyl corolla lol unless u get the 330i

parts will set u back alot too i guess... tbh a 318 or 320i is just a poor guys bimmer (really has no show off value) lol

To be honest, I doubt anyone would be doing dealer services for an e46 hahaha.

That's why you debadge a 318 and 320 hehhe, can't tell em apart..

I want an RX8 and trust me, they are a ticking time bomb apparently. The rotary engines in those can go very quick if not maintained properly. 5-10k to get that fixed as well!!

I think it's the appeal, class and the look of the car itself. Type R's appeal to a demographic, I guess that's what I'm getting at.

330i has a great engine apparently. I'm pretty sure it won wards best engine of the year for that category too!

I reckon a lot of people would laugh at me in an RX8, it might give the impression of a boy racers car. But it is in fact a very very capable machine. I personally couldn't care less about what other people think of my car :)

They sure are! Shame I probably won't get my license for another few years (in one year I've only done 20 hours -.-).

Don't give up hope! I had just over 50 hours at around the 5th of December last year and was like 'damn you 120 hours im never gonna get my license :'(' , and now I'm up to 126. It's possible!

My parents said if I dux my school this year they'd buy me a cheap second-hand Volkswagen Golf. I'm not sure if either occurrence will really happen, though. :P

and GOLFS ARE AWESOME :D (sorry just had to put that out there). Especially the diesel ones. The touchiness of their brakes/accelerator does take a while to get used to though, I'll admit that.

My sister had the biggest shitbox I have ever seen for her first car. It was a Ford Telstar that was literally as old as me (1994 model), and to go at a speed higher than 40 - 50km/h up a hill, you had to turn the air-conditioner or heater off.

Says the person who spent 35k on their first car..
why were you so regretful in buying yours, if you think it's such a great car?

The Honda Civic sports is a very nice car, and I'm not sure of the posters reasoning, but for $35K you can get ones that are quite a bit nicer. It depends on the person though - my sister absolutely loves hers, but I'm driving it at the moment and the sports suspension is driving me insane.

i was kinda forced into buying a car i had to get a new one i regret it because the first year depreciation on a new car is equal to the next 4- 5 following years lost like 12 - 13k on it already -.- :(

There is a certain something with buying a new car however. It certainly does make someone proud :) My parents bought a brand new Mitsubishi ASX, primarily, it hasn't really depreciate too much. There's something nice about signing the papers for a brand new car :)

If your not on a mortgage, been working on stable job for many years and got cash to burn then of course you'll get a new car. You got to enjoy these things in life.

Ideally, I would want to get a car around 5 years old. Once it gets around 10+ years old, it starts to develop problems, but a car <5 years old is usually too expensive.

Daddy bought me a new Lancer last year even thought I flopped VCE. I love my car, but I'm travelling about 60km 5 days a week and as a result I've done 18000 kms in less than a year. I'm thinking of keeping my car forever or at least 10-15 years, but I'm scared about ruining my car too early. I mean, I dont want it to become a bomb before it should you know, with overuse. Just something to think about- how much you'd end up using your car

A new lancer!!! Nice!

Mitsubishi's last year came with 10 year warranties so as long as you service it when you're supposed to, you should be fine :)

As with any car really, don't neglect maintenance. My parents typically did neglect it (although the refuse to believe so) and so the car has a lot of minor issues and some weird ones.. Service it, wash it, baby it :) Think about how much it helps you in your life :D

I really want to look at a polo GTI, but they're banned for P platers. I tried sending them an email, but I'm certain they'd just tell me to f off.. It's hardly unsafe though.. I think quoted 0-100 was like 8.2 or something? So it's hardly super fast in a straight line.

I just feel bad, getting an rx8 and not treating it as it should be. Putting speakers and subwoofers in it :/. I think I'll buy one for the the track later on! But no idea what to get now.. Having said that, I'll probably still get the 8 haha. I'd love an e92, I'd share it with dad and get a bike.

Polo GTI's aren't banned for P platers. My sister drives one. All you have to do is apply to vicroads to drive one (it takes like 5 minutes), wait a week and then receive a letter telling you that your application has been successful.

Pretty much the only time they'll ever decline your application is if your licence has been suspended or cancelled.

Was looking at some integras, both the newer ones and the dc5rs, but couldnt find one for a good price + maintenance is a killer for hondas especially old discontinued models.
Now I'm looking at some T86s, very good value for a very nice looking car. Gotta somehow workout a payment plan with my dad though and somehow pay off the 15k I would owe him.

This thread amuses me.
Buying a fancy car while you're still in uni is a complete and utter waste of money.
Either you're going to damage your car yourself, or someone else is going to crash into you.
No matter how awesome you think you are, it will happen.

To some people, cars are more than just a mode of transport, they can be a lifestyle in some cases! That's why we want "fancy" cars. :)

I get that some people just don't care about what they drive, as long as it gets them to where they want to be. But for people like me, mountain cruises, drive days and track days are a hobby we look forward to being able to do. We just enjoy driving our cars, and messing around with them!

Any car can be good, but some just some so characterless and boring. Not fun. :)

I used to be into cars and such a few years back. Then well, I guess I matured a little bit, in the sense other things became more important.

We'll see if you're still saying that in a few years time.

(I think I'll leave it at that)

Funny cause I only really developed an interest for cars after I got my P plates. I'll see if I'm still into fast cars when I get my full licence...

Well, my parents will be buying my car. It may cost no more to buy than a used 2009 Ford Falcon. It's just that there are a few risks associated with maintenance and reliability.

Once I get a stable part time job, I'll slowly start paying for the insurance as well. :) I will pay them back for the car of course. And no, I ain't moving out till I'm married :P

I will probably regret saying this because I'll get called out for being spoilt. I don't really care anymore though..

For now whatever gets me from A to B.
In 10+ years, hopefully something like a Audi A6, BMW M3 or maybe GTR R35 Egoist or Golf GTI. Depends on the circumstances though, like lifestyle etc. but I'd want something that looks classy, has power and a sweet as engine roar :P
Dream would be something like a Merc SLS AMG, Lambo Aventador, Ferrari 458, Aston Martin V12....... That's way too much cash to spend on a car though, well it is imo.

Not gonna move out anytime soon, hence why I need the car in the first place lol I'll be working, so the money will be going towards it.

I am not a full-on and passionate car person but I really do like them, and hopefully my first car can be at least semi-decent to drive.
I understand that some people think cars are nothing more than just a mode of transport, but they are worthy of being more than just that.
For me, it's just self-satisfaction. I would feel better to drive something that is a little classy (and manageable) as an oppose to a car that has been poorly been taken care of and is on the verge of breaking apart (i.e. engine failure and parts), and is also appalling to look at.
I guess society is similar in the sense that we don't all see the same things in the same way. Many will buy a particular, more expensive brand of clothing and others would simply think "why buy more expensive clothes when these ones from target can do the same thing?". In the end, both kinds of people will feel satisfied with what they have.
Also, even if having and maintaining a car was a hobby that was considered a waste of money, many could say that other hobbies are a waste of money as well, e.g. Warhammer, collectable action figures, etc. but they all bring a sense of self satisfaction and enjoyment.

I agree with Kanye East. If you're rich enough, you can afford a nice house, nice car and nice clothes. Some would argue that that's a waste of money and that you should get an average house, average car and average clothes, but what else are you going to spend your money on? As long as it makes you happy and satisfied, then I say you should buy the car of your dreams (within reason, of course).

Price?

These would all be used.

Holden Astra
Suzuki Alto
Ford Focus
Ford Fiesta
Mazda 3
Mazda 2
Hyundai i30
Mk5 Golf (Non DSG, so Manual)

If you can stretch your budget, seriously consider a VW Polo, like I did :) They look fantastic, are very reliable as I've heard, german quality (yes they're built off shore but tolerances are great). If you can learn manual, even better.

personally I don't think money can get better.

New ones are high teens to 22ish for the higher end models.

How would a Golf be superior to a Civic in your opinion?
Title: Re: Your First Car! :P
Post by: Greatness on February 03, 2013, 11:15:28 pm
Golfs are just ultra sexy. They're a little rocket too, I love the design of them.
Title: Re: Your First Car! :P
Post by: Mr Keshy on February 03, 2013, 11:25:12 pm
I've sat in a golf, and I feel that the fit and finish in the golf is far superior to the Honda. Also, I've driven a Tiguan (SUV) with the same engine as the golf and it was phenomenal. Because the engine is supercharge and turbo charged, there's always boost available to use! Really nice.

Problem is, that engine is very complicated and so it's been prone to heaps of failure. Also the reason they're dropping it for the new mk7.

Also, the DSG gearbox has had heaps of issues, also why I recommend going manual.

As an A to B car, you cannot fault the civic. No way.

If you care a little about refinement and stuff like that, definitely pay the premium for a polo/golf :)

Thanks for the responses guys, really appreciate the help :)

I've been trawling through carsales (even though I'm ages away from getting my 120 hours and money for a car - which I'll have to buy independently :-/ ), and I saw this: http://www.carsales.com.au/dealer/details/honda-civic-2009-14197202?base=1216&vertical=Car&cr=2&eapi=2&__N=1246%201252%201247%201282%204294965322%204294965250%20903%201216&num=15&silo=Stock&Range=Price%3aMin%2c20000~0.5&sort=default

What do you guys think? I've driven primarily in a Toyota Corolla hatchback so far, but a sedan wouldn't too much of a jump, especially a Civic, right?

You prefer the civics to the golfs and polos? :)

They're pretty awesome, with most of these jap cars, there's always stuff you can modify, which I personally love :)

Sedans just have a larger rear overhang, won't be too hard to get used to. Parallel parking might take some time to get used to perhaps :)

haha! If only that particular Civic would still be available by the time I get my licence... for me, the car would simply be an effective means of mobility, as I can't stand public transport  :D

I'm just worried about the prices associated with buying Japanese parts for these cars if the need arises - according to my dad it can be quite an expense

Are they expensive to service?
Title: Re: Your First Car! :P
Post by: Mr Keshy on February 04, 2013, 06:21:16 am
Civic's would be very cheap to service, mainly because of the wide availability of parts. Plus, these would more than likely be out of warranty so it can be done either by yourself or another cheap mechanic.

Mao probably speaks from experience (Y) Best to listen to him haha. Camry's Commodores and Falcons are really cheap to service though, again, because of the wide availability of parts and also, the cars are made here so parts are more accessible.

Oh, Camry's do come in smaller engines I think, so you might save fuel/money there.

Generally speaking, I believe, Honda and Mazda were the expensive ones to service. But I doubt much can go wrong with a civic :P

Have you looked at corolla's? They're reliable as well, as an A to B car, I guess that may suffice.

Post by: Mao on February 04, 2013, 09:58:05 am
Doesn't matter what car it is, expect to pay ~$3k per year maintaining the vehicle (rego + insurance + services). Keep in mind that servicing is more than just servicing the engine, you need to keep an eye out for tyres, breaks, transmission, lights, steering & breaking fluids. Generally, these things get replaced around the 5-7 year mark. If you buy a car less than 5 years old, be prepared to shell out when these things need replacing. If you buy a car more than 5 years old, be prepared to shell out if the previous owner was lazy.

I recommend Holden simply because they are easier to service. Internal parts are more accessible due to the fact that it's a bigger car and there's more room under the bonnet. If something goes wrong, the mechanic is not going to charge you $400 to disassemble and reassemble the front of the car.

If you live at home and daddy bought the car, you'll probably have to fork out for insurance.

If you live by yourself and bought the car for $2k and you're strapped for cash, you'll probably just have third party.

It depends on your financial situation.

I'm seriously considering getting a Skyline instead of an SV6. They have an awesome exterior, especially the back half of them, comfortable seats, they're manual cars and they only cost around 15k for a good model, such as this:
http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/nissan-skyline-1999-14312674?base=&vertical=Car&cr=48&page=5&eapi=2&__N=1216%20903%204294963846%204294963593%201247%201282%201252%201246%201912&num=15&silo=Stock&sort=~Price

If I'm going to get a Holden Commodore SS once I get my full licence, then I might as well live a little before then by getting a sick car like this. It just wouldn't feel right to replace an SV6 with an SS, especially since they're both autos.

I want a Japanese small car, that's why I've had my eye on either a Mazda 3 or Toyota Corolla to cut fuel costs without being too small and weak. I've particularly like the Mazda 3 SP23, with a 2006 model going for around $13k with optional leather and BOSE audio. This model isn't particularly fuel-efficient, however it is zippy especially with a manual transmission. Here's the link on carsales. http://www.carsales.com.au/private/details/mazda-3-2006-14260332?base=1216&vertical=Car&cr=395&page=33&eapi=2&__N=1246%201252%201247%201282%201216&num=15&silo=Stock&items=%5bMake%3aMAZDA%2cModel%3a3%2cSeries%3aBK%20Series%202%5d&sort=%7eOdometer
