Hey AspiringDoc,

For the numeracy component of the exam you can try and finish the core of the Year 9 textbook, and try and find yourself a copy of the exam booklet, there are 10 practise tests in there and we had to do them at school :P. For English I suppose just try and practise writing essays in persuasive, informative and creative form? To do well in spelling, grammar and punctuation read as much as possible, and try different types of books like novels, biographies and non-fiction literature.

NAPLAN is one of those tests that you can't really prepare for, and it's designed that way IMO. Out of curiosity why do you want to do so well in it?

Hiya,

I agree with Hannibal that NAPLAN is something that you cannot really prepare for. Honestly you would be wasting time (and money if you get a tutor) if you study for NAPLAN.

If you really want to try to get ahead, talk to your teachers on ways you can improve and if there's anything extra you can do.

Also, IMHO NAPLAN is sort of a joke, it doesn't help with much and doesn't help students that much.

Another comment: Don't try to pretend that this is your VCE. NAPLAN doesn't equal VCE or vice versa. Seriously, don't stress out on your NAPLAN results, they have pretty much no correlations on your capability and whether or not you will do well in VCE.

I agree with Clockwork. After finishing all my NAPLAN tests, I've realised that it's not as important as I thought it was. I mean, of course it's important, and something you should want to do well in, but it comes nowhere as close to VCE.
TBH, just don't stress out about NAPLAN. It is not the most important test in your life and it certainly won't give you any closure on whether you're prepared for VCE or not! But of course you should still try and do well.
And don't get a tutor - if you were studying for VCE a tutor would be fine, but don't get one just for NAPLAN, it's simply not worth the time, money and effort. ;)

I really dont think its worth studying for NAPLAN, I never have. As someone stated before, practice papers and practice books are a waste of both time and money.

Sorry to crush your aspirations, but the NAPLAN bands only go to 10 -- you can't get 11+ in year 9. (Mostly due to Federal-State relations yay politics)

Have a look on http://www.nap.edu.au/results-and-reports/how-to-interpret/how-to-interpret.html and read this part:

Quote
NAPLAN results are measured at a student level against an assessment scale in each of the areas tested. The scales span all the year levels from Year 3 to Year 9, and are divided into 10 bands. Not all bands are reported for each year level.

oh, right. sorry plonks. But your still  a downer.

How was he being a "downer"? What he said was that it's not possible to get any higher than band 10, and you said you got band 9 and 10s in year 7, which means you're getting some of the highest NAPLAN results possible...

Hi there,

I've not read any responses to the opening post, so apologies if this has been covered.

I think that it's great that you want to do well in VCE - I was similar when I was in Year 8, albeit not thinking about it too much. However, I am of the opinion that the best way to do as such is to enjoy the earlier years of high school, and to prepare well for tests/SACs/assignments without going overboard. There is very little point getting stressed or anxious about NAPLAN, in my opinion. As such, I don't think it's necessary to get a tutor (or even to try to prepare). Remember that, at the end of the day, NAPLAN (and school) is not the only thing that matters.

Work hard (but not too hard), and best of luck for your tests.  :)

ok so, how to study for naplan?

As everyone has said before, there's no way (or need) to "study" for NAPLAN. Just challenge yourself academically and as a person and don't even think about NAPLAN. Ask your teachers for ways to improve and challenge yourself, that would help greatly and show that you have initiative.

I am, as my name suggests, passionate about becoming a doctor, so i suppose i'm kinda pretending this is my VCE and seeing if i'm capable.

Mate, NAPLAN is NOTHING like VCE. And its pretty obvious because usually the first question is " How many apples are shown above?". If you treat NAPLAN like VCE, then you'd probably get good naplan results but fail VCE.

Go back in time and start reading Dickens from 5yoa.

Honestly, for all your English stuff, just read a bit of fiction daily.

For the math stuff, as already suggested, just... Do math. Lol.

Don't.

Don't.
Amen!
Naplan is not meant to be studied for. Do it without study and see where you fit in with the rest of your year. That will be more valuable knowledge. You'll just give yourself false hope if you study and get amazing results, when those also doing the tests didn't prepare at all.
